I’m tired of putting the kant in “kannst du Deutsch sprechen?” when it’s like...ja, ich kann?? My German has been INCHING along over the years - maybe one of these days it’ll all click and I’ll come out speaking like a Club Maté sippin’ Berlin hipster who doesn’t want to be a called a hipster (!) or o0o0o0o, even better - one of those intimidating bouncers at Berghain who BARELY speak at all but when they do, you pay attention!? Jaaaa!!!

  • Get the Rosetta Stone deal here ➡️ rosettastone.com/damondominiqueyt *BTW* My entire language learning journey started when I was 15 (back when I was learning Spanish) and Rosetta Stone had a website called SharedTalk where you could chat with people in chatrooms who spoke the language you were learning. I was in there every day after high school speaking to people from around the world. Now like 10+ years later, TALK ABOUT COMING FULL CIRCLE! They reached out for a minute integration, but I was like...nahhh I'll do the entire video! I've always wanted to try the real Rosetta Stone.

    • They should pay you tripple after this video. Or at least realize they found their perfect brand ambassador in you who can make it look fun and easy. Funny thing I noticed is that your accent sounds more french than american when you speak german, especially the "isch 'abe" (ich habe). Great progess though. You are already fully comprehensible in what you want to say. The hardest part in German is at the end of the learning curve: getting real close to native speaker level without all the devilish details in word order and case inflections outing you as a learner is very, very hard. Good thing is: none of us super cool Germans will expect that from you ;)

      @memento81@memento813 жыл бұрын
    • What would probably help you most is hanging out with native German speakers and practice with them. After all, it seems to have worked wonders in your learning French. :) Here are a few general pointers: The sharpness of the letters "S" and "Z" in German is switched compared to English. "S" is a soft sound (Sommer -> ZOMMER) and "Z" a sharp sound (Zahn -> TSAHN). Furthermore, German words starting with "Sp-" or "St-" are always pronounced "Shp-" (Spiel -> SHPEEL) and "Sht-" (Stadt -> SHTADT). The German pronunciation of the often confused "ie" and "ei" is always like the second letter as a standalone in English (ie -> EE, ei -> AYE). And finally, if there is an auxiliary verb (Hilfsverb) or when you have a subordinate clause (Nebensatz), the main verb always moves to the end of the sentence or clause. Hope that helps a bit. Du schaffst das! :)

    • and english is basically just an orgy of french, latin and mostly german, especially ae. if u have some basic language skill and know only one of the two, u still understand simple sentences because its so similar :)

  • It was fun hearing you talk about the double words because I was just learning about that at Uni. Back in the Medieval ages, French words were used for more high class speech and the Germanic based words were used for more common speech. So that's why reside is considered formal, whereas to live is informal because reside comes from the Old French " résider" and live comes from the Old English "libban" which is similar to "Leben" in German.

  • As someone who's always been obsessed with learning languages (ie trilingualish, took Latin and Ancient Greek and knows random words in several languages), German's been on top of the to-learn list for a long time. I love the language so much even though it gets a totally false rep of sounding rough and unpleasant.
