  • Alex - one tip is instead of using the sandpaper and just your fingers try using the same paper wrapped around a cheap thin Ocelo kitchen sponge. The sponge will help carry the lubricating water while evening out the pressure while you sand so your “wet sanded” area is more even. I actually use a Scotchbrite Dobie pad which is similar but I keep in my detailing cabinet.

  • As someone who owned 2(specifically the 540i) of these, having an E39 and smelling coolant is like milk and cereal. They go together. The best way to do it is to just replace the whole system at once because when you replace one piece it just finds the next weak spot. I understand that would probably be a bit much in terms of this project. The cooling system on this car runs at high temperature and high pressure and all of it is made of plastic. It practically cooks itself over time. They used to sell, and probably still do, upgraded aluminum radiators/expansion tanks to make it bulletproof but this is just not cost effect for most people. Beautiful work on bringing this one back to life, by the way.

    • On my m62tub44 I retrofitted a conventional 80 degree thermostat. It now runs at about 90 to 95 when I push it a bit. Before it was usually at 115.

    • BMWs and coolant leaks go together like Subarus and head gaskets. I think I had my BMW for three days before the whole cooling system let go. First and last BMW I will ever own...

      @nicholasvinen@nicholasvinen Жыл бұрын
    • For sure. I have an E38 740i and asked around on forums regarding immediate preventative maintenance I should be doing after the purchase. Plenty of replies said "replace the entire cooling system". I didn't. I replaced a few gaskets, one hose, and fixed the valley pan leaking. I regret not doing the entire system. Yes, it's expensive and seems like total overkill, but these things seriously kinda suck. I've had three major failures and I haven't owned it for more than a couple of years. All the rumors you hear about BMW's (and Audi's) are true. They suck. They're also amazing. If you haven't driven one but like to make fun of people who own them, don't ever try one. You'll end up loving it and find yourself stuck in what's pretty much an abusive relationship.

      @StoneMcKnuckle@StoneMcKnuckle Жыл бұрын
    • I must be really lucky. 200k miles on my E39 and I've never done a cooling system overhaul. Thermostat was stuck open so I replaced that, been good to go ever since.

      @busterscrugs@busterscrugs Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, they drive well but so do some other cars that aren't as much of a headache IMO. I wouldn't tell someone to never buy one but do your homework, and if possible, get one with a warranty.

  • The sad thing is, if someone like you didn’t step in, this car would have likely ended up parted out or sent to a yard. You’ve done it justice, and really extended its life. I think this series will also inspire a lot of people to either get into the flip game or at the very least take a shot at an older BMW. Great video as always, excited to see how it does at auction!

  • Congrats! This was Yeoman’s work. Bringing an e39 back from the brink is not cheap and not for the faint of heart. I’ve owned mine for 18 years (528i sport) and they are money pits. Very rewarding driving experience and reliable dailies but the paint quality from factory was not great, the cooling system requires diligent maintenance, and the rest of the stuff you interact with daily is impacted by bean counters. This car deserved to be saved. You showed how much work it takes to save and keep one (even DIY level). This is why your channel is the best as far as I’m concerned. I’ll watch the auction but won’t be bidding. Kudos!

  • Hey from Germany, I actually own a 1997 540i manual myself and I enjoyed this video just that much more because of it. I did a lot on that car myself too, the difference being that I paid 6.000€ for it and now that I’m done with it it should lay around 12-14k. Cars in general are really expensive here in Germany because of all the regulations and things like TÜV and stuff so I always find it very interesting how the prices differ overseas. Also I love that urs is a manual too because you barely ever see one of these as a manual, there where so few made….

Makes me want to go renew the finish on my 95 Avalon and do some interior renovation. Thanks Alex, keep them coming. I would like to buy one of your flips, but as an owner of many BMW's I know I cannot afford to keep them running as they age. The last really great BMW I owned was an old body style 535, with the close the hood by pushing back on the hood emblem. Should have never sold that car, the Euro 500SL that replaced it was a real money pitt, so now I drive dull old "last forever" Toyota.

  • I like to put spray cans in hot water to lessen paint spatter, you can also get custom paint can tops to get different spray patterns. I start at 110F, but you can alter it depending how much is still in the can.

  • I've used Touch-Up Direct before and it's great. Even better now that they have the fan sprayer attachment. Much smoother! Oh, and I used your link to buy the 4th of July Avalon King deal. Can't wait to shine up my G37!!

  • Love this video. I always like to wear an approved respirator when I’m dealing with automotive paint, and they’re not that much. Well worth the tiny added expense.

  • Love the series!! I know you have to stop at some point, but the steering wheel really devalues the work you put in the car, also a new set of colour matched floor matts would make a lot off eye appeal. Really love the hard work you put in it

  • Sweeet finale! I did the same with an '03 530i in Titanium Grey that had one owner, stack of papers, etc etc. Wasn't running when I bought it for $1k, threw in an alternator and boom, she runs!

  • Seems like you bought a different shade of oxford green on the rear bumper. The old shade was used on pre-facelift E39’s. It has a slightly blueish hue in light whereas the oxford green on facelift cars is deeper green. Both colors are lovely, especially with tan/beige leather.

  • Great content , rear bumper would have looked better without the large mis matched spot repair, key scratch treatment would have looked better. Excellent execution of rattle can painting though

  • That's what it's all about, it doesn't have to be perfect but it goes such a long way, It's a milion times better. It's almost more satisfying than doing it properly and expensively knowing you did this simply and on a budget
