DIY Built-In Bunk Beds - Twin over Full

2020 ж. 10 Мам.

Twin size bed on top, full size bed on bottom. Stairs and railing made of northern soft maple. Bed frames made of 2x4s, casing is 1/2” cabinet grade plywood, front faces are 3/4” plywood. I am a hobbyist, not a pro.

  • Great job! Which material did you put on top of the wood framing? MDF? Plywood? I am currently building a bunk bed and was going to drywall over but what you covered with look much better and easier.

    @kartiksundar5531@kartiksundar5531 Жыл бұрын
    • I used plywood but MDF would have worked great as well. The plywood gives the structure stability (and durability). I worry that drywall wouldn’t be strong enough.

    @ljb0655@ljb06552 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks! I believe we bought it from Home Depot online. Not sure if it’s still there. If you Google “wall sconce with switch,” you’ll find some options. I wound up switching it to a closed type, because one of my sons started taking out the bulb and I didn’t want them to get electrocuted.

I measured the height of the ceiling and the thickness of the mattresses and did the math to ensure both beds would have the same amount of space above the mattress. I measured the length and width of the mattresses and added a few inches to the openings so that they wouldn't fit too tightly and it would be easy to change the sheets. I guessed on the width of the stairs, which are 19" wide, and they are comfortable for kids or adults to climb without feeling too tight. The shelves are about 17" wide.

      @wizard_of_eyes@wizard_of_eyes2 жыл бұрын

    @gamer_fan308@gamer_fan3083 жыл бұрын
    • I initially planned to do exactly that, but decided not to. With a box spring under the full size mattress, there is actually only 3 inches between the box spring and the floor. I could have added drawers in the place where the box spring is, but construction of the drawers would have added a lot of time to the project. I also considered adding drawers under each one of the stairs, but decided to make it a “hideout” for the kids. (See picture at the very end of the video). They love playing in there. I figured I could go back and add drawers in those places in the future, but we didn’t really need the storage and I wanted to finish the project quickly. It only took 2 weeks to do during quarantine.
