What Makes a Power Puncher? - 5 Factors That Makes a Knockout Artist
Everyone loves a knockout artist, either in MMA or boxing; someone with the touch of death. There have been many through out history, Mike Tyson, Mark Hunt, Francis Ngannou, Deontay Wilder, Josh Emmett, the list goes on. But what makes a power puncher? In this video we go over five factors that can give someone this power and break them down using science and biomechanics.

Can you make a “What Makes a Strong Chin”. Please and thank you
Yes please I always wonder why some fighters seem nearly impossible to Knockout while some get knocked out by gust of wind
The bonne densety is the answer
Factor that make a strong chin are - the wider you head and chin are the better - how much liquid is in your skull - a thick skull - how short your chin and head in length -neck muscles how strong they are

Deontay Wilder: skinniest legs and hardest punch
Also his wrist are tiny as too
*He also has metal rods in his hands and long arms...*
very true. I think when it comes to wilder it's just god given power. He is a genetic freak in this regard.
He has really strong legs though. He can squat like 200kilos
Imagine if he trained his legs it will be absolutely frightening
So basically It’s about drive, it’s about power, we stay hungry, we devour Put in the work, put in the hours and take what’s ours
Gets me every time 🤣🤣
1)Timing 2)technique 3)fast twitch dominance 4)favorable tendon to muscle belly insertion points 5) wide shoulders/clavicles. The large wrist hand example is a common myth but rocky marciano had small hands and was a brutal ko puncher, mark hunt and david tua also both had small hands and both were insane ko punchers. Theres 2 types of punchers, 1) straight 2) rotational. Usually tall long fighters like klitschko, tommy hearns, deontay wilder are known for powerful straight right hands or cross/over hands due to their builds. Shorter stockier fighters and known for powerful rotational punches like hooks and uppercuts like mike tyson(left hook), joe frazier left hook, david tua left hook.
Nice info bro
Spot on 👌🏻
This is 100% correct.
Number four my bro, usually when i finish my punch I'm tensing my stomach to end the rotation, it's like counteracting the torque from the punch by tensing your stomach to bring you back to the initial position . I've been told my punches feel like getting hit by a car, not sure whether this explains my heavy hands i have. İ still think, the pop/tense at the end of a punch is never mentioned by anyone and is probably the biggest factor to mare staticish type of power punches.
@@jamescook4402 ya that would be classified under technique. Any physical action can be broken down into 2 categories things you do/learn and things youre born with. Given that everyone has perfect timing and technique punching power will still vary like crazy. Theres boxers who train for 20yrs and still dont have great punching power and thats what they do for a living. Theres genetic variability.

*Brock Lesnar had 5XL gloves.* I remember watching him punch Heath Herring into a back roll. The bloke had so much power, and he never trained striking specifically. If he started MMA earlier, and even if he had a good Muay Thai/Boxing coach he would’ve smashed anyone.

Some of the hardest punchers in boxing history don't have large hands. I think Julian Jackson who is considered by some to be the hardest hitter pfp in boxing history and he had average size hands. Also from what I've heard Miguel Cotto has small hands relative to other boxers. As far as converting jumping to power. Rampage Jackson one of the hardest punchers in the history of MMA couldn't jump to save his life. He even made fun of himself for it.
Well look at julians frame tho he obviously has a fast muscle twitch fiber it’s not just hands it’s just muscle fibers and energy explosions
Vitor Belfort also has notoriously small hands
Cope no one heard of them outside of autistic fanboys
Do you think it’s actually not a factor at all though? Or just in gloved striking sports. I have small hands but I’m a strong guy with a good pair if gloves I can hit with good power, but without I can’t bc my hands are small and my knuckle protrusion is very low. Can barely see my last 2
@@H_whit99 I think that there are similar mechanisms in the body that are active when performing those motions, but are not necessarily the source of punching power. You punch harder with gloves because your body intuitively tries to efficiently move the extra weight of the gloves. We naturally are born with the ability to throw. An early precursor to when we were Hunter gatherers and would hunt using spears and rocks. Your body feels the gloves and your brain thinks you’re going to throw something so your body shifts and then transfers the weight. Creating that powerful punch. Similar to throwing. You just need to train your mind to think you’re doing that without gloves. Try shadow boxing with wraps or even with paper in your hands. Something light. Your mind with think you’re trying to throw something. Do it for 3-5 minutes every day and you’ll see a difference
I'm 5'7" and I was able to dunk (I'm disabled now) and when I was boxing, I generated a lot of power even with a small frame. Although there were times the punch hurt me also😂 Wrestlers in MMA also generate KO power with their large legs. Great video

@Lxnkzi explosive muscle + strong arm bones and joints that transfer the power during impact
@@bonk4225 I never said small wristed ppl couldn't hit hard. I merely insinuated larger wristed ppl generally hit harder.. Like I said, many factors go into play
Yes bone density is a real thing
I feel like the ability for the joints to snap in place firmly during a punch makes a big difference too. Stronger joints means more power and I think thats another factor that could be put into play.
I think the power of punch starts from mind .It a signal that synchronize the different parts of body for a powerful Punch
Lol everything starts with the brain
@@johnirving2797 😂😂😂
Tryna sound so different🤓
Yup
It comes down to a lot of different variables. Fast twitch muscle, your ability to activate your muscle at the moment of impact, proper body rotation, ability to set traps so you can walk your opponent into your punch or throw your punch from an angle outside of their field of view. You also have to choose the proper type of punch for the situation. You can generate power by whipping your arms and landing at high speed or properly stacking your bones to generate a punch with high stability so you can really push through with the punch.
god this video is gold, i was trying to jump high yesterday, because i wanted to know why i was punching hard and i did some vertical, i went 39ish, with this video its a coincidence and informative at thesame time
Thats a good vertical! And glad you enjoyed 🙏
That "Mike Tyson's non-existing neck" got me.😁
I believe the hardest punchers are tall and thin who have more fast twitch muscle fibres who have perfect technique especially in the straight right with proper loading technique. Lots of leverage with a thin frame for naturally more speed and then having fast twitch muscle fibres for even more speed with excellent hip rotation.

The ass thing is real. I'm tall and skinny but I move furniture for a living despite having no ass. I can lift heavy shit all day but I have no explosive punching power. I have every leverage advantage as long as I can move slowly but every disadvantage if I have to deliver power quickly
Yeah I don't know how much of this is true. I only have the last one you mentioned and I"m short small frame small bones 140lbs but I've ko'd 2 guys at 185lbs. With 1 punch. So I'd say technique, placement and timing if you don't have the other stuff.
Power is all about commitment. That is why punchers are born, not made.
I had a 24 vertical jump!! And can get 26 if I try hard enough as well
As someone who knows nothing about this the more I study what makes a big puncher the more I think training to have massive forearms might be some help.
I think punching power is bone structure and genetic in muscles
Cheetah and horse etc have small wrists and big thighs to create higher velocity. Small wrists can help punch faster
There's an interesting case involving another boxer, Frank Bruno, whose punching power was measured under laboratory conditions by a team of scientists representing the British Medical Association at Loughborough University. According to the study, Bruno's punch registered at 0.6 tonnes of force, which is equivalent to 53 times the force of gravity. To provide context, it's worth noting that fighter pilots typically experience blackouts at six times the force of gravity. The testing wasn't aimed at setting a world record but rather to scientifically examine the potential damage a heavyweight boxer could inflict on the human skull. This information isn't based on speculation; official records of these tests are available .
Regarding wrist size and power, is there a reference for this point?
No big wrist size dont mean somebody be punch harder but biger wrist mean he can take more multiple repeat maxload on hees hand while striking with max power and need less recovery than somebody with thiner wrist unless this dude with thiner wrist have activate special gene which make your bones superstrong cant wememeber how this gene was call n9 something or something like this no its LRP5 ., power in punch come from not your wrist size howeer this is factor too because each weight which consist on whole kinetick chain matter but its not that only wrist punching effectie impact weight from body can be 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 even 10 kg depend how stiff somebody hae kinetick chain upon conatct with target other factor which matter are range of motion acceleration technique/arm setup upon contact timing fist size too but its really relatively small factor but ok it is its true that when the same enrgy and momentum colide but on diffrent surface area peak force are diffrent =biger distact energy and momentum faster= biger peak force only be watching somebodys wrist and een hand /fist ssize dude who know how it goes like i know that he know literally nothing at this point without all rest factor about which im write about weight yea body weight is important but true factor is % effective impact weight which somebody put into shot its not whole body weight if lighter dude hae stronger kinetick chain /stiffer when conect he despite less body weight he be able to put in reall more % from hees lighter body into shot than some heavier dude :x so when it come to force from punch alot factor play role and you know literally horse sh.t when you know only wrist size :x .
human body when punch dont behave like dead object like bullet or baseball ball ,when you tell me that baseball ball weight around 150 gram havve let say 30 m/s now we know eerything assuming target is the same always when you say to me some dude weight 120 kg and have 9 inch wrist i know nothing literally :x because in human case so much more factor consist on output value simple .somebody who try to tell you that he know how somebody hard be punch be hees body weight and wrist size know nothing literraly :x .
its like with this grpah about knowledge about some potentially simple issue so it start be are you kidding me ? its obiosu simple offcorse i know how it goes :X next step is hmmmm dude its lil more complicated than i though :x next step is hmm hollly sh.t i know literally nothing about this :x from this point when he start learn how it goes next step is hm ok its start to make sense but im still dont understend everything or dont know each factor which cocnisit on output value :x and last step is oh so it goes liek this ok now im know how it goes :x and now is last last step i told you i know what"s going on :x ,.dont be ridiculous :x
Maybe I can agree with wrist size but I've been in the ring with super atletic dudes and some not so . And punching power is random .
Every time I want to test my punching power my wife hides herself in our room
Question on the ass; does the volume matter more than the strength/power per inch it generates?
So are you saying Julian Jackson, Alexis Arguello and Tito Trinidad are outliers because they have small wrists. It actually has to do with bone density.
I'm 5'4 145. Large size gloves for hands, wrist measurements are 7.25 inches. My average vertical is 35 inches high. No wonder nobody liked fighting me lol.
I have small hands 😭😭😭

@@brooklyn3562it's 50 50 I think People who have naturally hard punches must have alot fast twitch muscle fibres but again even if they don't use proper technique they won't be able to deliver a devastating blow like a trained fighter with average genetics would Also there are guys who don't really have broad shoulders, big hands and wrist or jacked up but still produce alot of power U should look at they way those hardest hitters techniques and the way they throw the punch they have the technique and know how to throw a punch it's not like it's all genetics or God gifted

The more interesting punchers are those who throw punches that do not look powerful. Wilder, The Klitschkos, you can see that their knockout punches are obviously knockout punches - they are snappy and explosive. But the punches of boxers like George Foreman or Beterbiev do not look powerful - they look slow - but you know they are powerful because their opponent is wincing in pain.

Power comes from legs and back. Not from the arms. Snapping the shoulder when you punch and driving your legs at the same time.
In attempt to powerpunch the subscribe button I destroyed my monitor. Thank you ...
Punching power depends on physique: • example 1: long arms, legs and tiny waist with narrow shoulders to turn the body into the punch with leverage (Francis, Wilder, etc). • example 2: shorter arms, wide hips, throwing hooks and uppercuts (e.g. Mike Tyson, Hunt, etc).
*Brock Lesnar had 5xl gloves btw.* He had insane power, but never learned how to use it in striking, only wrestling. Yes, muscle fibres, and muscle insertion points also matter a lot. So does bone density too. Speed and explosiveness do too. Which can be built up with bands and kettlebells.
Wide shoulders are very helpful for punching power.

What makes a KO artist is first and foremost, natural punching power... That can't be taught. Second is the killer instinct to finish guys once they're hurt, which punches to throw and when to throw them. It's another thing that can't really be taught entirely. It's more like an ability to read the situation... There's little things u can notice that u have to catch in a split second and act on them right away. Sounds obvious, but it's not. It's like a "gut feeling" in a lot cases. Have to know when to just go all out or you'll get caught with a counter punch leaving yourself open doing that. Watch how wide open Mike Tyson would leave himself once he started trying to finish guys... But he wasn't worried about getting hit because he knew they were already rocked.
"And a Non-existent Neck"! .. Mike Tyson👁👄👁
bro how do hips generate power ?
Rotation generates kenetic energy which is power
Im 12 and my hands knuckles are big
I’m 180cm and have really short arms. (172cm reach) I guess my punching power is non existent.
not necessery remember that range of motion can be compensate be better acceleration ... how is in your egzample no idea but estimating punching power somebodys only be lenght of arm is not good idea 2 metres range of motion at 10 G force acceleeration give egzacly the same output energy and momentum as let say 1 metres range of motion at 20 G force acceleration ....
Rocky Marciano had also very short reach bro. Just keep punching ;)
Having short arm can be an advantage in clinch. You can sneak powerful uppercuts and short hooks
You can probably compensate big working your forearms and grip strength, building the muscles on your entire hand and forearms. This will not only increase the mass of your fists but also make your fists tighter and wrist stronger which makes them “harder” which means more of the power of your punch transfers to your target.

Big hands increase power yes yur right bout that . But yes wrists size don’t matter honestly UNLESS your a. HEAVYWEIGHT fighter . Muscle building is genetic, does that mean we shouldn’t go to the gym and lift? We are all born with a potential/ceiling, some are obviously different than others. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work to fulfill our potential.
If you train it at a young age 15-18 or so it has to improve no?

Lol ok then why do I have I know several people and family members that have wrists the size of peoples forearms hands the size of peoples hamstrings could jump over horses and never knock someone out in their entire life!???????
This is half-baked at best. Look at boxers such as Mark Breland, Thomas Hearns, Julian Jackson, Gerald McCLellan.
You should do a “what makes a matrix /ultra instinct fighter?”
Once had a full 2ft long porcelain statue hit me across the jaw and I felt nothing and i have larger wrists and hands which are genetic running from father to son and through the years I have practiced punches on brick walls without damage of any kind.i might not be an athlete but I'm a survivor and won't give up the fight until my last breath.
Wrist correlation to punching power is such a lie. Look at wilder wrists
