You sure need a retractable roof in the north of England
Personally I'd go for Option C. Repurpose the current stadium for the Academy and Women and build a new stadium next to it. Option A + B would probably be the best of both worlds in terms of redevelopment and expansion, but this creates a logical problem which nobody seems to have mentioned- how feasible would it be to carry on playing at the current OT while redevelopment is done and if not where would we play in the mean time?
Also to monetise the stadium during the off-season for concerts etc a retractable roof is needed like Real Madrid have done with theirs @@robertblake1228
I’ve been a civil engineer for 15+ years. It doesn’t matter that those technologies exist to enable the building of the stand above the rail, the issue is with the daylight for the housing behind. I can promise there is no real solution that enables both parties to be fully happy. The only option for Man Utd to fulfil all its ‘wanted’ stadium ideals and criteria is with a new stadium. Don’t forget refurbing old Trafford just means that in 20/30 years you are asking the exact same questions of the design, if you build a brand new platform and infrastructure, new ground with fold away pitch etc you have an infinitely more upgradable stadium in 30 years time. Modern Stadium requirements have simply outgrown current stadium location, it is not suitable any more.
Absolutely. The current housing has a right to its daylight, regardless of the direction of shadow.
Wouldn't you think MUFC would have purchased the houses or done a deal to build them new houses in the proposed 5K housing development on trafford Park?
Thanks Scott for the clarification. The layman would of course want option A but it’s great to know that the issue is not the railway. Good to hear these issues so that we can not go in circles about options when they don’t exist in the first place
I have been lead to believe Manchester United own all the houses already
New stadiums are soulless. Old Trafford regeneration will basically be a completely new stadium that retains some of it. Of course it matters that those technologies exist. United can’t afford a 2BN stadium which is why they are trying to scav money from the tax payer
Option C, its not just the stands, internally the whole stadium needs modernising, so might as well start from scratch
l would feel sorry for those living in the houses nearby. Their obstructions is huge.
Option D, but with a similar design to OT. Having both stadiums having an element of symmetry, would be incredible. For me it would keep the history embedded in the area. I'd deffo keep elements of OT in any new design. Less of the bedpans 😂
You need a fully retractable roof in the north of England or its a joke
Option A full stop. Old Trafford is way too iconic to be looking so much like Spers stadium
No, build the new stadium.. Option D
Build new stadium. Break old Trafford if possible
Let me say concept A is the coolest one
As much as I love old Trafford I would like to see a brand new stadium ultra modern 100000 plus. But as you said Sam the steel works on the roof is iconic so would love to see that incorporated into the new stadium for sure
theres too many implications with the current stadium , rail line and the houses behind it, best to build a brand new stadium
@@ravd8082 We need a stadium with a retractable roof like Barca and Madrid. Its north England ! and no Spurs got an average new stadium. Are we Spurs?
You managed to talk nonsense twice in such a short paragraph a) Barca new stadium will not have a retractable roof and EVERYONE who has been to Spurs new stadium has not called it average, so you obviously have not. In fact the company that designed it advising Man Utd
@@robertblake1228Barca and Madrid are staying in their current stadiums 😂😂 just refurbing them. Rain helps United due to players being used to it so why would we try and stop it? Stop spouting southern nonsense
Last one option D looks the best to bring all level of teams together
D for me. Just expanding the south stand and fixing the roof doesnt address the legroom etc in the other stands. Capacity wise, they need to look at the season ticket waiting list and add 20% to that.
From what Sir Jim has already said he wants to build an entire new stadium that makes it among the best & biggest in the UK & I think further down the line it'll be far more profitable in terms of match day revenue & with entertainment complexes built in so that families can have a good day out aswell as watch football. Also our stadium could then host many events which will bring in revenue aswell. Old Trafford has been neglected for many many years it'll need alot more work than many think. Also building a new stadium plus having hotels on the grounds & all that tackle will help with the local area creates job oppertunities etc. Time will tell
You're a natural on camera, keep shining!
If the south stand was built to mirror the same capacity as the north stand (including the quadrants), we’d get a capacity increase of 18-19,000
lol imagine living in those houses with that stadium towering over and turning your back yard into giant cave. They have to build a new stadium, it's the only viable long term option with the least amount of impact on football operations!
For a refurbish I'd pick A. But I'd like either a significant refurbish or a rebuild. I don't like the bedpan look either. But what if it looked like Allianz Arena - might be able to keep some of the white steel options and light it up red. Love the acoustics in that stadium - would love for the new Old Trafford to be that loud.
If Option A is feasible with the platform over the railway line, then 100% that's the option to choose. It'll be cheaper to build an extension over one stand than a full stadium. Also If the south stand mirrors the north stand + quadrants that will easily add 15,000 capacity, which means OT will hit the magic 90,000 capacity, whilst keeping with the heritage and character of the current stadium. It ticks all the boxes.
I think Man Utd need a new stadium.....which can be built to closely resemble OT. Large steep tiers, very close to the pitch. OT has several issues for a supposedly world class stadium 1. Very cramped seating-the legroom is TINY and seats narrow. Now you can just install wider plush seats but the depth of the rows is impossible to alter...And the legroom is a bigger issue than the seat width..This is a biggie. 2. The slopping roof. Looks great from the helicopter but not so great from the stands...It makes the ground very dark and even claustrophobic, esp if youre standing in the north stand uppermost tier... 3. The lack of huge concourses/restaurants, toilets, elevators etc. At least compared to modern grounds OT is lacking big time in those areas 4. The lack of corporate seating-luxury suites and outdooor business/club style seating....Man Utd could sell at least twice as many as it currently does.. 5. The quadrants on the inside look MESSY ....you know what i mean. 6. The exterior- good dont get me wrong but nowadays stadiums of world class clubs tend to look like spaceships-see Allianz, new Bernabeu...
Like option A. Should be able to double stand size at least, push 85/90 tho. 92 thousand be fitting. Maybe a few other touch ups on exterior, raise roof, sort fan services to enjoy the experience more
New stadium
If you want to reclaim the title of biggest football club in the world, you need to build something bigger and better than both the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu. It also needs to look wild. Forget keeping or copying the roof on the current stadium. You either build bigger, better and new or you don't bother. Of these options B is the best because it looks space age but I think the architects should be let off the leash and build something completely crazy. Something that's never been seen before. I know some fans are worried about tradition but remember, today's cutting edge is tomorrow's tradition.
I’d imagine be more like 90 with south stand mirroring the north
If the roof is fixed, option 'A is great.
Option C could be the best with new style and advanced technology and equipment.
Option A - you can replace the roof with a new one. Option A looks nicer, keeps culture and is cheaper. You can use the other land for “regeneration” (make your money)
Option A is by far the best. It is imperative to keep the roots of Old Trafford.
IF JIM ACTUALLY BRINGS SOUTHGATE IM FUCKING DONE WITH THIS CLUB
Horrible choice by sjr. ETH to Southgate ridiculous!
it's just media rubbish. Southgate has always been a failure as a coach.
Option A - classic look. Fix the roof and update the amenities.
Option C but would prefer a totally new state-of-the-art stadium of about 95 to 100k capacity. OT can be redesigned and repurposed...
Could you add a 3rd tier to the Stretford end, and a 3rd tier, to the score board end as well.
Option C I’ve never been sentimental over bricks. Old Trafford has been rebuilt after WWII. It’s changed under the Martin Edwards/Gill redevelopments…. They’re essentially 100yo plus footings and infrastructure. If ur redeveloping the area then a New Stadium is a must. The design should incorporate the stylings, features and statues/memorial tunnel of the old. And when they reduce the old Trafford for use by the academy and women’s team I’d love It to look just like a mini OT of today… But a less sterile non bedpan 100k seater mega stadium is THE Statement of we’re back!
Loving the content, Sam. I think option D is the only one that Man Utd could take and not have to look for another ground to play their games at.
Need a new modern state of the art stadium
Has to be a new state of the art stadium.
Option E 100,000 capacity Retractable roof and pitch! Current stadium. Downsize to 20-25k Then build hotels, restaurants and flats around the current stadium.
Option A; North stand is 25.5k, south stand is currently 11.5k so assuming they are mirror images, that adds ca. 14k and would bring the stadium just shy of 90k.
What a Video Sam, thanks for that 👌👏🏻
Let me start by saying I’ve never been to OT. I’m an overseas Red since 97. I’ve planned many times but life and circumstances caused changes (birth of kid, job change, pandemic). If feasible I lean toward option A. The look of OT is iconic and every football fan knows the stadium just by seeing it. Modernize the interior. Upgrade facilities. Increase capacity and build up the South Stand over the railway with a platform that allows easy access. If a new stadium is chosen I think they should keep the look of the roof structure. The white steel is just part of OT. I hate the bed pan and bowl looks.
I remember Fergie mentioning this years ago exactly the same as that. Going beyond the rail track and having a station to drop off fans underneath, and I believe he said this would increase OT to 88k
Love Old Trafford. I first went there with my uncle in 1967, and was a regular visitor up to joining the RAF in 1976. I would be very sad to see it go, but I feel that clinging to the past is not the way forward, and a new ground is the best way forward I think. having said that, none of the above suggestions fill me with awe!
The only one possible is D. We as a club would lose too much game day revenue that it's not fesible unfortunately. As a 52 year old, I believe we need a completely new Stadium, rather than having to put even more cash into OT on maybe 10 yrs again only for other issues to pop up. We as fans deserve a New Stadium. Cheers Sam.
Option D, it's more financially reasonable for looking forward in the future. Modern stadium that can look as upgraded version of Old Trafford, not completely same but visual aspect of it would work.
1:59 according to the tour guide in old Trafford when I was there 25 years ago he said It’s not because of the railway it’s because of the sunlight. The grass needs sunlight and a roof would block the majority of sunlight. So they can’t build on that section the stand. The Aviva (Landsdown road ) Dublin has a train going through the main stand. The Amsterdam Arena has a duel carriage way going under the stadium The opposite side was developed for Euro 96 and without the corners gave an additional capacity of 12,000 supporters. Each corner would give an additional 2500. So the capacity would grow to be 91000 making it “the Wembley of the north”
At present The Old Trafford Stadium is still incomplete & needs is an upgrade of the SBC stand & East & West quadrant to be completed first before you can sort out the roof. This Stadium has a lot of potential & can be one of the best stadium in Europe if not the world with the original design cos it has authentic & character with the potential capacity of at least 90K, all it needs is an refurbished & some TLC. Take Note: The Stadium Expansion Must Not Exceed the rail way track! Man Utd 's Old Trafford 'The Super Bowl of Stadiums known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' is unique & a Colossal of a stadium.
The white steel cantilevers on old Traffords roof were supposed to resemble the old cranes that were once on the docks there.
A Manchester United fan since I was 10, really hope they gonna build a new cool stadium that has some giant screen in the near future
Sam, the houses at the back will stop option C. ‘Right to Light’ for residents etc. A or D for me
There is no such law as right to light,
I personally think a massive regeneration of the whole area is what will happen and i think it will take several years to get to that point. new stadium, hotels coffee shops apartments and retail units.. Basically disney land with a football stadium instead of a rollercoaster. Somewhere for tourist to spend all weekend there and spend a small fortune. To become more commercially profitable you need attractions not just once a fortnight on matchday.
Ratcliffe talks big to get fans on his side but ii is the glaziers shout in the end
Them gardens at the back of the South stand saying goodbye to daylight for good.
I'll take option C. Looks amazing and your looking after Women's and youth teams by adopting land on original Old Trafford site.
if you extended the south stand replica to the north and SE and SW quadrants then you’ll achieve over 90,000 capacity. if you then add a 3rd tier on the west and east stand and the quadrants you could achieve close to 100,000.
option b will have isssues like the large building in london that reflects light etc option A,but more seats and new design keeing the old roof style
Sam just checked the figures on the stands The N Stand holds 26k, the S Stand holds 10k. That's an increase of 16 k alone mate. The 2 quadrants also added an extra 8k when they were rebuilt. Mate that's an extra 24k seats making the stadium 98k, wow! There was also a plan to increase the N Stand to 34k by adding another stand in 2019 agreed with Trafford Council. That would take Old Trafford to a mammoth capacity of 106k. You won't be building a new stadium anywhere near that size, not chance.. Sort the Theatre of Dreams, which is already iconic & as we saw last Sunday still class, defo the best option. You know it's the answer mate❤❤❤
You need a retractable roof in England, thats a must have
@@robertblake1228 Haha nah mate. it rains every now & then, so what?
Stand capacities are: West = 14,263 East = 13,307 North = 21,404 South = 9,433 NE quad = 5,603 NW quad = 5,501 SE quad = 2,050 SW quad = 2,288 Total = 73,846 The rest of the 75k+ capacity is exec boxes and hospitality suites. There is no way we would copy north stand over to south. The north stand is an abomination. South would be done to match east and west. That would add about 7k plus the quads, say another 7k. But you aren't going to copy over the poor legroom. There will be more hospitality spaces. Increased media spaces. More disabled spaces. At best you're looking at adding about 10k, taking capacity to about 85k.
@@creepingbrain That's just not correct is it? You look anywhere & the new quadrants alone added an extra 8k? You haven't got a clue how they can expand the South Stand neither, your just trying to knock the Idea because you want a rebuild.. & as for the N Stand, I sat in it for 15yrs & it was more than fine? Not a restricted view in the stand & the capacity is 25.5k everywhere I look?
Capacity with developing the south stand would take it to between 87 and 90k. I dont the residents in those houses would want that wall of steel at the end of there back garden
Redoing the Main Stand to mirror the SAF standvwould take the capacity to 94k, however the seating wouldn't be to modern spacing, redoing the seating to modern specs would then reduce the capacity back down to around 82k x
I've been to OT on the train many times with station outside the South stand. Think it shut in the 80's
The extension on the North Stand gave 11,500 additional seats. Each quadrant added 4000 seats each, 8000 in total. Thats 19,500. If you replicate the same for the South Stand and quadrants you get a Capacity of 93,810. Todays official capacity is 74310. If you lifted the roof and add the same height as the South Stand all around the stadium you will end up with a capacity easily over 100 000. Potentially overgoing Barcelona's new stadium at 105 000 capacity.
Option D. Build a 60-70k seater stadium next to Old Trafford on the car park like in option C. Build the new stadium with downsizing and repurposing in mind. This stadium becomes Man United's home stadium for a few years then the current Old Trafford gets knocked down except for the old tunnel. And a brand new 100,000+ seater stadium is built on the same site with the pitch in the exact same location. And as you said with a white steel roof. Once it's built the other stadium gets downsized and repurposed for the academy and youths etc
Option A if it's doable. A new stadium is now my preferred choice. I've come to terms with that and if they are able to down size OT for the womens and U21s etc then i'm happy with that
I think they will build a new one next to the current ground. It will be about 85000 capacity to begin with and room to expand over the following summers while Old Trafford is taken down and the area rebuilt. That way, the cost is spread out and the team is in the ground earlier making the club money.
A refurbishment of Old Trafford would need all the seats ripping out and redoing for more leg room so Option C for me, to take us into the future.
What if old trafford was turned into a museum/mall/concert or auditorium?...the museum would serve as a memory to charlton, best,Fergie and all those amazing memories. I'm sure it would bring in a revenue year round
Only a new stadium makes sense. Expanding south stand to match east & west would only add a maximum of 10k seats. Adding those extra seats, whacking a new roof on, and a new facade, and tarting up the concourses would cost about £1b. There would be about 8 years of disruption where parts of the ground are shut down, or maybe the whole ground shut down. When finished increased revenues would cover financing with a bit to spare. A new state of the art 100k stadium would an extra 20k standard tickets plus 5k exec/premium. Cost £2b. Increased revenues would be 3 or 4 times any financing costs. The space where the old ground is, and around the new stadium (the "stadium district" part of the Trafford Wharfside project), could then be redeveloped into a fan park, bars, eating places, community stuff etc. A new mini stadium for the ladies & youth team can be built somewhere on the plot. None of this wider project can be done with the old stadium where it is. There's only one reason for just redeveloping the old stadium rather than a new stadium, and that's our emotional attachment to the place. The question is, is that emotional attachment to the old ground more important than all the advantages that a new stadium would bring to the club, the supporters, and the wider community? I'm glad I'm not making the decision.
D, with a different exterior design, that seats at least 90K
Sam, all of these options will lead to a significant ticket price hike. With a refurbishment, there's still going to be stuff that breaks because it's old. We need to rip the band aid off and build a new stadium and have the infrastructure around a new stadium to create more revenue to create more money to comply with FFP / more signings.
For A + B you would have problems with the planning permission for the stadium as there would be a lot of objections to it
I love the idea of keeping the pitch and building a new stadium around that, but extending the south stand and replacing the roof isn’t enough if we are to be best in class. We need to sort out that drop off the pitch has since it was raised for undersoil heating - it’s a death trap. Hospitality and executive boxes need to be better (only for generating the income we need to pay for the work). We need better/decent tv screens and the seating needs to be better spaced as it’s too cramped in some sections. I love Old Trafford and still think it looks great - went in December and it’s had a fresh lick of paint, seats are being upgraded and still better than 80% of the stadiums in the PL, but we need to think of the next 50-100 years and match the standard of the tier 1 stadiums elsewhere in the world.
I like the 1st one but I think a new stadium might be the way forward
Option c is amazing❤
I just can't see the refurbishment working with the houses and railway so close to existing site. It has to be option C (the new stadium) as they then have a blank canvas to work with.
Id like option A or something similar but brand new world class stadium as there is no space in parts of the ground miles away from the pitch
Maintain the buildings intergrity and the face of it. Option A for me. If you can refurbish the south stand then keep A
Option D, but not that design for the new and current OT. Got to be able to keep some history. Maybe build a hotel etc there.
Option D is the long-term solution and the future of United.
The issue is the seats, these need improving as it's so cramped. I would go for A if it also meant changing all of the seats.
I think if they were going to build a brand new stadium you would think they would actually have a roof. Marvel Stadium (in Australia, Melbourne) have a roof that opens and closes. I would love to see a big club in the Europe to do that. No more wet football matches 🙌🏼
I think they will ultimately go with a rebuild, OT has a lot of issues try to expand architecturally (rail line and houses) and they could feasibly build around the existing stadium to keep disruption of games to a minimum in the vacant land.
if you want too, the new stand could have 30.000 seats, but sponserboxes and stuff like that will proberly take up some of the space
Complete new stadium for me Its all about the next 100 years and beyond History is History looking forward to the new future is a must......
D for me plus it will be a 100 thousand seater plus shops restaurants cinema many thing. Plus easier transport home for home fans and away fans.
The problem with the steel you like on the roof is that you can’t then add a sliding roof
1 major problem with option b Where are we supposed to play when the renovations are taking place?
Interesting
I'm a little confused about the homes across the railway England is so far north that I would assume the sun is usually going to be more south. Those homes are on the south side so they should still get sun
From these options, I like the A option, just because I don’t like the design of B and A+B. As much as hate the idea of losing Old Trafford, which is bound to the history of this club, with the memories of every single moment of its history, I think SJR will more likely build a new stadium. That’s my feeling
Option D new build and with old Trafford being down sized and the museum stay there etc and youth and women’s teams being played there 👍
My heart says A+B but the time frame, reduction in revenue and lack of suitable ground to play in while the works done makes it unlikely
It's going to look fab
Retain SBC South as an historic connection. Listed status. Poss' retain pitch for a smaller stadium, so current OT would be partly retained. New OT 105k, best in world. Raised pedestrian walkway to Manc city centre to get 1,000's in/out. Call it the Red Walk.
First one is amazing. Keeps the character of the current stadium.
Just build a new one. Refurbishing will cost about the same as building a new one, and will keep some of the old issues. When benfica decided to build the new stadium there was the proposal of refurbishing the old one. At that time the refurbish and building a roof all around would cost more 50M€ than just start from scratch.
OPTION B OR C this design was done before real madrid's upgrade so video creation is head of the game this design is futuristic .. but move the building over away from the train :)
If it were to be a refurb, then it would definitely have to be option A out of those 3, I certainly don’t like the bed pan if it’s new or refurbished
Doing the south stand and increasing the capacity is the best short term solution, increase revenue and save money for modernisation later. Borrowing money with interest is going to cost more in the long-term.
New Stadium for me with all the benefits people talk about. New sound and architectural technology would make greater atmosphere until fanbase over some years makes the new stadium more soul full more "homely"
Those 3D animations and designs are pretty cool to see. I say, keep Old Trafford and build a new stadium next to it but with a design that's closer to OT and not these bed pan ones.
Option D. We all know that Sir Jim Ratcliffe very much prefers a brand new 90-100k capacity State of the Art stadium. & that will be the Best in Class in UK 😃😃
A because sorry the other looks like a massive bed pan , the older video you did had some quality looking stadiums
Option D is most suitable for me but well lets wait and see
A+b for me the roof needs to be raised so when you are in the top tier you can see the rest of the inside of the ground . They need to buy up those houses and build a tunnel for the train make it more accessible for the fans to get into town. Lastly make the Stretford end one massive stand. Mufc20
Option D For me, i like the idea of a new stadium
100k+ Regardless of options. The extra 25k seating would all but pay the mortgage equivalent without triggering FFP sanctions. Then the other projects are affordable as well. Colour the bed pan in club colours and red devils.
