Why F1's 2022 Wheels are Slower but Better

If you have been keeping up with the new regulations coming to F1 in 2022, one of the most visually obvious changes is in the wheels. What's with those slim sidewalls? Or that convex hub? And what the hell are those little wings over the tires???

"no more tyre warmers" F1 becomes tokyo drift
You do know how they do in Toky-O
The current fat tire gives a huge amount of grip, but when it goes over that line it just snaps loose and it is pretty much impossible to correct. I think the smaller sidewall lets the car slide just a bit more, but it will be easier for the drivers to correct it. Less tire deformation makes the car more predictable.
Most of the snappiness of an F1 car comes from the yaw sensitivity of the aero package. They downforce drops off rapidly when the car isn't going straight through the air.
@@xeigen2 also considering how long these cars are it would be harder to correct a large snap
Is it, though? If a sidewall is larger, it takes more time for it to break traction and unload the tire, shorter sidewall would take longer to snap out of grip since it is not preloaded so much, but when it does, it has less momentum to realign to the rim therefore becoming more snappy in a way.
@@Arnechk Yeah exactly. There will be more spin outs with less sidewall ! The sport will become dangerous like in the 70-80s again.
but the suspension will be much more temperamental, potentially cancelling out any benefits

Johnny sins would like to know your location
That's what she said
but biggest is most often best.
Lmao best fact is that Johnny Sins hasnt a big D and doesnt consider a big size „better“😂
Your mom is in danger
I recently "upgraded" my wheels from 13 to 15" and the acceleration loss is definately noticable, but the wider surfice area makes that it handles better, and i have way less wheel spin when exiting a corner with some speed. I think i should go 14", best of both worlds :)
It's probably the width affect more than the wheel size having the effect. Tyre isn't light either if it's a small wheel and a huge tyre.
Bigger or smaller wheels will change the final ratio. You would need shorter gears or something like that to compensate bigger wheels.
@@HugoEscudeiro not if you change the tyre to also to match the original outer diameter.

I like the idea of Nascar using a more "street styled" tire, since... ya know.... "STOCK CAR"
I support the idea of NASCAR teams having to buy a car from a dealership, slapping a tune, roll cage, suspension and exhaust on that bitch, stripping everything else(or not) and taking it to the race. Then we could just have a bunch of hellcats and gt500s and whatever else(even supercars or japanese cars for that matter) going around an oval. Or imagine the homologation special editions that would come out of this, slippery, low drag, high power versions of current cars.
Weird they still use that term now though, didn't it used to be true stock muscle cars (or lightly modified)?

Perfect explanation, well earned sub, looking forward to more F1 related stuff :D
Thumbs up to the proper usage of "wheel" vs "rim" vs "tire"
Yes, but as a great philosopher said: when everyone is slower, noone is
The point is to prevent tyres blowing out to increase safety. Cars today have too much downforce and thus have incredible cornering speed thus putting immense forces into the tyres therefore the tyres blow.

Being into mountain biking and hearing about this is kinda funny to me just because of how modern bikes use wheel sizes at 27.5" and 29". The bigger wheels are harder to maneuver, accelerate, and decelerate, but have faster roll speeds once they do finally get up to speed. Of course, the bikes are all designed around bigger wheels and stuff, which are also, crucially, directly underneath the rider. Basically, what I'm thinking (and probably wrong about given the differences between a bike and a freaking F1 car) is that as FIA regulations change and billions of dollars go into R&D, the "finished product" could see some benefits as well. After all, top fuel dragsters, supercars, and some mountain bikes/motorcycles run mixed wheel sizes and are designed around that idea, so there's that to consider
I was thinking the same thing
Yeah, plus the bigger wheels/tires help you roll over rocks more easily than the smaller ones, which of course doesn’t help at all in F1 - unless your name is Mazepin 😆
I would really like if some bike manufacturer designed and produced 26" bike that had modern 27.5" or 29" bike's geometry. And then racing those against each other. 26" bikes, in comparison to modern designs, were short, tall framed, got steep steering geometry, and non ideal seattube angle for dropper post.
29ers are better in every way. Once you ride one for a few weeks then try to switch back, you’ll see.
@@stevenjalopnik1342 Egh. when I was choosing a bike I tested both 27,5 and a 29er. I didn't like the 29er. It handled like a tank compared to the 27,5 at technical parts of the track.

It's also due to the break through in rubber technology allowing for thinner, lighter stronger tires capable of reaching higher top speeds, should be implemented in 5 to 10 years.
@Bob Watters the rubber is limited for racing. They can make a tire that would last pretty much a whole race but that would get rid of pit stops making racing less entertaining. I believe they did a b2b on this.

HOW DO YOU NOT TALK ABOUT BRAKES?! One of the largest reasons production sports cars are getting bigger wheels is so they can fit bigger brakes. That's also the reason big luxury cars are getting big wheels too, they need to stop those gigantic land barges. Now f1 teams will be able to put larger brakes on their cars to make them stop on a dime even more... or at least stop as quickly as the tires will allow before sliding. Idk how y'all can forget about this crucial factor considering brakes are the usual reason for people like time attack teams get bigger wheels.
F1 cars use inboard brakes so they are completely independent of the wheel diameter. This is a big part of the reason why street car wheels keep getting bigger though.
"Your mom is so heavy that we decided to use her to hold our W12 during engine torque tests" Allisson, James
I always click on certain videos of yours and think I won't learn something this time, and sure enough, I learn like 30 things. Great content
Great explanation! One additional problem from higher moment of inertia (higher wheel mass distributed far from the center) is the resulting increased forces needed to change the spinning direction, meaning beefier steering system
I think the wheels moment of inertia isn’t the determining factor for how beefy the steering system is. Cornering forces are probably magnitudes higher.
I've been trying to explain this concept to so many people who can't seem to grasp it. Now I have something I can use as a reference :D Thanks. Even if the 18" wheel is the exact same weight as the 13", it will still be more difficult to spin and stop because the barrel is farther away from the center. This also means your brakes work more to slow down the wheels, so they heat up more.
HOWEVER, with far, FAR larger brake rotors available, airflow and heat dissipation on brakes is dramatically increased. Heat control leads to greater modulation ability and consistency (remember no ABS in F1.) Porsche pioneered 19" rear wheels on their 935's and tried to put 19" wheels on ultra-low-profile tires on the front, so truly gigantic brake rotors could be used, but the sidewall was too short and the tires slipped off of the rims during cornering due to the slow sloping nose of the 911-variant race cars, of which the 935 was one.
