Great acting, original design, and amazing visuals, Westworld has many Awards, including the Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.
But this award didn't just go to one VFX house... In fact, (in order to meet with the tremendous demand of around 3500 VFX shots per season) 10 different VFX companies worked on the show, including DNeg, Important Looking Pirates, Rise, Shade VFX, CoSA VFX, BOT VFX, Alkemy X, Technicolor VFX, Outpost VFX, and Juice.

The amazing thing about Westworld is that (even though they had to design cities. massive buildings, and do set extensions, even though they had to produce pyro effects, CG vehicles, and androids, and even though they had to create digital matte paintings, digital augmentations, and Robots, and then animate them in addition to all the compositing and color grading work)
They didn't actually don't do very much previs work.
Instead, they worked really closely with the production designer and art department in the early stages, scouting locations and developing concept artwork.
By starting with actual physical locations (Like the tower that was inspired by the Montjuic communications tower in Barcelona). they always had a specific style that they could mimic with their digital work.
This made the process a lot quicker than having to invent an aesthetic and go through a lengthy design process for every scene.
This also facilitated the process of creating Westworld's CG assets like machinery, robots, architecture, and technology.
Westworld had a tremendous amount of VFX work, some was because they needed to show somewhere or something that didn't exist, others were to extend or augment somewhere or something that did.
But because every visual effects shot was rooted in reality, they all went by unnoticed, and this allowed the story to shine through. instead of eclipsing it.

  • I wish we could see how they make these breakdowns. Like when all the houses are "dropped" into frame etc.

  • I really like this channel for exposing me and everyone interested in knowing how vfx works in movies and tv shows that have them. Thanx, man! Keep up the great work by showing us the REEL truth.

  • I think I may watch this show again. It was so good when It came out. The last ones were kind of bad but aren't they all?

  • It's really amazing🎉. But I have a question that " Which software you are using for this type editing like VFX effects? "

    • Are you asking what software these companies use to do their VFX, or what software Fame Focus uses to compile these breakdown videos? My guess would be Fame Focus gets special access to behind-the-scenes footage from these VFX studios, and cuts them together in Premiere. The VFX studios are using all kinds of software, mostly in-house tools they make themselves, but also 3rd party modelling tools like Maya, simulation tools like Houdini, and compositing tools like Nuke.

    • Actually, I would be very interested to know if Fame Focus is responsible for some of those clever “exploded view” animations of the composite layers and such. Do they just get the composite footage, and do all the fun animation and blending in After Effects? Or do they get pre-edited VFX reels that these studios have already cut together? I would think it’d be way too much work for Fame Focus to do this treatment for all the different productions with this channel’s turn-around for videos, unless they have a substantial team. Too much speculation... I demand a vfx breakdown of Fame Focus videos video! 🙃
