Hearing Dan nerd out like this is great. You can hear the joy in his voice the farther he goes in this- he needs to make this a regular thing for sure.
Yes! Dan is so great I now read my paperbacks with the voice and accent Dan in my head including his 'quote voice'
Dan's "quote voice" is GOAT
@@eddietheaggie2010 Voice of God!
Dan “I’ll pronounce Macedonian however the heck I want” Carlin.
i cringe a bit every time he says "mackedonians." not because im saying its right. but I know someone who was and he said it without the mack. also never heard anyone ever say mackedonians.
@@soy_tippi read about it is really Macke Not Masi
You mean correctly? The soft c is a relic of the translation to Latin.
And the Khan’s! All of em!
Bruh that's how you pronounce it 👎👎
I am Icelandic. I speak Icelandic, A.K.A. Old Norse. It's stayed mostly the same isolated on an island since Icelands settlement in 875(+-15 years). I don't know if they gave us the word or we them. But the word "Verangur" we still have. "Að vera í verangri." Means to be on a journey with a purpose(like a quest) The word Veröld means world and has the same base. Also "Að vera í Víking": To be in Viking. Means to be viking-ing, a verb. Both verangur and víking can be verbs. Like Jumping/Jumper. Verangur Verang Verangi Verangs
Are you really named after the allfather?
Cool, so is that the etymological origin of the phrase "Varangian"?

Perfect timing, i was just about to sleep. So much for that.
Just two hours... Crazy how the brain works.
get some rest then treat yourself
Me too
I hope you have got some sleep by now
This show was personally interesting to me for a very particular reason. My earliest recorded ancestor was one of those Norman proto-knights under William the Conqueror. At Hastings, he apparently was responsible for removing William’s damaged face guard, which was hampering his ability to breathe. For this deed, he was given the name Ayre (air) and made a minor noble of some sort.

You and about 5 million other people probably share that same ancestor. It is waaaaayyyy less rare than you think it is
lol he is the jester
Dan, I know you play Total War. 😂
Who doesn't?
Please Dan.
/twg/ is what got me into hardcore history like 8 or 9 years ago
Right
Too accurate
I can't tell you how happy I am that you've covered this. Having recently gotten back in to war gaming, you're making me want to build a historical army or two.
New DC episode? Must be Christmas! Happy days- thanks Dan

Rogan introduced me to Carlin, years ago. Thanks a lot Joe. Carlin does excellent work!
Same here
Yup yup thanks Joe
When he mentions his childhood or his past as a radio host I realize he is not a disembodied voice thats lived for thousands of years and experienced all this history
You wait 3 days, it's gonna be like WW1 in the middle ages. Thats the best analogy i ever heard regarding roman battle fortifications. Love your work Dan.
Hooray! More Hardcore History!!! Congrats on the new VR experience Dan, but I’m super excited to get more podcast!
Re-listening again, Jesus I love this episode so much :D Dan, I would totally game the hell out of it with you. Providing your minis are painted of course. And the terrain is plausible. Drinks on me.
This show was one of those that definitely tickled my fancy. More of these kind would be cool.
This should be great thanks for the upload.
Stellar work as usual Dan. Surely the greatest storytelling voice in recent times.
Yes! First video to show up on my notifications since I subscribed a few weeks ago. So exited!
This is the only channel I highlight the bell for.
This just made my weekend. Thank you so much for the amazing work you always do
Bless you Dan!
Thank you Dan. Ur the first notification I received cause I finally signed up instead of just listening. I had a rough day and this is the best way to reset.
This is four years old so dan was always an amazing speaker..its like he cant get better 4 years on and the podcast isnt better its just as good..i think that means this is as close to a perfect podcast as you can get.Dan i dont kill time when i listen to your stuff it truly makes my life better...cheers dude!
Hes been doing this a lot more than 4 years lol
Dan, thank you so much for the new content.
Thank you Dan. You're wonderful.
I get so happy any time this channel posts something
Always a good day when Dan posts a new show!!!
Yes! Thank you Dan!
Dan you are the reason to shut my phone off at night and not check it when I go pee. . This is gonna be a long bathroom break, but a short Hardcore History. Love love your work.
Who the hell could dislike this?? It amazes me. You're my hero dan, made my day.
this episode was wonderfully nerdy and I loved it
thankyou for a very entertaining 2 hours dan you are a true historical visionary stellar work
I haven't listened to this podcast yet, except enough to hear your question. My money would be with Julius Caesar, hands down. I had to spend my high school sophomore year reading Caesar's Gallic Wars in Latin complete with my Latin teacher reminding us every class that, contrary to popular opinion, Latin was not a dead language.
Got me with the war games references. Imagine a game of Axis and Allies with Dan Carlin? Great episode.
I am so thrilled to have found this channel!! Love iiiiiit. ^_^
The thing about replacing Napoleon with Alexander the greats army made me think of the Swedish 17th century tactic called "gå på" (go on). They used that lull in the fire to close on the enemy and turn to a fierce melee combat. That led to the swedes beating much bigger forces with equal equipment.
Bring out the snacks, 2 hours of my favorite storyteller coming right up.
WOOO!!! LOVE THE CONTENT, THANK YOU BEN AND DAN :)
I love this man
I can tell by your profile pic.
This one was great! I would love some more alternative history military battles!
Been waiting so long! Thanks Dan
I want more of this content, asap. You should also cover the civil war that would be so cool.
YES! new Dan Carlin.. finally. you just made my day Dan Carlin ;)
He's not sounding too good... was getting worried... and now I am even more so lol. Keep doing what you do, Danny Boy. You are changing the world.
His wrestling nickname is Dan Daymaker Carlin.
Welcome bk man..ur a true story teller...you have a great way about you..
Monk Kustan I mm
I love these talks the best. Where he mixes things up and throws a dash of wargaming on for good measure.
your in the top 2 favorite podcasts.. I push your brand to every jobsite guy I run into in the field. I'd love to see more of your work. I bought the wrath of the khans on Google play, as well as the supernova series. U da man Dan!!!!!
So happy for a new video 👍
Thank you as always Dan.
Thank You!
Enjoyed the show, well thought out points.
As much as i love his podcasts i find these What if episodes a waste of time. Just Fiction. Their are so many great stories he could tell. Life is Stranger than Fiction,
Dan Carlin, you ARE the real hero!!! 100% Appreciation for your content.
Listened to this on a podcast app. Came here to say that this is definitely a genre I love as part of the addendum umbrella.
Besides Rogans podcast. The only thing on the KZhead I look forward to. Thanx Dan.....
_THANK YOU!_
Great episode, I love war-games, more please. Also, what a coincidence I watched 'Final Countdown' 2 days before listening to this :)
dan carlin uploads be like the girl that leaves your DMs on seen but then you wake up in the morning to a couple of paragraphs
you just described my entire life
I am old - no idea what any of that means....
Translated* The gentleman Dan Carlin is similar to a lady to whom you send the occasional letter with the intent to court, but never received a response, although you have confirmed with the mailman that the letters had been delivered. But, one morning you awaken to see that she has replied with a long 20 page letter which you eagerly read

Dan I have assignments due and Exams! Don't tempt me Frodo!
I do as well. I'm acing Political Science because of this guy. Learn to multi-task or fall by the wayside, Sam. (I'm Took, btw lol)
YOU SHALL NOT do very well in those assignments if you spend all your time listening to podcasts.
(Shrugs) my a's speak for themselves. ;)
Awesome work Dan and ben!
Listened to the podcast earlier. Great way to start a Friday. Stopped in just to smash that Like button.
Love this! However one thing that usually seems to be forgotten in these battles is roman artillery, Ceasar would've had access to both ballista and bolt throwers that could've been set rapidly. Ceasar himself praised the accuracy of scorpions which could have done massive damage to Norman cavalry
Yaaaaaayyy! Hi Ben. Finally got Dan back to work, eh? You saved my sanity. for one more evening. Thank you!
Was just listening to Revolutions podcast, which reminded me of you and made me wonder if I'd missed an upload. Then I saw this! Very excited based on the topic
Legit same. Was on 3.34a where they mentioned the 12 Presidents podcast. Hbu?

I learnt more in this two hours than I did in my entire education at school
Hell man I was born in '90 and play wargames of all sorts today. Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Historical. Great hobby!
Now this is a real historian exactly how it should be approached in my opinion many thanks

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
Wooo...Hoooo! Another Dan Carlin upload...simply awesome.
You need to watch Down Periscope. The world war ii-era diesel submarine versus the US Nuclear Navy in a war game. Hijinks ensue
Listened to it the minute I saw it came out. Fantastic as usual. I want to hear a mongol versus Rome now
The Partians defeated Crasus, the Mongols were a modern tactics army and no matter how awesome it would be to be in the roman legion I would not rather face the Mongols at any circuimstances in an open battle
Mongols also lost wars to Egypt, so I think The romans have a chance
If it is a first encounter I think that most probably the Mongols would destroy the Romans.. What I like about Rome and what makes it a super power is that they learn from it's defeats so the second one would be a memorable one
Love these
I’m a big fan of the hch addendum concept, I really like the structure and how they’re evolving. When are we getting another one of these?
This is literally the plot of a manga/anime called 'Drifters'. Famous historic war participants are snatched up at the moment of death on the battlefield and thrown in a new land to fight against each other via 2 factions. Oda Nobunaga, Hannibal, Scipio, Joan of Arc, Tamon Yamaguchi from wwII japanese navy (and he has his aircraft carrier the Hiryū), Gilles de Rais, Hitler was present but died (again) before the story really starts. Quite a few japanese warriors, obviously. I loved it.. But anyway...if anyone is into niche japanese comics/animation about warriors from different time periods commanding armies and going at it.. Well there you go, lol..
Thank you for the recommendation.
Sounds awesome, is it shoen jump?
@@ryanshaw2937 No its a Seinen manga/anime aimed at older audiences. It has entirely too many references to history and politics, war and generally things aimed at young to older adults.
@@hannibalwrecktor5506 Cool man ill track it down i asked as i the have shoen jump manga app its pretty cool for like £2 a month

I enjoyed this. It was a light, fluffy, fun ride, like Carlin let his early-90s Jim Carey take over for a couple hours. Whee Addenda! Also, the movie concept might totally work as a Cloverfield Paradox sequel, because they already have a valid open-ended time-shift laying around.
Hey congrats on the Twilight Zone reboot Dan! I can't wait to see how they use your wonderful oratory skills.
This is why I love you dan
