  • There might be a lot of power cuts and poor ventilation in slums, and people will be sweating. Daily wage earners cannot work because it's too hot, then there will be no money. Luckily, painting houses white could help lower the temperature. Also, external funding for the painters allows them to subsidise the cost, and everyone can afford it.

  • Dog days are back with a bang here in India. August is the monsoon season here and climate is supposed to be pleasant. But we have been reeling under sweltering heat since the end of February as if this were an extended summer. Power black outs have become the order of the day ,especially in rural India. Power outages mean non-functioning of energised motors that are meant to extract ground water to irrigate rain dependent crops or crops in areas where the assured mode of water supply is erratic. The situation comes to such a pass that most crops wither away, throwing poor farmers deep into debt trap. The less we talk about the subsidies ,the better. Inferior seeds partly fail to germinate, adulterated manures fail to fertilise and phoney pesticides keep the pests alive resulting in either very little agricultural yield or total crop loss. Farmers who borrowed money from loan sharks at exorbitant interest rates for cultivation bear the brunt of this vicious cycle.More often than not, these subsidies are syphoned off by touts and middle men with false identities leaving the targeted beneficiaries, mostly poor farmers, in the lurch. The above contents are my personal opinion and not meant to denigrate or defame any individual/agency/institution.Thank to BBC for this informative video highlighting some of the prevailing conditions in India.
