Just a thing to note, the CV12 has been trialled with 1500HP and potentially 2000HP settings before, but reliability went out the window. Perhaps they made some changes to the transmission/engine components to allow it to run at an increased power?
one of the causes of unreliability in engines is often overheating, perhaps the new cooling system is able to overcome that issue. the challenger 2 LEP was supposed also get a rail fuel enjector and cooling system which would bring its hp to 1600. i would not be suprised if these are also done to the challenger 3.

A hard Kill active protective System is included in the Challenger 3 contract with BAE and Rheinmetal. But they didnt state which one

Turret and hull armor protection are being upgraded as well. I'd imagine they will likely be replacing the composite with some newer design. Probably accounts for why Challenger 3 is planned to put on a few extra tons of weight.

Abrams definitely needs the L55. This is awesome. I like the higher pressure upgrade too! 👍🇩🇪🇬🇧👍 When the M1 first came outit was said to be capable of 60mph, but it was then governed to prevent undue wear. Maybe it's something like that.
I could definitely see the original M1 hitting 60mph+, weighing only 55t and powered by 1500hp and 5000 ft-lbs of torque, the speed potential certainly added up. Heavy and underpowered Chally tho? Not so much.
@@GeneralLee131 That was in trials without the governor of course. 🤗
I had heard that CR3 was going to get a fairly major engine upgrade, which makes sense since the current engines are getting very very long in the tooth now.
Could you sometime in the future do t-72m4cz, just some mention and comparison pls
As for the "not needing TES" it's ALWAYS gonna need TES when going into battle, or the Dorchester/ERA armour blocks to cover that front lower glacis-plate that're FROM the Theatre Entry Standard pack at the very least, it's gonna still need that on there APS or no APS. As for the driver's viewport, show me a tank where that's NOT a weak-spot, the driver still has to see doesn't he, even if you replaced the viewport with cameras instead it'd still be a relatively thin vertical part of the armour. It's also a pretty small target though
@@komradearti9935 what the hell are you talking about? TES would definitely be fitted during "a large scale war", that's what it's bloody FOR lol! Additional protection greater than what's considered necessary during peacetime, and in particular for when going into high-threat environments like the urban warfare in Iraq! And when it IS fitted, that's a solid block of the same Dorchester composite armour as on the turret front, it'll stop anything up to and including a direct hit by 120mm APFSDS. As for "chieftain heritage" the only thing Challenger 3 has in common with Chieftain at this point is a name starting with "C" lol, and as for MBT-80 sure it might have been better but outside of games of War Thunder we'll never know now, that's a discarded prototype whereas the Challenger series is the tank we actually have, gotta just make the most of it
@@komradearti9935 I know perfectly well what I'm talking about 'Komrade', maybe you should study a little harder before trying to lecture me on the subject, TES will stop virtually anything thrown at it kinetic or otherwise
Idk, Originally I thought Trophy looked alright on the Leopard when viewed from above, made the turret look even more buff. But from the front... jesus christ, it looks like they would fall off during a bumpy ride or something...

4:29 Somebody watched too much Girls Und Panzer while making that presentation
An APS is going to be equipped, they simply haven't issued the contract for it. Mainly as neither Rheinmetall or BAE have a APS for sale, so contracting an APS from a third party would have to happen after the annoucement of the contract for RBSL for the Challenger 3
Of course their is an Rheinmetall APS. AMAP-ADS!
Great video, good commentary as well. You failed to point out however that in a combat drinking scenario surely the British crew would have advantage 🍻
You almost got it lol. So it will be getting an active protection system (as others have pointed out) and it will also be getting a laser warning system as well. Both of these are on the graphic showing CR2 VS CR3. It also says "upgraded engine and improved cooling" I don't see anywhere where is states it is still 1200hp 🤔

The CV12-8A fitted to the “royal engineers variant” runs at 1200hp.
@@HJDore I believe the hydraulic fan cooling packs have a fan disconnect which effectively gives them an extra 100 bhp for short bursts. People pay way too much attention to rated bhp figures. For example leopard 2's cooling fans consume 20% of its engine power compared to CR2's 8%.

Could you ever do a video on canadian leopard tanks? we have different variants here in canada and I wonder if they're comparable to the 2A7 or abrams and other sophisticated tanks out there
It should be noted, other tanks have exceeded that 82kph record, but have not done so without modification that can cause serious damage to the vehicle. The M1 Abrams back in 1984 was clocked doing 65mph, however, it achieved this by removing the speed governor and it was found to be extremely unstable. At that speed the tracks literally start to expand to the point that they can come off the drive wheel due to the centrifugal force from mass/acceleration. The Scorpion can achieve it's speed on a combat load. Honestly I wouldn't want to be anywhere near an Abrams moving at that speed because if it throws a track it could end up in one of the most terrifying flips you would ever witness considering that's 62 metric tons (105mm variant) rolling. It would cause serious damage to anything in the area and most likely kill the crew rolling at that speed.
the challenger is getting a new engine, it is stated in its unveil video that it will be getting a powerpack upgrade. I dont know why you missed that as it was one of the biggest upgrades mentioned.
The powerpack upgrade is only the new cooling, still 1200hp.
@@Jonathan-js3vi nope, engine's been upgraded too, increased to 1600bhp
@@1IbramGaunt I'm actually really confused at this point. wikipedia mentions a 1600hp engine, I remember the presentation mentioning it as well. However, army mod uk doesn't mention an upgrade to the engine at all. The speed given also only makes sense if they mean 60 KPH. The Tank got heavier, but the improved cooling allowed it to keep it's max speed. But if it really got 400 extra hp, you would expect it's top speed to go into the 70s or maybe 80s, which fits neither 60 KPH nor 60 MPH. So yeah, for now I don't see it having a 1600 HP engine. Unless we discard the 60 MPH/KPH as bogus info, in which case good job with the presentation guys.
@@poccer7722 the engine's gonna be upgraded, trust me, regardless of whether the MOD are actually officially saying so yet. @@poccer7722 as for the speed thing just ignore the 60mph/100kph thing, that was clearly a mistake or typo or exaggeration. I just wish they would change that lower frontal plate. It's still a major weak point if you ask me.
I mean it’s been in service for almost 30years and is yet to be killed so I think it’s not

But it can’t compete with Arjun 🥸
I know the joke but even 2a4 can outclass that tank
@@soto1649 If you know the joke, why don't you go along with it :(
Just a couple things, the drivers view port on challenger 2 is not a weak spot. while it looks like one, as far as I know there's a slab of composite behind the viewport. also they're also looking into giving challenger 3 an aps, they just haven't chosen it yet the engine and transmission are definitely getting an upgrade, I don't see why you think they are, it was even mentioned in the video - and yes, it can go 100kph. the rheinmetall demonstrator could go 115 but it tore the track off in testing so it was limited and the hull armour will most certainly be getting an upgrade, the rheinmetall 130mm demonstrator had new armour and that was another competitor for challenger 3 but was declined because it was too expensive, however afaik that armour is being put on the one chosen
No, there is definitely not composite armor behind the periscope, there is Oy the turret ring, which is the most vulnerable part of a tank. There is not even any space for composite armor in that spot since thats where the turret ring is.
I served on CR1 and CR2. The biggest gripe we had when CR2 was introduced was having the same power pack as the CR1. I was hoping they were just going to use the 2E hull with the MTU pack for CR3. I was under the impression that a new engine was being fitted ? Whether that is the MTU pack or an uprated CV12 I have no idea. I hope it is not the latter though. As for the weakness of the front plate and Dvr's viewport, that is not something that would concern me. The front plate can be up-armored and if fighting in a European environment you are meant to be engaging from a hull-down position anyway. Most Tank soldiers would be more concerned with an Arty round landing on top of the wagon which would be a very bad day.
we do the engines at work mate, and a lot of us were under the impression that it would get the Europack, I think it would be better. But its gonna be an engine similar to the 8A
T72 b Best tank. Muhaha. Naa Only fun. I really like your chanell and your Kontent.
arjun tank is the best tank lol
@@drsm7947 Are you dumb? The Bob Semple is by far the best.
@@theanglo-lithuanian1768 no no. You are completely wrong again, we all know that the best tank belongs to world renown designer Leonardo Da Vinci and his tank that has the capabilities at firing at all directions!
@@TheAmericanLarper hahaha😂, i totally forgot about that. You are right.
Hard Kill APS has been confirmed, they're just waiting to sign the contract.
No it hasn't. Only the infrastructure to support APS has been added to the tank. APS was not part of the initial LEP program.
@@jackseaward2330 I suggest you go to the British Army and their official website then, as they're saying with their info that you're full of shit.
@@CabbageBloke That the same one that say's it can go 60 mph?
@@jackseaward2330 Red Effect got the power output wrong and the engine upgrades it is getting. Direct Injection and upgraded cooling.
Engine will be upgraded to a 1500hp version of the current one under a different program, HAAIP. However there NO WAY that increase in hp/t would allow Cr3 to get to 100 km/h.
No it’s not. HAAIP concluded with the decision to use the CV12-8A but being it up to a 9A standard.
In the early 90s an Abrams tank driver told me the tank would go as fast as they wanted - classified - but, really really really fast without the governor. Easily 70 or 80 mph if memory serves. I’m wondering if the challenger 3 has cooling and governor changes that allow for 60mph?

If only the T-14 was good for anything other than parades
@@spacemarinesruleall хахахахахаха you Joke me?
@@spacemarinesruleall well, T-14 is more like a demostrator.... No decent amounts are comming as they lack funds...
Challenger the best, leopard second aaand abrams (just to keep it in the game)
I’ve heard the engine will indeed be upgraded. 1400bhp, but this has turned out to be not happening, pretty disappointing. However yeah, 60mph is a typo.
We really could have done with a new hull. But budget cuts being what they are and a greater proportion being dedicated to new ships, planes and electronic warfare. This I think is the best they could do.
I’m better than challenger 3. Even arjun is better than challenger me.
Hell, even I'm better than Challenger 3, and I'm a base model T-90A
60mph : I read that as 60 meter per hour, it's a british tank after all
Meaning.
nice xD
I think they did say the Challenger 3 will get APS in the future. Even the infographic you included in the video mentions it is awaiting contracts. I mean of course it could never come, but they at least plan on including it in the future. I also thought they did change the engine??? At least I recall seeing mentions of that but I might be wrong
News on the engine keeps changing, now they’re saying it’s going to have the 9A version of the CV12, not the 8A as originally stated. The 9A is an upgrade by Caterpillar, and apparently makes 1500bhp.
