Hello, DOOM watchers! Since many of you are asking - this epic gameplay was captured by id Software using an Intel I9 7900X @ 3.3Ghz with 32GB of memory and a GeForce RTX 3080 vs. RTX 2080 Ti. The DOOM Eternal game settings are 4K, Ultra-Nightmare quality, FOV set at 120, and resolution scaling disabled, with HDR OFF, with no ray tracing or DLSS. RTX 2080 Ti can run DOOM Eternal at 4k 100 FPS max settings with HDR (been doing this on my LG C9 OLED TV). But the game is so technologically special I've been waiting for the RTX 3090 so I can do 120 FPS instead.

I have an RTX 3080. This is definitely a best-case scenario. In raw compute power the 3080 is actually 2x as fast as a 2080 ti but in games, the gains are actually closer 30% on average. Still impressive though!

Procedurally generated games will push it way way harder than a tightly optimised linear shooter. This footage is impressive but Eternal is a slick game already. Let's see this run the release version of No Man's Sky, looooool.
Really they could have showcased using a game the 2080ti struggled with. Maybe something like AC odyssey Maxed or RDR2 or Control with ray tracing.

I'd like to interject for a moment, while this is great, it's the best case scenario, meaning in a 4K resolution (without DLSS) and on the id Tech 7 engine which is among the most optimized game engines, so it's the best case scenario to compare raw pixel fill rate. But on lower resolution and less CPU optimized games, the increase in FPS will be lower.
Here to say that you were correct. I had the same hunch at the time, especially the fact that the engine for Doom is so well optimized. I am running a 3080 Ti and even on 1440p some games are bottlenecked by either the CPU (5800X) or the engine limitations. 4K is not ideal in the most demanding games (< 60FPS still), but it does at least push the 3080 to its limits.

that FPS shift is insane. There would be a lot of microstuttering unless G-sync is on. What monitor is being used?
Gsync doesn't fix all screen tearing and microstuttering. It still happens occasionally. I have a Gsync monitor and it's recommended to use Vsync in combination with Gsync.

The 2080Ti price was literally 2x what it should have cost though. The performance gain is pretty good, but the pricing is just back to normal. Every -80Ti card before the 2080Ti was $700 or less. The 2080Ti was less powerful than expected, and included an alpha version of RTX for 2 games, all for a nice 70% price increase over the 1080Ti. I'm glad they're back to charging reasonable prices for good performance gains, but this isn't any feat of engineering, they just can't afford to keep milking $1200 for a $700 card this generation.

Considering how optimised Doom Eternal is, this is more of a showcase of Id Tech 7 than it is of the RTX 3080

Yeah considering the Vega 56 in my laptop plays it maxed out 144fps 1080p, and 120fps on a 5700XT at 3440x1440. The engine is great, something they've managed to just keep improving on every generation. The Wolfenstein reboots looked photo perfect and ran well on several generation old hardware. I think Bethesda needs to look across the hall for inspiration for their next open world game engine for Fallout/Elder Scrolls.

Sincerely, I can't see a reason to upgrade gaming from 1080p maybe I need to use glasses, but for me, from 1080p to 4k isn't the same visual jump as from 720p to 1080p.

4k really pops on open world long range games alot better than high speed/linear games.

The player is good and knows the flow, but this was clearly played on Hurt Me Plenty. I saw several moments where on Nightmare, they'd be dead.

@EbuGamer Was it draqu? Seemed like whoever was playing knew how to play, but wasn't playing on their own setup probably not using his own keybindings/mouse/mousepad and a 4k monitor was probably new as well

Hdmi 2.1 can only reach 4k 120fps without compression, so his human eyes can't see above 120fps even if the PC is rendering more

@@FAQUERETERMAX you have no idea what you are talking about, 4k @ 144 without compression uses 39.19 Gb/s, hdmi 2.1 does 48 Gb/s. You can get up to about 4k 175 hz uncompressed before running out of bandwidth.
