African Kid Sees White Guy, Thinks He's A Ghost (#51)

One day, on a casual hike through the Rwenzori mountains in western Uganda, we stumbled upon a secluded village that apparently doesn't get many visitors from abroad. I mean, like none. The reactions to seeing a muzungu (white person) for the first time were...well, let's just say unexpected.

  • The first time I visited Switzerland, I was sat in a restaurant and a boy about 2.5 years old came and bit my hand. I thought he was a brat but he kept screaming - Chokolaaaaa, Chokolaaaaaa. The parents were so embarrassed and apologized profusely. I didn’t know why everyone in the restaurant was laughing to hard until they explained that the boy thought I was a big Chocolate 🍫. I’m an African. Kids everywhere are so innocent. In Europe when I wear my Afro, I allow the kids to touch my hair but say no to adults.

  • In my childhood these are things i used to believe 😅😅 1. In fourth grade, I used to believe some fascinating things. I thought the Earth was flat, floating on water, and that if we used too much water, the Earth would sink, causing summer. Conversely, if we conserved water, the levels would rise, bringing us closer to the sun and initiating summer. 2. At that time, I also had some interesting ideas about our bodies. I thought we were made entirely of water and food, with no bones. When I learned about bones, I was scared of jumping and being hit, so I told my teacher not to punish me physically. 3. Another belief I had was that standing in the rain would make me taller. 4. I was convinced that the Ben 10 watch was real, and even at 21, I still hold onto that belief. 5. A memorable incident was when I went to the movies and saw a fire scene. I panicked, thinking it was real, and screamed for my parents to leave because I didn't want to die. 6. Lastly, I believed that the moon followed me at night because my mom once jokingly told the moon to do so.

  • This reminds me of my own childhood ignorance. I'm from Northeast Africa but as a child, i was terrified the first time i saw a South Sudanese man ( they're the tallest, darkest people in Africa). Later in 2nd grade, they brought this girl with light colored eyes ( greyish green, i think) and the children surrounded her saying "wow, she has eyes just like a cat". That's the only think we could compare it to because we'd never seen any human with that eyes before. Kids are innocent and honest. I doesn't surprise me that such first encounters happen around the world in places with little exposure to outside world.
