  • I can watch Tonight Shows that are 50 years old and laugh just as hard as if they are live. Think we’ll be able to say that in50 years about todays hosts. I can watch Ed Ames or Albert Brooks doing impressions after eating different foods forever. Never gets old.

    • I wouldn't say that. I agree that he was the best, and some current late-night hosts agree with that. David Letterman idolized Carson, but things change with times, and Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers are pretty good. The others, although different, are also talented hosts (Stephen Colbert, James Corden). Jimmy Fallon is also talented, but I don't watch him as much.

  • Johnny was a masterclass in the art of conveying thoughts through a simple expression. He could read a moment and make it so much funnier with just a subtle look. His ability to turn a moment where things weren't working and turn it into a very funny moment for everyone is almost a lost art these days. You can tell his influences were from the much older era of entertainers in Hollywood, his reactions and expressions are almost vaudevillian in nature. I only saw his show from the late 80s until his retirement in the 90s and even though he was much older then he was still must watch even for me as a young kid. I'm so glad I got to see him when he was still with us. Brilliant man... just brilliant. We'll never see this class of person on TV ever again I'm afraid.

    • Great insight; also, Johnny revered Jack Benny, who also had a flair for great timing. Remember Jack would say something, or someone else said something humorous, and Jack Benny would look to the side, in mock disbelief almost. Very good, and Johnny had that mastered, as shown.

    • @@josephfrank1472 The originals ARE great. But it would be nice to see this style of showmanship and class in a modern, topical show today. It's so fun to watch these old clips, but I, for one, would actually watch late night television if modern stars were interviewed like they were on Carson. Granted, you'd have to find a host as great as Carson to begin with - and, unfortunately, they broke the mold when they made him. There'll never be another Johnny Carson.

    • Elizabeth Blake I grew up 15 minutes from Hollywood and remember watching Carson with my mother, who adored him (I think a lot of women her generation had "crushes" on Johnny 😏). He was the best of the late show hosts (I loved Steve Allen also for his intellect and silly "man on the street" bits). But the gregarious, witty Johnny Carson we saw on tv was his stage persona. In private life, Carson was a loner - and not a happy one, he had a lot of demons. He shunned most everyone and preferred to be alone on his boat. He had a very serious drinking problem (even though his sidekick Ed McMahon was the supposed drunk) and could be very, VERY nasty, foul-mouthed, verbally abusive to business colleagues. It's well known that he was physically abusive to his first two wives. Despite "having it all", the real Johnny Carson was a very angry, vindictive drunk, insufferably arrogant to his staff, his lawyers and managers, the "little people" who worked behind the camera. He was a mean SOB who held himself above others, never apologized, held lifelong grudges, and expected EVERYONE to kiss his a@#. After he died, biographies about "the real Johnny Carson" detailed why most people did not like working with him, did not trust him, and even feared him. Remember what he did to Joan Rivers? One of his long-suffering ex-wives befriended Truman Capote and confided to him the misery and abuse of "life with Johnny." She and Truman became such close friends and confidantes that, when she died, her ashes were interred with Capote's at Westwood Village Mortuary (a couple rows over from Marilyn Monroe). Was Johnny Carson "the performer" a great tv host and personality? Absolutely! Was Johnny Carson "the man" a nice guy you'd want to hang out with? HELL NO!

  • I was laughing like crazy. These bid ones were the best, and Johnny handled it perfectly.

  • Johnny started as host 3 weeks before his 37th birthday on Oct. 1, 1962, and quit at only 66 on May 22, 1992. He could have gone another 2 to 3 years, as nobody could challenge him in the ratings on other networks. His sharp comic timing, facial expressions showing exasperation (with a bird that doesn't perform), or disgust (when a rooster takes a dump on his desk) shows how outstanding he was as a stand-up comic. Except for one or two exceptions in social commentary with his nightly monologues, I'd rank Johnny the 3rd best of all time in that category! He wrote for David Letterman, as most of us know, after he stopped being host, and was delighted when David used some of his gags on his own show. He was smart to always avoid strong political talk, saying, "I'm on TV five nights a week; I have nothing to gain by it and everything to lose." Recent talk show hosts should learn that one thing on how Johnny conducted himself in throwing zingers no matter who or what party was the target! A classy, but painfully shy man when in private! He always talked on his show about his hometown of Norfolk, NE, but he was born in Corning, IA. He was only 79 when he left this world. The world misses you forever, Johnny. R.I.P. Oct. 23, 1925 Corning, IA - Jan. 23, 2005 Los Angeles, CA.

  • I seem to recall Carson trying to get the myna bird to say "My name is Johnny", but the bird replied "Ha ha ha".
