This summer, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly … reducing their entire lives into a single day.
The film stars an impressive international cast including Golden Globe winner Gael García Bernal (Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Rufus Sewell (Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle), Ken Leung (Star Wars: Episode VII-The Force Awakens), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Jupiter Ascending), Abbey Lee (HBO’s Lovecraft Country), Aaron Pierre (Syfy’s Krypton), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Embeth Davidtz (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), Emun Elliott (Star Wars: Episode VII-The Force Awakens), Kathleen Chalfant (Showtime’s The Affair) and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit).
Old is a Blinding Edge Pictures production, directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, from his screenplay based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters. The film is also produced by Ashwin Rajan (Glass, AppleTV+’s Servant) and Marc Bienstock (Glass, Split). The film’s executive producer is Steven Schneider.

  • The movie had a really interesting and creative concept. I think it was good but very depressing or at least I feel depressed after watching it. Something you can definitely take out of this movie is that life is short, we should cherish it and people close to us while we still have them.

  • I watched this last night and what a brilliant peace of writing and direction, the concept is outstanding and the pace keeps you on the edge all the time , the child actors gave great performances and the plot twist at the end was so cool , the film was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish and makes you realise that time is very short in a life , it gives the effect of grains of sand falling in a sand clock …..

    • I agree. I just wish the storyline had gone further as I think there was so much more left to be told. Shyamalan did a great job with what he had. Interesting but not my favorite. Shyamalan has had some great movies & the Wayward Pines Series was amazing.

      @misplacedsouthern1236@misplacedsouthern12369 ай бұрын
    • I agree too. Shyamalan does such a wonderful job of capturing the mood of the citizenry and reflecting it back to us through imagery and subtlety. The despair and anxiety we felt with 9/11 went into Signs and those same feelings with COVID (along with many other themes) went into Old. Critics generally missed the point of this film.

  • Me and my wife weren't ready for this movie. It was insane rollercoaster of feelings. As a viewer I felt that time for me was moving fast as well, I couldn't properly react to the events, because everything was changing rapidly and scene around campfire struck right in the heart of my disoriented feelings. It's a shame that this movie has so low ratings.

    @Neotenyx@Neotenyx5 ай бұрын
  • The theatrical poster design is a direct reference to the graphic novel, Sandcastle, which inspired this film. It's from a moment in which a character tells a tale about "a strange old man who had half of everything: half a head, half a body, and half of his arms and legs." Old (2021) marks the first time M. Night Shyamalan has filmed entirely outside Greater Philadelphia since his first film Praying with Anger (1992). However, Guy and Prisca mention that Philadelphia is where they live. The film is an adaptation of a 2010 graphic novel by writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and artist Frederik Peeters called Sandcastle. When asked what inspired him to adapt the book to film, director M. Night Shyamalan explained: "The book gave me the opportunity to work through a lot of anxieties I had around death and aging, and things like my parents getting older." Near the end, the notebook they find that contains a written possible theory and other victims' names is said to have belonged to a science fiction writer. This is a direct reference to the graphic novel wherein the main character that comes up with theories for their unusual situation is a science fiction writer.

  • Hello, Being that this film is eleven months, old & there are thousands of comments; perhaps no one will ever read this but......... First: I found, the writing of script to be, "Richly, Written" At the outset, I was intrigued, frightened, angered; then I was bewildered. Then, this intelligent film, found a home in my heart. Second, I was intrigued, simple, the film brought to life the element, of family and my apparent illness'. Frightened, simply as, " What? Why? Who?" Is doing this, to these, people? Angered, simply, I thought it was the black guy, "Who" was commenting murder.( Damn, why is it also the black guy, who's a criminal?( In this film, I was glad that the black guy, didn't die, within, the first 15 minutes of this film ). Then. I was bewildered, simply, as the characters were deeply pained: the black guy, had professional parents....I enjoyed the main family, whom were French. ( I loved hearing the French accent, as it reminded me of my holidays in France. ( I stated that this film brought personal elements, of my life, to the forefront. ) Third: Intrigue, I thought, it was that the management of the hotel, that was the culprit.....but why? Were the managment psycho? No. The water got more and more murky. ( Why does Director: M.Knight Shyamalan, have a difficulty with water? "Signs" Water kills aliens / "The Lady in the Pool" ...) Cerebral, turned the writing, as we, find that the resort, has made a holiday, exclusively for ill people via a pharmacy. Even more so, that the resort is conducting medical surveys, on 73 different groups. And using the vacationers, to formulate cures, for illnesses. This film, has Psychological, twists & turns. The element, that the Island itself, won't let the subjects leave. That the rocks, had a form of mental prowess. That, within hours the people got older....the young children, grew, one became a father, we saw an Alzheimers, victim evolve more away from his greatness as a surgeon; to hallucinations; ( The elements of Alzheimers, struck a chord with me, as my mother was an Alzheimers victim. ) Lastly, as I believed, that these scientists, were going to get away, with their experiments and group number 74, were arriving; A child's coding, saved the two protagonists, to where they could elaborate their experiences and turn the resort into the authorities. This was, the most cerebral film, that I had the privilege, of watching in a long time; Perhaps, the last such film was "Andromeda Strain" Original film circa 1970s. Smile, I studied theater, at Fordham University and I would love to act, or edit a film for Mr. M. Knight Shyamalan. Certificate: Field Producer B.A.M ( Brooklyn, N.Y ) All the very best Shaun of NYC 🦉🦉

Authors and makers of movies - related to this genre- make a lot of efforts to entertain the audience. Fearing situations that will never happen is a waste of beautiful time.

  • It was a pretty good movie but it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped from Director M Night Shyamalan who continuously raises the bar on his own self. He’s brilliant. Sixth Sense, Signs, Glass, The Village, Unbreakable, The Visit, Split and so many more including the Series, Wayward Pines, are just a few examples of his work. He’s amazing. He usually has the twisted endings you just don’t see coming, much like this one and of course in the same Style as the great Hitchcock! I’ll watch anything Shyamalan Directs, as I know it won’t be a waste of time. This wasn’t one of my favorites but then, I think he’s spoiled me and likely others, who want everything he does to be a complete hit. Shyamalan does the best he can with story he’s been given. The writer, after all, must accept some responsibility.

  • A few things that bothered me about the film. The kids having sex and getting pregnant. They're 6.. They don't know what sex is yet. They don't know what those organs do. They can get horny all they want but they don't know what the actual act of sex is yet. "Mid-Sized Sedan" couldn't overpower the doctor? Really? sure he was stabbed, and he might have been caught off guard, but the dude was HUGE. You're going to tell me, that him knowing that his stab wound would heal instantly wouldn't motivate him to fight back? In one sentence they say "Hair and nails don't grow because their cells are dead!" and then in another scene we see a dead body decompose.. Which is it? Are dead cells affected or not? You can't have both. Either say that they don't and don't show a decomposing body, so say that they do and show everyone having to find ways to cut their hair and keep their nails trimmed. I understand that they wanted to say that bodies decompose, that way they wouldn't have to explain how they clean up the dead bodies. They just wait 15 hours and the bodies turn to dust. (Like we saw with the baby.) I also get that they didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with long hair and fingernails. But you can't strictly say "Dead cells aren't affected" and then show that dead cells ARE affected. The tumor growing inside the Mom would have killed her. The thing grew to a massive size. If wounds heal and cells divide rapidly, then that means that they would die just as rapidly. The tumor growing inside of her would have spread that cancer throughout her whole body and killed her in those few moments between her collapsing and them taking the tumor out. Yes, I know she did technically die, but then she came back to life again. Also, if you die on the beach because you stop breathing, or a tumor kills you, you're not coming back a few minutes later. The kids at the end even joke that they aged 3 days while they were having a moment together. If you're on the beach and you stop breathing for 3 minutes, that's the equivalent of you not breathing for 36.5 days. You're not just waking up from that. I know, you have to suspend your disbelief a bit. It's just a movie. But the movie very clearly establishes it's own rules, and then turns around and breaks them. If the movie can't even follow it's own rules, why should I be expected to believe them?

So glad I gave this a chance (I never listen to the status quo anyway), it kept me glued in from beginning to end with all the high anxiety driven moments. M. Knight is notorious for catering to an audience that wants something completely new and original. If you want your typical recycled plot this isn't your cup of tea. Go into it with an open mind and for those that are saying events were happening so quickly, missed the whole point of the affect on time the beach possessed, so face palm on that. And that ending, as crazy as it was I can totally see it being feasable if such a beach did exist. Anyway, I hope my 2 cents pushed some people to watch. Seriously I don't know why there was so much hate on this.

  • I love movies especially Mystery and Horror and overall Shyamalan does a good job telling a story because he never repeats himself. All of his movies are different and every time he comes up with a new concept, I can't wait to go see his movies. I think people need to go easy on him and give him little credit on what he's trying to do. Unlike some other films...they keep telling you the same story. I like the fact that Shyamalan is trying to tell you a new story.
