Those Cheetahs look more confused than anything. Usually when they attack their prey they go for the neck or throat to suffocate it. They were both looking at that robot like "Dude, this thing doesn't even have a head"
They also don't know when to chase. Is the back facing me? Or is that the front and it's simply backpedaling?! SORCERY!!!
That may actually be good for surveillance purposes, can’t hurt a robot, and no people have to go in and possibly be attacked so,

Or the smell. Maybe smell like any other machine, like oil or metal. Pretty weird to them
Good point!!
Yeah, must be pretty strange for a predator. Even for new prey in a new environment, they can assess them by sight or smell, but they have no idea on this one. Can’t tell if it’s back it’s turned or not, or where it’s vulnerable. It’s just basically an intimidation and assessment situation, but no return on investment on the intimidation factor so assessment is a ???

It's really fascinating that they don't react to it like they would do to any creature. They understand that something is unnatural about it.
They don't need to understand. Smell is enough for animals. When an inorganic thing starts walking, they will be scared of it.
That mf ain’t got no heart
nothing like that .. animals react with caution to what they dont know .. there is a video of a man laying down in front of a clan of lions and they didnt dare to attack .. because they dont know what to expect .. and the human himself does not show fear .
no smell, then confusion.
Doesn't have a fuking head lol
From the cheetah perspective, this would be the equivalent to a horror movie scene. A headless creature with jerky unpredictable movements invading your space.
Can't believe they've spent thousands of dollars to build that advanced robot using all the latest software and machinery but they don't have enough funds to film this without all the shaking and low resolution at times.
Exactly on point! Unbelievable.
It's simply a question of priorities. Money spent on filming what is basically just a stunt, is money that can't be spent on improving the robot. It's no different that flat-earthers whining about the lack of HD video of space-flight operations. "Sorry, but we have more important things to do with our budget than cater to low-IQ morons!"
LOL, the US made the robot. These are Australians using it. /facepalm
@@ParamariboCloser Wrong
@@Azubrael and those australians are living in the 90s? Haha
I believe the Cheetahs behaved like that because the robot gave no sign of fear whatsoever. Those animals are fine tuned into smelling and seeing reactions in their prey. They could even be able to smell hormonal changes. So if they see no fear response then that signals that the robot is stronger or more dangerous than them, which in turn makes them fear it. That's quite fascinating to observe. Makes me think the whole predator/prey interaction is such a dance. I also loved how at the beginning the 2 cheetahs passed walking as like they were dancing, they were sinched. Metal robot met flesh robots. Very cool!
It's instinct to react with fear/caution in unknown interactions with a strange creature. Best to retreat and avoid direct contact than potentially get hurt. Also why humans aren't ready for aliens lol.

cheetah acted exactly as a cheetah acts, the way this went down was reminiscent of a honey badger vs a big cat, but i think this was scarier for the cat as it doesn't have it within its Rolodex of instinct that an animal who stands up to them keeps moving its feet ,or maybe that was the part that calmed them down, as it might have signaled "i am standing up for myself but have no intent to harm you"
@@deejayimm I guess some people may find it weird.
Hahaha
There's something insanely poetic about this. Beast meets machine.
...and the machine isn't afraid. The beast is.
The thing missing here is cheetah language so they can get interviewed about their experience.
This is fascinating. One takeaway is that the Cheetahs were not sure how to react to it because they have never encountered a "creature" like it. Cats have strong hunting instincts and those traits are genetic. Even a cat never taught to hunt a mouse can do it. However, nothing like the robot has been passed along in their genetic dispositions and it's a true "data out of range" moment.
what a great comment - we look at all the comments to get more insight- but data out of range is a perfect term

I myself get uncanny valley vibes from the robot also. I think a lot of animals (humans included) are hardwired to be cautious of something that "isn't quite right" or just seems off. Even with my knowledge that this is a robot, that there is nothing wrong with it and there is nothing to be afraid of, there's still something inside of me that really doesn't like how unnatural the robot's movements are. Additionally, the robot doesn't act like prey, which is also throwing the Cheetah off. Just uncanny and strange all around.
Looks like at 3:07 - 3:10 the cheetah knocked it over. Not easy to see, but stop motion it seems like it
Yes, like they encontered any creature before. Hunting instincts my arse.
Almost nobody seems to consider that the cheetahs were simply smart enough ("evolutionarily-adapted enough") to not engage with a weird, chaotically-moving metal object. They may well realize at some level that it isn't another animal (or a really efdup animal), and they are appropriately cautious.

It's not about bravery, they're animals that live to either be killed or kill to survive. It's natural instincts to check it out and be cautious about anything they're unfamiliar about. If they just charge in at everything they find unfamiliar, their species wouldn't last till this day. Animals aren't that stupid.
I think Intelligence is not that required, nor that superior than other means of survival. Even with pretty much stupidly ruthless attitude, there are some ways to survive. As of now I can only think about one example (ratels, which have crazily thick skin to resist attacks), but there are many possible scenarios.

Got to love how they cut off the man who was explaining that cheetahs are very non-confrontational and likely wouldn't be a threat to anyone who accidentally got into their pen. You could easily scare off a cheetah. They get dogs and house cats as companions because of their anxiety.
I’m not a scientist, but I think you could have chosen a better environment to test the cheetah response WITHOUT the background noise of the children. I am positive it added to the stress the animals were experiencing while trying to interact with a foreign object. My suggestion would be to try again in an different environment.

Part of the problem is the robodog does, accidently project an attitude. That constant limb movement in another animal would signal high alertness, even intent to attack. And there is no signal of wariness, which the cheetahs interpret as high confidence on the part of the robot. I would think this is terribly stressful for them. It's mobile, hence it is 'living'. But it is not fearful or attempting to avoid aggression. That's terrifying. I would think the lions would surround and observe it, before just leaving it alone and moving away. If it followed the lion, being confident in the mass/ratio difference between them, might make a single strong slash with its claws before retreating.

Lazy cats, FIGHT! :(
As someone with no expertise but love for animals I'd agree is the same behavior you see in videos of honey badgers and wolverines were even tho the other animal is bigger the lack of response in a "prey" throws off the instinct of hunting and brings a more cautious behavior from the hunter.
Or the cats aren’t stupid and think they can eat something that clearly isn’t food😂 they can see with detail and color just like we can. They aren’t stupid by any means.
Cheetahs also have a much more limited diet than other cats. Put it in a leopards den and you’ll have a different reaction. Cheetahs won’t even eat a human
Im pretty sure they immediately identified the robot as “not food”. They were just not sure if it was sent from the future to terminate them.
Cheetah thinking "Why I can't find its neck to kill him"
Question. Would there be a difference if they were out in the wild crossing the 4-legged metal, i.e. in their natural habitat, not in captivity?
doubt it
The kids screaming certainly didn’t help the stressful situation. Having cheetahs defend their territory from something unfamiliar is fine and scratches that instinctual itch. However having the the children yell and observe at that time was halfwitted.
Actually, I'm sure they're used to the kids. NOT having them making noise would have been a change in their environment, thus invalidating the test. Remember, these are not wild savannah cats. They're in a zoo.
@@kmcd6140 Theyre not domesticated, theyre captured. They dont have a choice weather a bunch of kids scream at them or not. If this was truly for "science" they would have told the children to quite down. This was just for shits and gigs. Not really a test.
@@fight4ourright306 Nope, not domesticated. Never said they were. They live in a zoo. Probably born and raised. This is home. To remove the kids is a change to their environment. Whether you believe in the good work that zoos do is irrelevant. This is what they know. The handlers were there to ensure the cats didn't harm the device or themselves, and the pilot did their best to test reaction ranges. You can hear them talking about using the device to get an aggressive animal to back off w/o harm. The cats can't understand the kids. They hear yelling and honking, and whatever else all day, every day. If the kids weren't cheering for the cheetah to attack, it wouldn't be a normal day for them. Now, did the pilot show off for the camera? Maybe. That "sit up and beg" move at the end was pretty cute. The big tom seems to chill a bit at that point, too.

@@monahoedel1797 battery , jumper cables & metal plates/springs etc all connected for a nice electric cooker
The cats can't smell fear.
next experiment: flood the researchers home with AI robo cops, make a viral video from it.
Me: "children are the future" Also me: "STFU FFS"
Cheetah : "Man this dog is disgusting".
They were so scared 😂😂😂
It’s a roach actually lmao
@@adamornelas1986 😂 but funny 😂😂😂
Cat guy is like, “This robot better not hurt my cats.”
Makes me wonder if you should have attached some catnip to the robot 😂
The camera stabilization is really upto the standards of 2021 👍🏼

Not everyone have gimbal
I didn't even realize how horrible it was until you said that lol
Dude has Parkinson.
And the screaming children certainly added to the ambience. Exactly how I would have gone about filming a "TRUE WORLD 1st".
All i could admire was how healthy those cheetahs were. Kudos to the care takers of the zoo
no kudos there. they belong in African savannah, not in a zoo
They are FAT, hence unhealthy, probably due to lack of exercise and being fed inorganic foods. The African Cheetah is the FASTEST land animal in the world, averaging 80kph. I'm sure these cholesterol infested ones can hardly reach 30kph. Shame on you!
I agree with you Will, the zoo has gotten to be the only safe place they can live without being killed LIKE THE TIGERS THEY HAVE KILLED OF IN AFRICA AND ALMOST GONE EXTINCT NOW THANKS TO HUNTERS AND POACHERS!!!! So at least they are still alive, unlike the thousands and thousands that are being killed in the bush, shame on them!!!
@@patriciawilder66 there's never been tigers in Africa (outside of zoos of course.)
Will you be happy in a cage with excellent food
Can any tell me why the robodob keeps stamping its feet? Is that a stability thing or the way it is motorized?
Pretty amazing robot. It’s like a big spider lol.
Cheetah 1: "Quick Jimmy! Choke it out!!" Cheetah 2: "It's got no neck Raymond! It's got no neck" Cheetah 1: "That's cheating! - it's Cheater!"
British people would pronounce Cheater : Che-aer

Why did I read this in a British accent 🤭
Bravo. Bravo. Really comical 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Cheetah's:"No fear, no blood smell, don't know where to bit." Robot controller: "Don't bit my machine."
Indeed! No head, no eyes, unable to walk properly on uneven ground....
LOL
That's some great stimulation for the cheetahs! Zoo mammals, even zoo birds, really benefit from new experiences.
yeah, cats are cats. i'm sure it's a good stimulation and play for them. but they would probably eventually destroy their toy.
The thing here is that Cheetahs can not feel/smell the fear or any emotions from a Robodog cuz its a maschine, i think thats why they feel unsecure to approach and tear it apart.
More importantly, I think, they can't smell any steak.
How tf fear smell like..!? 😂😂 They can't smell any flesh and blood that's the reason
@@null2639shw animals fo smell fear, or extreme emotions and uneasiness caused by emotions, especially dogs. Tigers must smell it too but I just know about dogs. For example, if there’s a thief in group of people, dog will know which one is thief by smelling him and smelling his emotions causing uneasiness etc but trained dog ofc
animals cant smell fear lol thats a myth
they can only "smell" fear from members of the same species, but they can sense fear through things like body language
Cats live off their senses so Imagine how freaked out they are not being able to sense any fear hormones on the robot 😂
so if a human goes to the african savannah in a closed plastic suit, crawling frantically, do you think he'll be safe?
@@alerey4363 i think he would die of a heat stroke
So, in that case, wouldn't this be considered Cruelty to Animals?
