comicsforbeginners.com What are tangents? And why is it important for artists to be mindful of this geometrical term when they are drawing comics pages? I go over some random comics pages of mine to find tangents and cover some of the remedies and tactics for dealing with tangents in your composition. Check out comicsforbeginners.com for more tutorials and #makecomics tips!
Nobody ever taught me about tangents! I’ll keep them in mind from now on.
I can't unsee this now... I don't know whether to thank you or cry.
Both reactions would be appropriate!
Everything is tangents! Tangents everywhere! *draws sphere floating in an empty room*
3:45: "See how this line here..." I don't see anything "... goes straight up into the next picture." Now I cannot unsee it!!
Exactly!
This was a great video to learn about the different problems tangents can cause. It would have been better if you had switched between red highlight and no highlight: once seen, one will continue to see them even without the highlight. And it is in seeing them in the finished piece without the highlight that we finally understand the reason why we want to 'manage' them. As for tricks to deal with them, the video is, in my opinion, lacking. Less examples of tangents and a couple more practical examples of fixing them on an actual piece would have transmitted a more powerful message.
You know what, I agree with you!
I don't see a problem with tangents? Especially the examples shown.
Thank you
Interesting! Never thought of that. Sometimes when you drawed a shape, it helps imagine the shape beside and unconsciously you connect them? It might seems simple to keep in mind to overlap and cut the objects but isn't a different process that you can't really think at the moment you're are drawing?
I do think about tangents as I'm drawing. Otherwise there would be WAY more of them! This video is to demonstrate that even pro artists struggle to keep their art free of tangents. And it isn't necessarily a big deal, unless it's really distracting. It's just something to be mindful of if you want clearer graphic storytelling.
Well, you are thinking about perspectives, proportions, shapes, light sources; I don't see why you could not incorporate 'tangents' as another subconcious concept that you handle without even noticing.
i think you can do batman comics and can add DEPTH to that character with your artwork and storytelling skills.
Palle, you open for portfolio or artwork critique ?
Not at the moment, no. If you go sign up for the newsletter at comicsforbeginners.com you can stay updated on any upcoming opportunities like that. Thanks for asking!
but it gets hard broken by the panel space? some of these examples are a bit nit picky.
I'm only being nit picky for educational purposes. But you're right! And as I say in the video it's almost impossible to avoid tangents, you just need to be aware.
