The Ending Of Jordan Peele’s New Movie ‘Us,’ Explained

There’s a lot to unpack in the ending of “Us” - the second horror film from writer-director Jordan Peele, following his 2017 box-office hit “Get Out.” Here’s everything important that you might’ve missed at the end of the film - and our analysis of what the Big Twist really means. Be warned: There are some serious spoilers ahead.
“Us” puts a terrifying spin on the doppelgänger concept, and it’s full of social and political messaging in typical Peele-ian style. We break down the symbolism and hidden meanings, along with all the clever references Peele slipped into the film (what was with all those rabbits?). Plus, our explanation of how “Us” ties in to “Get Out.”
The cast of “Us” includes “Black Panther” co-stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke alongside Elisabeth Moss (“Handmaid’s Tale”) and Tim Heidecker (“Tim and Eric”). Nyong’o and Duke play Adelaide and Gabe Wilson, a married couple with two children (played by Shahadii Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). On a beach vacation in Santa Cruz, the four Wilsons find themselves under siege by a family of scissors-wielding invaders - who happen to look exactly like them. The night descends into chaos from there.
It’s all set to an unsettling soundtrack, which features a creepy reworking of Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It.” Other highlights include tracks from Janelle Monáe, The Beach Boys, and NWA.
“Us” is out in theaters now.

  • After watching the movie a second time sooo many things make sense now. 1) when they were at the beach with their children and the woman asked Adelaide what was wrong and she said she just has a hard time talking. 2)when the son went to use the bathroom and saw the man standing up with his arms stretched out to the side and blood dripping down his fingers. I figure that he killed his tether (the one they saw in the ambulance on their way to the beach), now he stands and stretches out his hands waiting for the others to join hands with him.

  • I like to think that when Red kidnapped Jason, she told him the truth: how Adelaide kidnapped her years ago, left her underground, and took her place above ground. But, and here's the kicker: she does not urge him to side with her, or turn against his mother (because like it or not, Adelaide gave birth to him, he's her son, even though she's "fake"). And in the end, even though Jason knows the truth, he does not outright reject Adelaide, and how could he? He connected with his doppleganger the most, and Pluto was the most interested in studying his double. And ultimately, even as an imposter, Adelaide was a fighter: she escaped from hell, built a family, and killed to keep it intact. Red also escaped, but despite having arguably stronger motivation, lost. So who would you expect Jason to side with? The "true" version of his mother that is a total stranger, threatened his family, and is now dead? Or the "false" version he's known all his life, has killed to keep him safe, and is alive? There's really not much choice. Putting that mask on a final time is a sign of acceptance, and homage to his dead "brother". And Adelaide would surely appreciate that, she could not bring herself to kill either of Red's kids. For a moment, I entertained the idea that maybe Pluto didn't actually die, and that Red kidnapped Jason to switch the boys off-screen. But I like the idea that Jason simply understands his mother better by the end, and accepts her, monster and all. If you think about how quickly the family was able to recover and fight back, some of that has to come from Adelaide, particularly how Zora goes from not knowing or caring where her brother is to beating anything that moves with a golf club to protect him. She sure didn't get that from her dad. And in a world where the Tethered are now above ground, the family is going to be fighting a lot. Best to have the mom that actually wins life and death battles on their side, in that case.

She was a real human she felt that pain for real while she probably was surrounded by thedered beings who had no consciousness and were controled by the ones from the above. She was all alone in that situation. Maybe she started to teach them by then but still I think they were still in that controlling state as it took a while untill they were ready to go up. She had to have interractions daily with those beings. That explains how she gradually began to act be like them.

It reminded me of a story that an inmate in a privately run jail in the US got given sugar packets from McDonald's spread on her cuts post surgery, because the jail didn't stock up on disinfectant and a nurse who was treating her "remembered" that sugar can kind of work as a disinfectant. This gave me pause at how inhumane the underclass and marginalised can be treated in the US, or anywhere, and we on top of the chain could live our whole lives pretending not to see their plight

Jason ( who’s Pluto now ) must’ve did the actual trick before the switch and his tethered been trying to do the trick ever since and never could Which is why Jason doesn’t know how the trick works ... he doesnt even know what it does The whole movie the family is seeing a new Jason all of a sudden that doesn’t know anything Doesn’t know how the magic trick works .. Doesn’t know where the bat is .. doesn’t know how to get out the closet .. Everyone is shocked at his language now .. Mom and son can’t snap on rhythm to the original i got 5 on it ( remember the tethered lacked soul underground ) Then remember Pluto snaps on beat while hes backing into the fire - while the movie version of ‘ I got 5 ‘ on it plays The movie version of i got 5 on it plays only during sons car fire scene and mom ballerina scene .

    • The reason why Pluto has the burnt faces because Jason was using a magic lighter which would never ignite but Pluto was using a real one causing him to burn his face

    • worthy4u you have to watch again. There never was a magic trick - he just couldn’t light a lighter cause he’s too slow . That’s the purpose of the snapping car scene. If tethered have no soul - how is Pluto snapping to the beat on the car fire scene ? How is Red and Pluto both able to do things they aren’t supposed to do ? They proved they have rhythm. That’s the whole purpose of the ballerina scene. While Ad was messing up her performance above ground - Red was slaying it down below that the tethered seen her as a God/Leader of the pack. Why Red and Pluto have their voices taken away from them ? We know normal tethered can’t speak English so why voices taken away Like done on purpose? Why is Red and Pluto sitting down like little kids during the living room scene ? She’s sitting Indian style - he’s sitting like a pet .. they have the mind of Kids - she even starts off her story with “ once upon a time “ Why do Red and Pluto get 1 on 1 talks/alone time with their counterparts INSIDE ? While Dad and Daughter counterparts are sent OUTSIDE to kill. Pluto and Jason even have their damn closet scene with Pluto showing him how to do it lol he’s just too slow to grasp it . How is Red and Pluto literally a beat AHEAD of their counterparts when it’s supposed to be the other way around lol ?? Daddy touches his glasses - tethered dad goes to touch his. Sister peaks thru car window n walk - tethered daughter then does the same . And so on ...

    • worthy4u if you watch again , Jason doesn’t even eat the meat at the table . He runs to get the lighter ( so he hasn’t even had the lighter on him ) - moms eating fruit . We see Jason eating later a bowl of cereal

    • Yeah that whistle at the end really broke my heart. It's like she was trying her best to reclaim what was rightfully hers. But the Fake One was more determined. 😔😔😔

  • For starters, I so want to blame the parents at the fairgrounds! The dad was wrong for being that intoxicated that he's not able to watch his daughter. And the mom already had a gut feeling that she should take Addy to the bathroom with her, whether Addy had to use or not! ALSO, I was weirded out how Jason knew something was up with his mom at the end....but I now realize Red could have easily enlightened him with the truth of what went down when she was younger. When the fake Addy rescued him from the locker, he was different THEN and didn't even hug her back smdh. I guess Jordan Peele is on one.... again! His mind, sheesh 🤦🏾‍♀️
