  • Not sure I believe that a repair shop was involved here, but... I've been doing something similar to the second part (heating a wire) fixing parts in my shop, but there is a cheap tool you can get (along with pre-bent metal "staples") that does the same thing. Then I cut plastic off a spar part and use a soldering gun with a flat tip to melt the plastic together. That trick DOES work GREAT! I've never tried baking soda and super glue, but the end results looks like what I used to get decades ago with a product called "Plas-T-Pair" - basically a plastic-like two part epoxy. I'll have to try that. The acetone and ABS trick.... not bad. I've done similar for repairs, but never thought to inject it through a syringe. I expected to come here mocking what I thought would be another BS "hack" video. I was pleasantly surprised :)

    • @@Munakas-wq3gpNot necessarily. Sometimes parts are not available. When they are, sometimes, the price is ridiculous. With the heat gun tool, though, it's no where near as labor intensive.

    • Yes, that's an hour of time to replace the mirror cover. They usually flat rate the first hour. However, I think this would only work if you were doing the work because they would charge you additional time that they have to do the sanding and stuff on a project like this.

  • The guy at the body shop is making lots of money because he's fixing the old parts now but still billing the insurance company for new parts. Not just bad drivers increase your insurance cost.

  • If you had put the tape over the hole first and then taped a thin bit of plastic sheet over that you would have saved yourself a lot of rubbing down after. I do it all the time with P40 fibreglass repair stuff and get excellent results ;)

  • Use polyester flexible filler, but either way the labor costs more than replacing a $22 cover
