Thank you very much!🙏👍💐
Excellent demo of drill making. This is very useful for making the larger drill bits from 25 mm and bigger because the expense of buying a drill bit, is far more than the time it takes to make one. Especially in South Africa where our currency is worth nothing. Doing this with a very high carbon steel would be succesful.
Excellent work. A couple things I will add for others who will try to do this- have suction on what you're doing on the lathe when you're grinding you do not want grinding dust or grit on your lathe. Grab the Finish bit close to the tip in aluminum soft jaws to chop off the knob with the grinder, you don't risk distorting it as much or marring the shank. You gave primary relief to it only when cutting the helix behind the cutting edge with the flat endmill, but you left it full diameter when you ground it to size. Ideally you would use a radius bit slightly offset axially to put a very shallow radial relief on that leading edge, only a tiny bit of relief will dramatically lower the heat in cutting, like 0.002" over that distance is enough so that only the very edge is actually touching your work. I would have also used an oven to do the tempering, much more exact results even in the house oven. Otherwise fantastic work I've seen very few people do this type of drill from scratch. You can also get around a lot of things if you slot the tip to take drill tip carbide inserts that you can swap out when they dull. I'm a prototype machinist and ex tool and die maker fwiw. Especially like how you stamped it and then finish ground it- cleaning the raised letters from stamping don't affect the concentricty of the shank. Great work 💪😎
Thank you so much for all the information you shared my friend and I'm so glad you enjoyed it🙏🙏🙏👍💐
The spirals coming out of the lathe drilling operation were something else - the biggest string snakes I've seen from any drill bit.
Do you think this is good or bad?
@@Mastermind- I don't like dull slow drill bits. So in that sense it is excellent. I suppose the drilled hole could possibly be a bit "micro wavy" from the large continuous burrs, if there is a downside. Personally I am very pleased with my metal drilling when I get burr snakes - it goes so quickly and requires so little pressure comparatively. It's just very pleasant compared to the alternative.
You’re out there making your own drill bits meanwhile I’m struggling like crazy to keep my store bought ones sharp… definitely need to put more time into learning how to sharpen drill bits
Congratulations 💐💐💐💐 To You. You have such great skills. I have nothing to say. Sir I don't even know how to sharpen a Drill Bit more or less make one. I have enjoy watching your videos. And I can't even start to know how you were making the Drill Bit. Again congratulations 🎉🎉 to you. You have a lot of practice And a lot of Hours under your Belt to have learned how to make one. Real Talk 101 !!!! Truth be told!!!!!
Thank you so much my friend🙏🙏🙏👍💐💐
Very good workmanship. I will endeavour to make a drill bit as well. Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome my dear friend
Bravo Meister!❤
Danke mein Freund🙏👍
What type of rod ( metal type ) you used ? What picth you used for the for the core ? . Good job !
tool steel(spk) and Thank you very much!🙏👍
@@Mastermind- what kind of tool steel?
Since it had an oil quench I imagine it was an 01 type oil quenching carbon vanidum chrome nickle phosphate buffered steel, silver steel. Remove the vanchromnickpho part and add in slicia, more and different acids and alloying elements... the Era of Steel is with us still in the current era.
Good video, but I have the same question about what steel was being used. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!🙏💐 tool steel(amutid S)
That's Excellent and a new skill for the toolbox....thank you for sharing. : ) Truly Skilled machinists are a rapidly declining part of society....you are Truly Skilled.
Thank you very much my friend🙏👍
What temperature did you temper it at? I didn't notice a thermometer. Beautiful work, the post grinder adds a whole new dimension to a common lathe.
Yes, thank you🙏💐
Masterful work, master! Bravo!
Thanks for the visit🙏👍
Muito bom muito obrigado!.
Awesome
🙏🙏💐
Great work hat's off my master You are genius.
Thank you so much 🙏🙏💐
Beautiful..... now show us how to make a reamer !!!!!! Keep up the great work !
Will do Thank you so much my friend🙏👍💐
Obrigado, meu amigo
I was curious what feed rate that you ground flutes it did not look like drill rod or highs End steel I will admit that I w as amazed at your work never have I seen heat applied in this matter before good job
Very, VERY, impressive.
Thank you very much!🙏🙏
Aí sim hein show gostei
Nicely done. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! 😊
Excellent Work thanks
So nice of you
Awesome !👍👏
Thank you so much!!👍🙏
Excellent job man, great video, keep'um coming..
Thanks, will do!🙏💐
Nice work. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week.
Awesome! Thank you!
Very Good
Thanks🙏🙏💐
Nice work !
Thanks for the visit

Nice job, amazing technique! How hard the drill bit? Grinding made a lot of bright sparks, which means could a bit more hardening.
Thanks, my friend🙏 If it hardens too much, it becomes a little more fragile, especially in the small diameters of the drills
@@Mastermind- yes, small drills will brake like glass. But above 10mm not really a problem if a bit harder. You should try freez treatment. Put in dry ice or liquid nitrogen and let cool down. Helps a lot from braking out chips.Call cryogenic threatment.
Excellent.. after this you can make the drill bit smaller, size 1mm or less😁
Yes, you are right👍
that is amazing!
Thank you so much my friend🙏👍💐
You are so good👍
Thank you very much and Glad you like them!🙏🙏👍💐
Excellent job.
Thank you very much!🙏🙏👍💐
@@Mastermind- Your welcome my friend ! Well deserved !
So great 😊👍
Thanks for the visit
Good job.
Many many thanks
Good job. taper drills for my tail stock I think
Good call!
Simply Amazing , Great Job ! , What Material Did You Use For The Blank ?
Thank you! Cheers! Which do you say?
Really nice.
Thanks for listening🙏
very nice job.
Thanks for the visit👍🙏💐
If you have a tailstock chuck, the grooves can be machined more efficiently with a hand grinder.
Excellent
Thank you so much
Good job are you using a cnc lathe or manual lathe
thanks my friend
Excelente
thanks my friend🙏🙏🙏💐
good job
Thanks🙏👍💐
Impressive, But I am wondering. Is there a reason that a gundrill wouldn't of worked for you?
Nailed it! Or drilled it!
What do you think, my friend?
just an question, how do you manage to obtain 180°for the second spiral ? i'm wondering to make an double thread axle for an Minerva steering house
Based on the spiral pitch, move it half a step (for 180 degrees) on the horizontal axis
@@Mastermind- that's logic but for aan steering axle you must have an nut and an spiral realy fitting and smooth passing, up and down, so it must be exact, maybe there is an 'lathes engeneerings trick ' for that ?
This is cool, but does the time it took to make this outweigh the cost of just buying a drill?
Amotid_S
Çok güzel bir iş bravo.
Teşekkürler arkadaşım👍🙏
👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝
🙏🙏👍
Gracias
De nada🙏🙏🙏❤️💐
Yeah I may do the same but with what I think is far easier spotting drills - they are hard to get and center drills are not good at making good starting point for drills - they are for lathe centers.
Was it hss or over grade of steel?
spk
How did you index the second flute on the lathe?
Axial moved by half a step of the helix...
What kind of metal is that drill bit?
tool steel my friend
👍👍👍

Which country is this please?
good

Thanks
is there any practical reason for making a standard 10mm drill bit?
just because
🙂👍🌲🤝
🙏🙏👍💐
As a machinist I am impressed by the skill this took but, I'm also confused as to why this is necessary. A custom drill I guess. Watched the video all the way through and I don't understand why someone with this much skill has to make a 10mm drill?
I suppose sometimes you need to use non standard drill sizes and thats when you have to make your own.
Absolutely right, my good friend👍👍😉
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
thanks my friend🙏🙏🙏👍💐
why do this ? 9:12
Hardening and tempering
what did you do to the lathe so it has such a fast feed rate? btw, you overheat the drill when austenizing way too much for best results (at least it gets white in the vid).
That's what I thought metric 4 is mines fastest
Very nice and high quality but you know a 10mm drill bit only cost a few bucks right?
My goal in doing this was to be able to do it and how to do it, my friend
@@Mastermind- respect!
