  • MGR:R is so great both ironically AND unironically. This particular kind of edginess is endearingly unique to the early 2000s, but the statements it makes about war will be relevant for all time. That, and the appeal of rock music playing as cyborg ninjas fight each other will never fade.

  • I like how all of the boss tracks lyrically fit with the bosses themselves, and Raiden in some cases even. Rules of Nature: Lyrics are about a predator striving to survive, which parallels with the animalistic nature of the UG Ray and inhumanity of the UG transformable tanks we fight throughout the game. I'm My Own Master Now: It's about Wolf wanting to be free. If he's to take orders from anyone, it's whoever he chooses to take orders from. A Stranger I Remain: Lyrics are about how Mistral accepted who she believed herself to be: a stranger who is good at killing, and the cause that Armstrong convinced her to fight for only strengthened her belief. Stains of Time: Aside from the overall theme about rain, this track also correlates with Monsoon's belief of memes always standing the test of time, and that even after his death, the meme he believed in will still continue to pass on through society, like a stain on time. Red Sun: This one is a bit trickier, but I believe it talks about how war changes the environment, which is fitting for Sundowner as he's a war fanatic that wants to keep the war economy going. On top of that, he is an opportunist who bides his time for the right moment, and believes that war and conflict is a part of human nature. The Only Thing I Know For Real: This could double as a reflection for both Raiden and Sam, for different reasons. Raiden no longer knows who he truly is. He's conflicted between being Raiden or Jack thee Ripper. The trauma he experienced in Liberia fucked him up as a kid, turned him into a killer, and he's only fighting because he doesn't want other kids to end up like him. Sam was trained to be a warrior ever since he was a child, and he became a PMC to lean into that drive for conflict even more. He knows who he is, but he doesn't know what cause he's fighting for other than his own, which is to be a fighter. When they both fight each other in the end, they don't know why they're fighting, other than the fact that they want to kill each other, and they've no idea who will come out on top, but they both know what will happen afterwards. Collective Consciousness: The lyrics of this song correlates with what Armstrong believes the system to be, as well as the façade he puts on so he can seem like he's a part of that system, when in truth he's fighting against it just like Raiden is. It can also represent what Raiden believes Armstrong is about, which leans even more into the façade that's hiding his true intentions and motives. It's very ironic, in a sense. It Has To Be This: Like Sam's fight theme, this one also reflects both Raiden and the one he's fighting. They're both one in the same, Raiden and Armstrong. They both want to crush the system for different reasons, and have different goals to do so. However, because these goals contradict one another, they're both forced to fight to the death because of it... which they both know they have to do. In the end. Whoever comes out on top will decide the future, and whoever falls will pay for that future with their blood.

    @snazzyjovialwyrm3314@snazzyjovialwyrm33142 жыл бұрын
    • It has to be this way is actually relating to Sam. Raiden picks up his sword for the fight (which is when the vocals start playing) and when it gets knocked out of your hand, the vocals stop. Its the realization that him and Sam are almost the same, "You *were* just like me" is the key line, the song is about Sam.

      @motokuchoma@motokuchoma2 жыл бұрын
    • I think Red Sun is actually the simplest of the bunch, and only works if you don't read too much into it. I saw Sundowner described elsewhere on the internet as someone who was completely, 100% up front with what he wanted the entire game; he didn't reveal that he secretly wanted war for this reason or the other, he just loves war and murder. His theme reflects that: the final ballad of a beast who knows only to fight, and revels in his bloodshed.

      @controlcore1@controlcore12 жыл бұрын
    • For Monsoon, I believe that alongside the meme observation, it heavily ties into his personal beliefs of "kill or be killed" and his life growing up in Phnom Penh. Him trying to wash away his past, let go of his anger and find inner peace, only to ultimately sink deeper in the "mud", aka his emotions and thereby his rather black or white view of life itself, which in it of itself is a byproduct of his life up to that point.

      @jamfilledjars@jamfilledjars2 жыл бұрын
    • If you look at Red Sun's lyrics from Sundowner's perspective, you'll see that he's just lusting for war and nothing more

      @colindaman4143@colindaman41432 жыл бұрын
    • @@motokuchoma The point about the sword makes a lot of sense but I don't think any of the other lyrics apply to Sam. Like right after "I realize you were just like me" is, "trying to make history." which Sam wasn't really doing. The whole point of "The only thing I know for real" is that Sam doesn't have a reason for fighting but has devoted himself to it so much that he's nothing without it. That's not trying to make history like Armstrong who wants to destroy and rebuild America. Then this one, "I've curved my own path, you've followed your wrath;" Armstrong directly says to Raiden "You carved your own path". Armstrong being the one to say that, and also being much angrier than Sam makes that apply more to him. Armstrong has an angry rant with lines like "fuck all these limp dick lawyers and chicken shit bureaucrats". Sounds pretty wrathful compared to Sam. Most of the rest of the song is about broader ideas and the conflict as a whole. A conflict caused by Armstrong, not Sam. So I don't really see any way that the rest of the song could be about Sam. Even though it would make a lot of sense about Sam's sword being knocked out of Raiden's hands. I think that could maybe be just indicating the song is mainly about Raiden. Just like how Sam's lyrics stop when his sword is knocked out of his hand, Raiden's lyrics stop when Sam's sword is knocked out of his hands.

    • I think that's just it. Metal Gear Regenance *really* isn't like any of the other Metal Gear games and is tilting into full mecha, ZOE territory. If you are into great action games; this mightn't be the longest or necessarily the deepest slashing game; but non the less it's an incredible experience, a true example of music amplifying the game play that we only really saw again in DOOM 2016.

    • @@maxwllcool I respectfully disagree, but I also understand it's really just a matter of preference then factual. The Doom music really has an ebb and flow that matches the action going on pretty much seamlessly. If everything is calm then the music is just ambient tracks, but as the action scales up the music cycles in tracks seamlessly to match the tempo without just throwing more music over the top, and will wind down just as quickly. It really is an experience that is a surprisingly well-calibrated experience that responds in real-time to gameplay. Naturally though just an opinion; I like both, the former being a feel-good rock concert and the latter basically being a jugganaught and is more about conveying urgency and power. I wouldn't want either one of those soundtracks in either other game.

    • I hate to be that guy that revives month old topics but Sam's body was just a exoskeleton with a cybernetic arm to keep up with the advancing technology of the modern days just like how he converted his sword into a High-Frequency Sword which allowed him to take on the likes of enemies like Metal Gear RAY. The thing is Sam could have killed Armstrong if he lasted longer and found the weakness to Armstrong's nanomachines in their fight but his body was too vulnerable and ultimately his arm got cut off whereas Raiden had his entire body converted into a cyborg which granted him advantages even greater then a exoskeleton would have done and I believe its this sheer strength of Raiden's body that let him survive long enough to kill Armstrong because should he be Sams' place with only a exoskeleton and a human body I'm pretty sure Raiden would have lost and much sooner then Sam did. Simply put Sam made up for the durability and strength of Raiden's cyborg body through sheer skill of taught techniques and his High Frequency Blade where Raiden brute forced his way through his encounters since unlike Sam he didn't need to account for having a human body and the damage a single slice of a HR Blade could do to him. If Sam had a particularly advanced exoskeleton that exceeded the one he currently wore I believe he could have killed Armstrong in his first encounter and do so with much less augmentation then Raiden. I would also like to point out even though its not gameplay related Sam's quickdraw technique (The one he used to cut off Raiden's arm on the train) is done with him gripping the hilt as it explodes out of the sheath then guiding the blade like Zandatsu slightly to get the slice he wants on the target and he always did this with his human arm prior to Desperado replacing it with a cyborg arm. Think about how taxing on Sam it is to constantly be performing explosive quickdraw attacks with a human arm while he fights things like Cyborg Wolves with AI, Metal Gear RAY, and Armstrong then adjusting his fighting style when he suddenly has a cyborg arm.

When playing against the Bastion say "what does an AI know about freedom?". Also, when playing against Torbjörn say "This is what happens when you bring a tool to a swordfight!"..."Lucky Devil" if he escapes or kills you. If Mercy is healing you say "I'm fucking invincible!". Have another person say "Raiden, Raiden buddy answer me, Raideeeeeen!" every time you die. When you are about to lose, with russian a accent "Why would I surrender? We are exactly where I want! Built with Russia money, to make Russia money!" When you lose say "not again!" or "wind blows, rain falls...the strong..prey...on the weak...all..is as it should...be...". Optional, when playing against Hanzo say "Liquid!" using Snakes voice. TL;DR version, when playing answer some questions with "Nanomachines, son".

  • I don't get the Raiden vs Snake arguments. They're on way different levels for a variety of reasons (one's a cyborg one's not, one's in a fucking Platinum "Let's make as many 13 year olds say "that was fucking rad" as possible" Games game, one's primarily a swordsman when the other is primarily a gunner, etc). Their personalities are barely comparable, too. Personally, I don't even care about the argument since I've only played MGR, not MGS. And either way, my favorite characters were Blade Wolf and Armstrong (Not that I'm saying either could beat Snake; Wolf would get wrecked, but idk enough about snake to say for armstrong).
