    • When you kick from the field during play it's called a drop kick and equals 3 points. When you score a try (similar to a touchdown) you get 5 points and a conversion, which is where they kick to posts from a tee which if it goes between the posts above the bar, it's an extra 2 points.. (So 7 points for a try and successful conversion kick.. You can only pass the ball backwards in rugby, if it's passed forward, the other team get a penalty.. You can kick the ball forward, but if you unintentionally make contact with your foot (not an intentional kick), then the other team get the ball..

    • Cool vid. Apropos sizes: I hoped you watched South Africa’s last pool-stage match against Tonga. The Tongan captain, tighthead prop (that’s #3) Ben Tameifuna, tips the scales at an NFL interior lineman’s 150 kg (= 330 pounds). And he scored a try, too! But @biggeststeppa1 is totally correct in that even the big boys of rugby generally are smaller than NFL linemen. But it’s a game that has a place for all sizes. Little guys like Faf de Klerk (5’8”) or Aaron Smith (5’7”) of New Zealand are often scrumhalves, and other smaller, speedy guys like Cheslin Kolbe (5’7”) play on the wing. (Kolbe also plays fullback because he has the hops to handle receiving high kicks and has a big kick of his own.) Tall guys like Springboks Eben Etzebeth (6’8”), Marvin Orie (6’7”) and RG Snyman (6’9”) could be an NBA frontcourt and tend to be locks, or second-row forwards (#s 4 & 5).

  • 6:04 It's called a scrum. It's contested by the big boys, 1-8.Basically both teams are jostling for ground and the ball. They can push your opponents backwards and no one is allowed to tackle you until the ball is out of the scrum. So it's a show of strength. 8:10 In rugby you can only pass the ball backwards. A "forward pass" is a foul, you can only kick it forward.

A try is 5 points, in line with where you scored a try when the kicking tee is placed at any distance from the goal line. On a penalty kick you get a chance to kick from when the penalty was rewarded, You can take space backwards for a better angle at the kicking post, but not forward or closer to the Opp goal line

  • What you revered to as a field goal at about 11:35 is called a drop goal attempt, which gives you 3 points if successful. It is a successful way to get more points on the scoreboard and wins games when you struggle to break through the opponents defense to score a try. We won the 1995 World Cup with almost just drop goal attempts, scored by Joel Stansky! It was epic!

  • As an Aussie who grew up playing and watching rugby, but who has been following the NFL now for a number of years, I'd say your observations are largely correct. In general, NFL players are probably more skillful, but very specialised. You cannot take a linesman and make them a wide receiver etc .. each player has a very specific role. In rugby, players have positions and general roles, but everyone has to multitask. Another key point is that although a team may substitute a few players at certain times, in general the whole team stays on the field for the whole match, and if you leave the game you cannot come back again. Also the game does not stop unless the ball goes out, points are scored or there is an infraction of the rules. Thus the players have to be fit enough to be able to run 80 minutes without stopping often. Rugby and NFL both great games, but NFL is more tactical chess, running set pieces and being advised from the coaches on what to do, rugby players make it all up as they go along. I love both codes for their different skills and styles.

    • NFL is 3d chess. Rugby is 4d chess. You have to be skillful, tactical, spacially aware, hard, fast, strong, adjile, tough, calculated to be a NFL player when you get a play. With rugby every player has to have most of that while using critical thinking skills while being live in the action. No stops to discuss plays just fast decisionmaking and intuition of reading flow not only in the players but the environment (stadium), the weather and the equipment all while being the team managwr live in play also. Yes there is coaching staff and the give instruction to players during the game but 80% of the decisions are made by the players on the field in the moment. Both are great games though and I've been an Eagles fan in South Africa since my pre-teens.

  • South Africa has won 3 world cups thus far, tied with New Zealand for the most world cups in the world. However, South Africa is the most successful World Rugby Cup team, since the Bokke have only participated in 7 of the 9 World Cups, but won 3 of them, whereas the All Blacks(New Zealand) have played all 9 World Cups and won 3, which mean SA has a 43% win rate and the ABs a 33% win rate. If we win the Currently ongoing world cup, South Africa will have participated in 8 World Cups and won 4 of them, giving us a 50% Win Rate Edit: Also, there are a variety of Rugby clubs and the like in South Africa, you can just basically google a local one and join one when y'all move to SA

There plenty of tribute reels for both of them and other individual Springbok players as well like Eben Ethsebeth, Lukhanyo Am, Faf se Klerk and others. Another one to watch out for is Makazole Mapimpi's tough climb to reach this level of the game from rural beginnings to the most inspirational number 11 and prolific scorer. There's is also a good little British video lots of guys have reacted to about the rules of rugby that will give you the fundamentals of the game. I am sure wherever you guys settle, you will find a social rugby club that will be happy to give you a shot at the game

  • Well done! The first basic rules are much defined by. A) what is called the offside line rule. ( not to cross depending if you are part of a scrum or lineout) and b) the fact that you can never pass forward! C ) a score("try") is 5 points and 2 bonus point if you kick it over aferwards. ( hence trying to score close to poles). A penalty can be kicked to rhe poles and that is worth 3 points.. Penalties are in most cases given when you unlawfully cross the offside line or holding on to a ball that you should have released when tackled...there are a number of rules that makes the game very interesting. Just for your information. Each team have 15 players with 8 substitutes. Of the 15 players 8 are forwards and 7 are backline players. There is on average 1.5 serious injuries per game ! And yes... people have died on the field before..but lately they enforce lawfull playing very strictly.

  • 5 points for a try. 2 points to convert (Kick over after the try) 3 points for kicking over for a penalty kicking from the tee. You can only pass the ball backwards or kick it forwards. Passing forwards means a scrum to the other team ( where the two teams push each other like you saw earlier in the video ) Here in South Africa rugby is more of a religion than a sport. Thanks for a very entertaining video.
