Overland Essentials at ...Harbor Freight?
Budget overland gear; Overlanding on a budget isn't as hard as you might think. I found tons of gear at even my local Harbor Freight. If you live somewhere where there aren't any overland or offroad shops nearby, maybe you can find the gear at your regular shops instead.
Obviously I would say try to buy local when you can but if you can't there always other options. This is just one part of a series of videos where I go to local shops and try to find budget offroad and overlanding gear.
Thanks for checking the video out! New videos coming! Subscribe for more!
Can you say "drugs are bad mmkay" in your next vid for me?
I live in Washington state and I don’t even shop at the off-road stores. Too expensive, Amazon and harbor freight are amazing. Thanks to your episodes.
Same. The overlanding tax is too high.

11:15 HEY! Read this! I was given a survival kit (presumably from Amazon) with tons of goodies in it. One of the things was a 3-in-1 knife: glass breaker, seatbelt cutter, and knife. Mr and a buddy wanted to test out the glass breaker and seatbelt cutter on some junk cars (at my work). The knife was sharp, but the seatbelt cutter didn’t work (the blade was straight instead of being mounted at an angle like in a letter opener). The glass breaker DID not work. Both of us wailed on a few different pieces of auto glass with no result. The only result we could actually get was the flattening out of the metal glass breaker tip itself. If you have any survival stuff, like this, go try it out somewhere (responsibly) before your life depends on it. That is all.
finally a realistic video about gear. Man, i hate those "build your survival kit" for wallmart videos... Nice job Sir
I can vouch for the rock lights. I bought them and installed them on the rear bumper of my Colorado. I use them to brighten things up when I am backing up and when parked at camp. Works good for the money.
Harbor Freight in an old Circuit City? I LOVE it. And keep up the good work.
My local harbor freight used to be a Chuck E Cheese lol.
Dont sleep on Ross and Marshalls, you can get chesp cheap stuff like tarps, ratchet straps, head lamp, axe, and pocket knives, and much more
I'm getting back into the overlanding thing. This video was very helpful. I have no plans on rock crawling. Just some backcountry adventures. Mostly doing some hiking and enjoying the experience.
Hey i wanna add to the fire extinguisher thing. Keep a fire extinguisher in your off-road vehicle regardless of if you intend to start a fire. You’re working your vehicle (typically) harder than the factory intended and that (along with other circumstances) could lead to a vehicle fire. Keep your fire extinguisher within your reach and always have an ABC rated extinguisher. That will extinguish combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.
I finally found the Badland Offroad jack in stock, and had to scoop it up. I’m in love with it, definitely worth the cost.
Yeah I might actually be going with that on my next build!
My favorite part of that Harbor Freight is how they just painted the front of the Circuit City building white.
Thanks for the research. I went and bought a bunch of stuff for my 4runner. Thanks again
If you are going to go the hammock route I’d recommend an underquilt. When using a normal sleeping bag in a hammock you compress the filling on your back and it doesn’t work well with the wind under you
Very helpful video for us newbies! Thanks!
(I work at harbor frieght) we also sell a 60 inch farm jack, it is just kept in the back. I prefer the longer length for using the jack as a makeshift winch, also for burying in the sand as a winch anchor.
Nice one. Good overview of affordable stuff
Thanks! Appreciate it
That $9 flashlight is rad, i work night shift and I bought a couple for work. They can take serious abuse in a weld shop. Great quality for the price.
Ive heard good things about the solar panels. Prolly my next purchase. Nice video as always ... 👍
The hitch d-ring from HF has worked great for me. Made me a good bit of money pulling out some big bushes.
I have the General toolbox top and bottom sections . They are about 3 years old now and have held up perfectly. Great quality item.
0:21 - HAH! Glad to see that local businesses have converted old Circuit City’s into something useful after CC’s store closures!! 🙌🏾
Phenomenal video dude. Plus your voice is soothing and not annoying!
I always pick up those free flash lights.. they come in handy…
They have a fantastic fold down canvas table as well. Light and takes no space.
The Apache boxes work great. Been using the 4800’s for years now. We use the road shock lights in all sizes and they are great however we are picky on lighting temperatures and stick to 6-6500k. The road shock cubes with the side lights are pretty yellow and are more like 5-5500k. Just fyi.
This is decent starter for people who are just getting into this. This ofc is not ideal but it is better then nothing. And inspect all gear before leaving. Learn what stitching is strongest for straps too. This the advice I have to give after a year of offroading
Excellent info!!! Thanks!
Thanks! Appreciate it
The winch is a life saver, we have put those things to the test and our only failure has been the the remotes. They don’t like being in puddles of water.
Awesome video - thanks!
Something you didn't mention was the air compressor that connects to your battery. I got one a few years ago and for the price it works great. Never had an issue with it in the handful of times I've used it
I don’t even off-road but came across this video, I recognize that harbor freight😂 in Lakewood across from the old sears, right?
I'm gonna have a hard time fitting all that stuff into my Suzuki Samurai, but I'll give it a try....
Not gonna lie, now having a runner after not having one in co I do appreciate how much option comes out of co.
I own that 4 1/2 lb axe. I'd unwrap and inspect the blade in the store because they are of varying quality and I would especially inspect the handle. It is a very heavy axe and will tire you out really quick if you are remotely out of shape or don't cut wood often. I honestly think it is more of a felling axe than a splitting axe but it will split some fairly large logs (18 inch long x 8+ inches) really easily in a single stroke so it's overkill for camping. The 2nd gordon knife looks a lot like a knife kershaw made back in the day called the breakout (I still own mine)
This is going to be a really random one, but can you do a Overland essentials at video for Murdochs?
I've got that hammock. Works well, you can tell the material quality isn't up to par with my ENO but what do you expect for 15 dollars? My only tripe with it is the tree straps have very few loops so you have limited adjustment. The ENO straps are far better and worth the cost. On the generator front, for camping. Pick up an Inverter Generator with an ECO mode. These are incredibly quiet and fuel efficient. They aren't much larger than some of the big battery banks. They produce more than enough power for a campsite. If I was going out for an extended time and given my experience trying to go straight solar, I would probably borrow or one break down and buy one and take it with me.
Those little blue lights are so much better than the red ones you reviewed. They have magnets and put out a much better light.
Don't sleep on the other 12k winch they offer. The newest model of it has almost the same specs and you can make it wireless also with a wireless module they sell there all for about $200 less than the badlands. I bought it on sale and swapped in 100 foot of high quality synthetic rope in it for less than $525.
Damn that’s solid. I’ll have to check that out.
Good video for sure !
The moving blankets are also handy.
The only problem I have with their moving blankets are they are not washable
i have the HF 3 1/2 ton floor jack havey as can be but slim enough to fit under ur rig when you need it
Thanks!
Yoo! Thanks so much! Very much appreciated! Sincerely
The badlands is made in the same factory as warn winches
I own the Cen-Tech power station. As portable power, it's not bad. The compressor is just…okay. As far as jump-starting goes, it's crap. Spend an extra 10 bucks and get a Halo Bolt.
That place looked nice, all the harbor freights by me look janky af, but I still love them.
Did your harbor freight used to be a circuit city? Haha, the building looks familiar.
I may have been. I’ve only lived here like 5-6 years. Very well could have been though.
Thought the exact same thing lol
Love the concept, overland on a budget. Not sure I would trust Harbor Freight shackles for snatching though.
Idk about the soft shackles but I have used their steel shackles for years now pulling big oak trees out of the woods with our dozer. They get the crap beat out of them and they hold up great.
Don’t forget HF has a pretty great lifetime warranty on most things. You bring the broken item in and swap it out. Done it with jump packs and they never gave me any guff
Felt you h8ghlighted a lot of stuff from Harbor Freight but there are cheaper / budget options from them too.
We love you oxfoot!! Much appreciated from Miami
Thanks! Means a lot to me for real. Hope you’re well!
That harbor freight used to be a Circuit city. That’s a universal exterior look lol
my issue before getting all these is a front and rear bumper and roof rack. i know people are upgrading all the time. trying to find where those people are a pain
Yeah I wish I could find a front and rear bumper at these stores for cheap. Likely not going to ever happen though lol.
@@OXFOOT even a swap shop of sorts where overland like enthusiasts could trade or sell off old good condition parts
man...stuff around here in denver is sooo expensive. i dont even try any more....
I actually liked your content, not to over whelming. Awesome job.
Thanks Really appreciate it!
I believe the $19.99 light is sold each.
The apex is made in the same place as the warn from what I have seen.
I knew last weekend I had forgotten to bring something when I was out camping. Now I know, forgot to bring tape measure to measure the distance between the trees to make sure my hammock will fit. Dang. 🤣
My intention was to make a dick measuring joke but I gave up on it and then forgot to cut that section.

Who’s Instagram did you recommend for the disease heater case?
Casestudybuilds on IG.
He built the one I’ll be using this winter.
*stumbles into comments* oOo, whats this magical place?! Gahhhh I want those headlights on my 2014 hahahaha, who makes those?
I got a video on it. It’s got links for it as well. Compared to other brands it’s really well priced.

What I got from this video is that Harbor Freight reached out and paid you to advertise for them.
Uhh what kind of pull do you think I have? Lmao. I’ve got 30K subs I’m not getting harbor freight paid deals… this is an entire series I’ve done with Home Depot, Walmart, tractor supply etc. to show people you don’t have to go buy the most expensive overland gear when you can find stuff in your town.
So what I got from this comment is you judged an entire series of videos on maybe.. what… maybe you think you watched 2-3 minutes of it?
that circuit city building tho
Where are you from originally?
Carolinas but I’m in Colorado
I’ve never heard anyone ever say, you can have to much light , that’s impossible, if you’re out in the middle of nowhere, trying to fix something ,
Would you have interest to test our owerwin LiFePO4 battery? If you are interested in,pls reply me
I will
Lol those lights weren't sold out. People were helping themselves to them.
We 100% Shop at the same Harbor Freight in Lakehood
Yeah that’s my local one. I live over in wheat ridge CO
@@OXFOOT We're practically next door neighbors. I'm at Colfax and Kipling
in 2023 why would you ever not buy a rechargeable flash light?
LOL that Harbor Freight looks like it used to be a Circuit City
It did haha. I was still living back east when circuit city was still around but people from here have told me.
I can't give this more than one thumb up, so here is a comment to improve your engagement metrics haha In all seriousness, there are a few items you showed that I didn't know Harbor Freight carries so I'll just have to make a trip to the store to see if I can get them locally :D
I appreciate it! Thanks. That being said it’s likely a lot of this stuff will be at yours but there will be some variation from different locations. Like if I went to one in florida it may have beach stuff that mine doesn’t. Fingers crossed yours is set up like the ones around me.

Think your little guy would enjoy paw coverings?
It's been a while since I edited this and forgot whats in it, did my dog make an appearance in this one? Trying to understand the reference.
Made me sad. Could tell that building used to be a circuit city lol
Knives. Stay away from all the knives at harbor freight (except the razor utility knife), the blades are low quality steel. They dull very quickly.
I would choose a Schrade knife as a budget brand. I carry Spyderco Salts these days, however, for $30ish… my 8 year old Schrade is still in great shape despite some paint wear.
The ChiCom folder shovel (aka E-tool) is junk. Blade and hinge joint material on US model is much thicker better made quality. It’s also crayon eater resistant…. ; )
Three quarter
What’s 3 quarter?
'how lucky you are,', "but actually,,, i dont support small business!" relatable but sad lol
I use local for all my truck parts and as much camping gear as I can. I try to actually use Colorado local truck parts for the most part.
If you weight 10lbs you might be able to store a tent on it lol
I like your video…BUT… you often mention buying these products as back ups. Buying a back up means extra cost, extra space, and extra weight. Instead of buying cheap products and carrying around all the extra weight and taking up all the extra space… i’ve always tried to buy a quality products that require not having to have backups. Buying a backup for things like a hatchet often seems unnecessary… but that’s just me.
I thought we were gonna see all this on your truck😢
What do you mean? You thought I was going to spend $2000 on a video?
@@OXFOOT no no. I wasn’t expecting you to buy the stuff. I just assumed that you already had the stuff on your truck. I wanted to see how it was set up on your truck. I have a 97T100SR54x4 and I was just trying to get an idea how it might look and function with the gear.
Anybody that talks sh*t about HF is the tacti-cool, mall ninja of the tool world.
Almost threw my phone when I saw the 29.99 sticker on that 12000lb winch
Not Bashing Harbor freight. But I have one I can Walk to and they don't EVER have 💩 in it !! It'll have 20 different kinds of Tarps and Power washers or Machetes. But never anything useful like this stuff
Synthetic and steel winch cables both have their places. Steel is best for places with lots of rocks, trees, or mud that will tear your synthetic line up. Synthetic is better everywhere else. I wheel in Vermont where our trails have lots of rocks, trees, and mud to tear up winch cables.
Tire pressure up to 250? I thought it only went up to 100%

Hang on hang on, all duct tape is not the same, cheap duct tape and good duct tape are two VERY different things
Yeah I clarify that a bit more in the part about the gorilla tape. Duct tape in general is about the same compared to some other tapes but comparing one duct tape to another is a huge difference.
@@OXFOOT I was talking more along the lines of the difference between the good regular duct tape that is a step below gorilla tape and the cheap type of duct tape which is more comparable to masking tape in my opinion, but fair point.
1800 is not that much light seriously,
Bottle jack is way better. 4 me
Bottle jack is nice if you don’t have a lift.when I lifted my 4Runner and tundra neither bottle jack worked on the truck unfortunately.
harbor freight was great when it was cheap Chinese junk, now it's expensive Chinese junk, same crap but now they think they're a special boutique store.
Yeah I feel like things have really gone up the last few years. I still like the store though, just not as cheap as it used to be.
I will never get this time back....
You took the time to write this comment, your time must not be very valuable
@@OXFOOT😂😂😂😂😂

Dude, you talk like Rainman.
No clue what that is
Think you forgot what you were doing in this video dude.
Nah, I did what I said was doing in the video. What did you think the video was supposed to be about? Seals in the Antarctic?
lol
Lol no. It just turned into a commercial for harbor freight. I was expecting more of "this is stuff I use that works well" not a "the box says" kind of thing. You started off strong, but were kind of reaching twards the end. I'm over at HF all the time, they have lots of good stuff peppered in with allot of garbage no one should bother with. So I always like to see their stuff reviewed and used IRL.
@@joelcastellanos7224 I mean if I could drop $10k at every store I did in these series I might do it. I don’t make that kind of money
Buy a damn REAL HI LIFT jack no knock off
Why? I’ve had knockoff for years
I have to say that anyone depending on Chinese made rigging (straps, slings, shackles, etc) may find themselves in deep trouble. My company and industry does not permit the use of anything but US made equipment for this.
Yeah I totally get that. Other than the ratchet straps I tried to stray away from anything that could fail and put someone in a bad situation. The racks I researched and people have backed the quality of them.
Yeah , what industry is that dude?
I've pulled out more Yeeps than I can count over the years.....using a HF winch and shackle. American made isn't always up to par dude. Besides, 90% of everything either has been made in China or has gone through it.
Still waiting on the industry that forbids the use of anything not made in the USA...... Stop posting your feelings
@@hellbillyBobas per OSHA, any rigging equipment has to be USA made. I'm a welder and it's like that
if you can't sleep, you did not work hard enough. my time in the service, any downtime, I was out cold.
I usually go camping to do nothing. On occasion I’ll bring my bike and ride but I mean I want to straight up be a bump on a log and relax. Winter camping I do end up sleeping so hard and fast though.
HF crap probably works fine. But for me the principle matters i hate buying china crap i rather spend 3x $ on american made.
Did he buy anything that he recommended? Not willing to watch the whole thing because i don't think he did. Of course its easier to talk the talk. Put the money down and show how it is!😢
Yes I bought everything I talked about here. I spent $7,000!
Turn off the background music. It is beyond me why KZhead content creators think playing background music over their voice is somehow enhancing their videos, it is not, it is distracting. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes extremely annoying and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.
Hey as far as jumper cables are concerned don’t use them on more modern vehicles! These jumper cables have a tendency of once the vehicle that needs the jump can send a feed back once the jumped vehicle has been started, this feed back charge can burn out fuse boxes and bus systems and if the vehicle that needs the jump is large enough the feed back can burn out the jumper vehicles ECM or BCM either way the jump box fully charged will never send a feed back charge! Best way to explain this is kinda silly to me but it shows the point. If you’ve ever watched the first Avengers movie just remember when Thor calls the lightening down to direct that charge at Iron Man but Thor wasn’t expecting Iron Man’s suit to absorb the charge then throw that charge right back at him! This is what can happen when using jumper cables. So please don’t use jumper cables on anything new enough to have a ODBII system or anything newer then 1996.
Apache cases go on sale often.
