Overland Essentials at ...Home Depot?
Budget overland gear; Overlanding on a budget isn't as hard as you might think. I found tons of gear at even my local Home Depot. If you live somewhere where there aren't any overland or offroad shops nearby, maybe you can find the gear at your regular shops instead.
Obviously I would say try to buy local when you can but if you can't there always other options. This is just one part of a series of videos where I go to local shops and try to find budget offroad and overlanding gear.
I have a video dropping 9/28 at the same time. Check it out! Supertramp Campers Flagship LT Walkthrough kzhead.info/sun/haeFZJykgXxunmw/bejne.html
Thanks for the info! So many KZhead Overlanders have all the most expensive stuff so it’s nice to see affordable alternatives.
I mean I’m guilty of getting expensive stuff too but most of that is just testing stuff out.
FYI WATCHERS Winch recommendation for all.....among Jeepers many are no longer buying WARN and instead are buying the Badlands Apex 12k lb synthetic which can be found at Harbor Freight. There is a side by side chart comparison and it outperforms WARN. OTHER channels highly recommend it as qelll. You are seeing it more and more everywhere on Jeeps! I saw your Harbor Freight Video as well. As I recall you mentioned that winch. You can grab it when they have the 1 item 20 or 25% off sale. Buy the warranty which is about $175 extra but a must have...others have told me and the Store Manager independently mentioned it without my even asking...you can bring it back in just before 2 yr ends and exchange for new replacement ZERO NO QUESTIONS ASKED. FYI for others watching. JEEPER HERE! NOT JUST TOYOTA OVERLANDERS WATCHING! 👍😁 Thx for all your great info. Pam
The red Husky totes with the clear lids are amazing! They keep water and dust out, and it’s easy to see what’s inside of them at a glance. They are surprisingly affordable for what you get too. They are stackable also!
I love the husky 25 gal rolling box it’s fully sealed fits a full camp stove, and comes with locks built in. Two of them side by side fit perfectly in a truck bed like decked. I have even used it to haul firewood on top
Nice, I’ve got some rolling boxes now that I’m sure we’re a lot more expensive but I like that rolling case style box.
As a user of the husky bins I would say that the ones with a clear too are nice. I have 3 that I use plus a small one for fry foods and spices, utensils, etc. it’s nice being able to kinda see what box is what and they have somewhat of a proof rubber seal. And the latches on them allow you to open a variety of ways. Also for the wise you can use duct tape as a fire starter. That glue burns well with the fibers.
The only thing I would add to all your pics. Would be a electric impact gun? I have one in my truck that goes to 2 thousand watt inverter Good for changing tires and taking off stubborn bolts
I’m considering making a tool list for off-roaders, might have to delve more into things like this.
@OXFOOT Yes, I'm just getting started on overlanding. I would really like to see a list of tools that I should be carrying. I feel like I've created a good kit but I always find there's something I've forgotten. I'd love some advice from those of you who have been doing this for a while. Thanks in advance!
The red Husky totes with the clear lids are where it's at.
Yeah I was so differing getting some for home use since I already have heavy duty ones for offroading.
Came here to almost say the same. I use the red tops but have sharpied what's in them on top. One tote has some basic recovery gear. The 2nd has bug spray sunblock, first aid, 2 MREs, a hammock, TP, ... the basic exploring stuff 😂
I have used the warranty on one of those exact little Coast lights that you showed off. It was probably the best warranty experience I have ever had. I emailed them, they asked for proof that I owned a light, and then they sent me a whole new light.
I do the same man, all these overland and outdoor brands are out of control on some of the prices, but they know people have money in this hobby. Most of my gear is from walmart/homedepot/amazon haha
Yeah I’m about 50/50 now just from KZhead but I started off being pretty much all big box retail shops.
Props for giving people the scoop on accessible gear!
Thank you random subscriber👋🏻
Lol
I built my setup out of plywood and rock a bunch of Milwaukee packout boxes myself! Jacks and jack stands also came from some hardware store.
THANK YOU SO MUCH/ ALL ARE GREAT CHOICES. GREAT FOR ANY BEGINNER.
GREAT VIDEO AND EDUCATION. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Dope list, just make sure you keep an eye on the fine print buying the bed rack, the higher end ones meant for rooftop tents and such usually take the time to list a normal capacity (static), but also a different capacity that is rated for bouncing around off-road (dynamic). It's like how straps and ropes have a rated strength, and then a WLL working load limit which is usually less than half of its rated strength.
I learned what tools would need by working on my own truck.I recommend it for anyone.
Same here. I have to occasionally take mine in with working two jobs now but I learned real quick manufacturers use just about the same 5 sizes of bolts across the truck.
I've had a Smokey Joe that I got from HD abt 20 years ago. I recently got a new 14" stainless grate for it, but it is perfect for camping. A little bulky, yeah, but toss a small bag of charcoal and a grate brush and you are g2g. It also doubles as a fire pit when you're done cooking. I think it is still around 50/75 bucks. I do highly recommend the aftermarket stainless grate, that I got at Grillvana. The grate that comes with it will rust over time.
This was so helpful!!!
@ 0:44 Lowes Kobalt brand has one and its better then Ryobi for areal lighting, has 3x 2in by 3in led lights all around, it stands 6ft tall and its warm white/sunlight light hue. I got 2 of them and lights up the campsite really well especially when you're trying to setup at night and also attracts all the bugs to the light away from your tent/camp site which is a plus. 8ah battery will last 12-18h.
I’ll have to check it out when I go to Lowe’s. I’m stuck in the royobi world because I got them when I was younger and when I moved in with my girlfriend she had them as well. Maybe one day we will upgrade though.
Practical thinking, good stuff
Thanks!
Nice video thanks!
This ought to be a good one!
Hope so! I’m more excited about the camper tour coming up but this one should be a good one.
Awesome series. You could easily go into 5 C’s of survival and tool kits. I almost bought a jeep then I saw a 392 wrangler and decided I could get a 6.4 v8 truck that gives me better towing options for a pop up or tear drop. Lord willing this power wagon deal comes through cause these prices!!!!
Yeah I ended up going with a tundra 5.7 after looking at the power wagon. Maybe one day but god dang those prices made me sweat. I will say I’m loving the V8 though.
I had no idea HD sold half of that stuff. Cool video
Yeah I think most of it isn’t seasonal. Tried to stick to stuff that was there year round.
Husky has a great heavy duty/ weather proof tote that i use & they have a couple different sizes
That coast flashlight only has 180lm with a 1.5v battery, you can only get the 410lm with the rechargeable one, which you have to buy separately.
Nice video. Thank you. A tool video would be awesome since you brought it up lol
Yeah I’m kinda planning one now. Haven’t really written anything down but I’ve got an idea of what it’ll be.
Nice!! Will be on the lookout
The husky composite axe and hatchet are a much better deal and just as strong. If you go to the tools section, you can get a easwing hatchet wich is much better than than either composite hatchet.
Nice video! It's refreshing to see people show you can use just basic/average tools to get the job done. Tired of seeing reviews for an 8 piece ratchet set or a tea kettle that retails for 300 bucks because it has "Overland" in the name 😁
HD has the milwaukee Packout system. If you spend $200 you get $50 off. 300 get 99 off. Great system.
The Black Totes with Yellow lids are great if you buy the ones Costco sells, the ones HD sells don't do as well in the heat.
Yeah Costco has some really great stuff. I haven’t tried the HD ones but I’ve seen them break from time to time.
I picked up a Ridgid tool box for 40ish at HD. I didn't need one with wheels but it has loads of space. What does the turbo mode do? I get that it's marketing B.S but I'm curious.
Turbo mode on which product? The fan?
And yeah the wheels aren’t always necessarily. I love them on mine but mine are also big knobby ones on a different brand one.
@@OXFOOT The flashlight lol
Totes are an excellent easy option, except for deep feeze weather. If your not careful, gentle, they will crack
Yeah that’s why I ended up going with ROM boxes. They are crazy expensive but since I sort of do this for a job now I might as well buy the ones that’ll last through the heavy winter season as well as offroading.
I built my own drawer system for my tacoma.
Weatherproof?
sealed it with flex seal everything stays dry.@@OXFOOT
I've bought a lot of these lights, always go with coast, I have had phenomenal luck and service from them, husky is good, coast is better
Any reason why you're going with the RECON over the RIDGE GRAPPLER?
I see this channel as an opportunity to try things out and report that information back. I’ve had the ridge grapplers and not the recons so just want to see if they are better or worse.
Got it, thanks. I'm in the market for new tires; Nitto's are on my short list. The Nitto Ridge Grapplers are on an even shorter list. Thought I'd check in with you since you've already run with them.
@@OXFOOTThanks for the video Jason. Have you considered the Falken Wild Peak tires? I see a lot of off roaders raving about how good they are.
@@HotRod-wv4vm I think for me the Falken wildpeaks at the size I'm going just don't look great. At a 285/70/17 they look fantastic but for some reason when I see them at 35 or 37" they just look a bit like they don't have enough tread. It's purely aesthetic and it's a taste thing but I know they are probably better on road and in rain and snow like where I live, but I'm a victim of my own superficial tendencies sometimes.
@@voodoo36x yeah they are great I'm sure you'll love them. They are probably a better tire than the recon grapplers but I'm willing to give it a try. Nitto has been the best tire brand for me personally so far.
9:26 these use to cost five-ish dollars
I still remember getting them for about $3 a bottle as recent as 2018
But man inflation is crazy
@@OXFOOT I would get these two packs for about five bucks at Walmart
Hey man Surprise surprise not just Toyota owners watching your channel. JEEPER HERE! Just found your channel and I am in the planning phase for Overlanding. Health has me down right now for quite a while. Thus I am taking in info from many sources. Overlander is an Overlander is an Overlander. Same desires regardless of our rigs.... get outdoors and LIVE! 😁 thanks for all the info! Taking notes on my phone! 👍🫵
You are so lucky buddy lol
Lol
@@OXFOOTalso I use duct tape to fix trains sometimes, that and heavy duty zip ties.
Toyota. Lol. This person in your audience jeeps it up haha . I like being in your minority haha
Yeah I need to make some Jeep content now and again. Jeep people I’ve interacted with on here have either been the nicest people ever or just like redneck hardass boomers.
@@OXFOOT 🤣 I feel like I land somewhere in between that
$330 fire pit is definitely at the top of my list for camping essentials.....lol. No wonder people get so annoyed with "overlanders"
Fun fact, I made the fire pit, and endorse it. You have to buy it, I’m not just pointing out its existence!
@@OXFOOT that's even worse
@@SlappMcSlappface you have to buy it slappy boy, sorry.
@@SlappMcSlappface I guess the more reasonable answer is that it’s a video showing what exists in the store no matter what the price is… but that doesn’t make sense, I’m obviously just trying to make you buy it.
lol, fair enough. I am just annoyed with the idea that in order to go camping you have to load up your grocery getter with all kinds of crap to bring all the convenience of home with you. It's gay. @@OXFOOT
Dude seriously. I just finished watching your video from harbor freight version of this video. Only question I have is this. Why show the duel jump box/air compressor if you don’t prefer them to dedicated single jump box and buying the portable air compressor as separate items? The duel setup with the jump box/air compressor system actually save space inside your rig! Unless you do what I prefer which is the duel ARB air locker for max traction but the two compressor setup also gives you the ability to air up tires but also gives you the ability to use air tools like impact guns air ratchets.
So I'm really just showing what you could get if you don't have a dedicated compressor like me and most avid overlanders have. I try to show more than one option when possible, but personally this isn't the route I would go since I have several high CFM compressors. Ideally you'd have a big jump started and the maxed out stats ARB dual, but if you're new or on a tight budget you could get one of those all in one units.
@OXFOOT yeah no I totally get that. You actually show several different versions of the same thing too. And I totally agree with you these are decent but not optimal options. But and the channel isn't mine, but if I had a channel I'd kinda push a lower tear version of the best option the onboard segregated jump box and onboard air system. But yeah I did catch that you showed not just 1 version you showed like 2 or 3 in each video. And those were what I went with when I started my overland journey. I have the dual ARB air compressor with the ability to use air tools and air my tires up as well. But it's like alot of channels that only do the bug out bag setups and only push life straws I ask them or simply suggest to them the sawyer mini water system over the life straw because they're both the same price but the sawyer mini filters further and alot more water then the life straw. It's pointless to suggest just the life straw only.
A couple extra bucks to get the lid for the HDX tote? Thanks for letting me know not to subscribe to your channel. And I will click away now.
Bye weirdo ✌🏻
