AI Gadgets and Why Siri Will Destroy Them All

AI gadgets like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 all capitalize on the one frustration of using a smart phone. It’s something we all experience and it seems like large-language models are the answer, but in the end, a vastly improved Siri coming later this year will destroy them all.

  • I agree with you the phone will win. But, honestly, Siri on the phone sucks compared to Google on the phone. I wish Apple put a lot more effort into Siri and improving its roughly 50% hit rate for doing what I ask it to do.

    • In June Apple will demo the new version of Siri. They've been working on it for years, will be orders of magnitude better. People are not paying attention to several items that foretell the future. An example is the latest SiP on watches are able to do a huge number of Siri tasks on the watch. It turns out that the watch is very often used by power Siri users. This is a huge advantage in privacy and rapid response times. It still will go out to the internet for items that require heavier processing, but off-loading if simple tasks makes the entire system much faster.

    • @@bruxi78230 Don't get me wrong I'm sure Siri is great but Google has been doing that for years. Just even more so with the Tensor G3. Some things they send out to the Tensor servers like video boost, and some things they do right on the device like voice dictation that they've had since the pixel 6 and AI processing on the device for years beyond that. Samsung is even claiming its LLM Gauss will have even more AI processing on its version of the 8 gen 3. Google Assistant is already at a level that surpasses Siri. Others being Assistant with Bard, Chat GPT 4 turbo, Copilot etc. surpass that. So they're right to say Apple needs to step up Siri. They need more data input to train Siri on without impacting privacy which Apple can do, but to catch up to the amount of data many AI chatbots are constantly being trained on and making Siri equally as good is going to be challenging.

  • I definitely agree, but my perspective is I'm willing to spend the $200 to get these capabilities now, even if they're imperfect. My iPhone having these capabilities could happen next month or 2 years from now. If they were selling it as a $1000 device, forget it. But for what looks like a premium device with potentially amazing capabilities, I'm all for it and I'm willing to support any company who's creating competition and innovating

    • @61108jay it's a called making a recognizable brand. This has nothing to do with the product being premium or not. this company is just scamming people out of $200 on a cheap device with outdated specs instead of designing an app because it doesn't wanna share profit with apple/Google. What's next ? it's dangerous because now companies will consider developing devices instead of apps if this succeeds which is extremely harmful for the environment to say least.

  • Regarding the rabbit r1, I slightly disagree with your take. I DO agree that as first gen device from a new startup, it will face a multitude of problems. That said, the device is demoing and paving the way for how we will interact with our devices in the coming years. Combining the interpretation of LLM's with the task automation of LAM's could finally allow everyone to have the smartest and most capable personal assistant in their pocket. There will be a need for devices to keep an on-screen keyboard functionality for times when speaking isn't the best option but I think speech will be the main way we interact with our devices in the coming years. I'll be interested to see Silicon Valley's version of what the rabbit is demoing.

      @mrlightwriter@mrlightwriter4 ай бұрын
    • But wouldn't that be Siri, with an LLM behind it? The phone would have a better camera than the rabbit, as well as a competitive microphone for input. I hear what you're sayin', though! I imagine that phone makers will implement their LLM's in their voice assistants in the near-term (on their "to do" lists). Apple has a frustrating history of releasing consumer desired features late in the game, but they eventually do. The strategic marketing play is likely to follow "..let's let the market heat up about LLM assistants, and how revolutionary they are, and how exciting AI is, etc, etc..." Then BAM iOS 20 - Siri is now an encrypted AI voice assistant... all in your iPhone or Watch." It also has the effect of allaying public ire with respect to monopolistic Apple/Samsung swooping in and destroying an innovative new market space immediately, but rather sweetening up the public to say "Hey!! Apple finally has added a feature that we've all wanted for sooooooooooo long... A really good AI version of Siri - Thanks Tim Apple!" err whatever... Markets tend to look better with diverse players and new ideas. If you're a megacompany like Apple, it may be better to see what great engineering/features are out there before determining a make/buy decision. In a sense these new players could viewed as commodities to tech giants... the Massimo situation is a poorly executed, but GREAT example of this type of strategic market play.

      @RS-mb6nn@RS-mb6nn3 ай бұрын
    • @@e.b.1279no it s not. The important aspect that is forgotten, is the LAM model. And that is pretty cool. I checked out an interview where the process was explained how LAMs are trained. You basically watch people use their phone to do all the things you would normally do and the video is then used to see where you tap on the screen, what you do etc. That’s how the model was apparently trained for a long time. And that is the reason why you won’t be able to get the same functionality with an iPhone or android phone yet. It might take a year or two before Apple and Google catch up to that. You can already check out the capabilities of these agent models but based on llms e.g. multion. So this definitely different even though the expectation on the surface is the same as if Siri would be a „real“ ai assistant.

    • Some of these “boutique” tech companies actually want to be gobbled up. They see a niche that the big boys aren’t addressing and jump in, come up with a neat solution snd then actively look to have their tech absorbed by the big guys for many millions of $. They may be happy with that and move on to a life of ease - or start work on the next boutique fix. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is of course not at great thing when the big boys charge mega bucks and din’t deliver value. I think Apple delivers great Value. I purchased my iPhone 11 Pro Max in Sept 2019 for $1,500 and amortized over 4.25 years it has only cost me $353 a year. It still works and always has worked perfectly and is still supported by Apple. I feel like that’s great value.

Also, I think Apple would let you pay a huge amount of money just for that new technology and a paid subscription for sure. Then Microsoft Copilot is very limited actually compared to ChatGPT. And we don't have to forget that Rabbit R1 is based on a LAM and not a LLM so it can't absolutely be compared to all the other "smart" assistant, it's another type of AI and it's surely more useful. Last thing is that in my opinion it would be nice to have a single type of AI Gadget because I don't even want to imagine how messy it would be if eveyone makes their own AI. • I don't think Apple would create a large action model for Siri as an R1 rabbit device because it defeats the purpose of a smartphone with an expensive touchscreen and an AppStore. If Apple implements that for Siri, people won't even click on any app because these action models give output directly to the user after actions are done in the background. Think about the implications for the app store and its developers, especially UI designers who are going to be pissed. So, Apple won't do it because it devalues the value of having a smartphone. The only issue with the Rabbit R1 is its lack of a high-quality display and quality camera. Since taking photos and viewing videos are the most common activities people use their smartphones for, especially for entertainment purposes, if they could integrate these features into the device, it would be a strong threat to apple.

It could listen to my meetings, take notes, summarize, pull out, action items…. That in and of itself could be indispensable. The learning ability also looks like it would be insanely invaluable when it comes to doing things, maybe like editing a video. It could watch me edit a video, and then teach itself how to do it for me and my style? or even if it just creates macros being able to watch and learn the clicks and save me time creating those. For $199, if it truly does those things, then shut up and take my money!!!!

Also if it can do these things it could also add circuits to an electrical design, produce the scamatics, make comments on a design and send the updated design out for reviews and approval. • You are severely overestimating what this LAM actually learns and can do. It learns through ovservation how you use a web application. As in it records what buttons you press, where you type text etc. The end result of this is basically a bot user for the website. That can repeat those exact same steps but replace the text with new ones. For instance if you learned it how to play a song, you could change the example song you used with a new one, and it would enter that text instead. It creates a macro that you activate with voice. So what could it realistically do for you in terms of video editing? Lets say you have a web based video editor, and you need to upload a video file, and convert it to a different format, then download the resulting video. Well this would reasonably be possible, just change the example video with a new on you provide. But learning how videos are edited in your style? It is not what this tech is meant to do. At best it could replicate all the exact edits you make to one video, and then do those exact edits again on another, but that is not how editing videos works sadly.

  • I agree generally but you must consider this is the first model of the Rabbit device, (remember the first iPhone) who says in a near future it cannot also download the parking app in situ? In the end it's about being a bridge and act as your fingers via voice. For an extremely lazy person like me, this is amazing. Also, for older people, who don't know how to do certain things with their phones, and at that price, I think it can be a great present. My questions would be how much more than Siri it can really do at the present moment. I watched some videos and I kept asking myself: Ok, but can I tell him to go to do more specific things? Can I tell him to go to my mail and erase all emails from a specific sender. Or can I text the uber driver and get their responses? Or make a playlist for a party with my suggestions and it playing a bit of its suggestions based on mine? I guess the question would be: How close to the AI in HER, the movie, is this? Because that is where we are going ultimately. And in that sense, the teaching mode is very interesting. As a gadget freak, I'm really fascinated to see it's already happening. I've been wondering for years how come Siri hasn't evolved at all in so many years. Apple should have led this path. Either they've been lazy or they are doing it secretly and don't wanna release it until it's WOW. But remember it's Apple, so it might come with silly restrictions and subscriptions.

Unfortunately its got limitations such as not being able to sync up with a calendar or set an alarm, but otherwise is extremely helpful in helping me manage my schedule and to-do lists. I think Rabbit is going to surprise everyone. Its not a phone replacement, its an EXTENSION. It'll have some bugs and some trial and error for sure, but its going to ultimately be something that has useful application....I can easily see using it as an aid to music creation and also for work generating reports and large datasets. All I want is an accurate and CURRENT (not old ass ChatGPT from 2020) AI assistant that i can use to make my workflow easier, more organized and more structured. Rabbit checks those boxes. • Back in 1995, Apple introduced a Mac that could take voice directions. I was one of several in the office that was given this new machines. A coworker was showing off the voice control to management. At one point, I stuck my head in the room said, "Computer Shut Down." At which point the Mac did as I requested and said "Okay!", then shut down. The voice controls have been 'decent' for nearly 3 decades, but they haven't caught on. It's socially awkward in a group setting like an office to talk to the computer. It's better manners to silently type or click the request. This is my opinion, but it feels like the 'flaw' is using voice. Today I saw someone on the street yelling, like she was yelling at another person. I hope she was on the hands-free phone, but it was very much bizarre to watch. A day earlier, a car rolled up next me, rolled their window and started talked. There was no one else in the car. The light turned green and she drove away. Up to that moment, I thought she was asking me a question.

Apple's ANE is getting really good, and instead of building up their servers or renting AI Inferencing from a third party, their devices will be capable of doing most of the light and medium inferencing. The LAM in Siri doesn't seem all that great, and with the apple watch you still have to download individual apps and open them, the point of the r1 is so you don't have to download so many apps. R1 also has price advantage, of Siri updates to an LAM your phone will cost as much as a computer, just buy a computer then.

The point of a phone now is to communicate via talk, text, and video, consume media, read, write, dictate, navigate, process, etc, etc. The R1 is a toy with limited functions baked right in to the product. The smart phone can AND WILL be as good or better than any device meant to limit you under the guise of "cool and futuristic" AI that promises the user they will be better off. • Too much of an apple fanboi for my liking tbh. Apple should be pushing the envelope not chasing the pack, also i think your misunderstanding the LAM, the idea from what i took was that it was like a library of interactions with the apps that are available. so as the LAM grows it includes ways to interact with apps you may not already have. I think the goal in the end it to be able to ask for something to happen and the LAM would be able to say use your Google account to sign up to an app that you need and use it for you, so if you went to a country that doesn't use Uber, it could automatically download and sign up to a local cab app then order you a cab. Same request by you, same outcome, but Rabbit did all the leg work. (Long term thinking)

Ordering a pizza from Dominos? He told it the size and while it proceeded with the size, it used the default options to finalize. It didn't know enough to ask if the user wanted to change anything or even ask if maybe they'd like to explore the options. If you have to include specifics, it's literally no better then Siri. This thing is supposed to release in about 2 months and its seemingly no more powerful than a traditional voice assistant.

AI holds so much promise. Everyone talks about how great it would be to ask it educational type questions. What I really want is for the settings app to be redundant. ‘Hey Siri… stop all notifications from Etsy.’ Or… ‘Reset the wifi’ ‘Enlarge the font’ ‘Clear browser history’ Basic stuff like this is what trips up the average user. How do I do that? Becomes, just do it. Essentially Siri needs to evolve to a point where my mom isn’t mystified by why her device is no longer working. She can just ask it. That’s the real promise of an AI assistant.
