'It hasn't worked': Shanahan, Treliving keeping all options open regarding Leafs' Core 4

There has been a lot of criticism towards the Core 4 players on the Maple Leafs and their inability to lift the team to the next level. Team president Brendan Shanahan spoke about why it hasn't worked out while general manager Brad Treliving said the team will assess everything but will not make an emotional decision.

  • This whole press conference was a waste of time. Nothing meaningful was said. Everyone knows what the problem is and the leadership group just won't admit it. Too much money tied up in too few players and frankly that wrong kind of players, meaning players that aren't built for the playoff (read Marner, Nylander and Matthews and to some extent Reilly). Management is to blame for that. You just can't build a team that can compete for the Cup when you don't have enough money left to fill out the team with quality players because you can't pay enough to get good players to fill out the team. They have changed everything, but the core 4 or 5 so that is clearly the problem. Shanny will never admit it that he did it wrong. I don't why they keep talking about new information; the informaion has been that same fore the last 4 or 5 years. I think they are just slow .....

  • The organization hired Shanahan in the role as president with no previous experience as a NHL team president. He also had no experience as a NHL general manager or assistant general, same with the AHL, OHL, WHL, QJHL. Just to remind, this is the Toronto Maple Leafs, likely the most important team in the game of hockey - anywhere - and not the place for personnel experiments at the highest levels. So why is anyone surprised the then- rookie president could never catch on and a decade later with a decimated system is still unable to win playoff series?

  • What i do not understand is why fans fill the seats in that arena and they continue to see the same result come playoff time. Spending an arm and a leg on tickets to watch a team that is boring and not exciting at all is not worth the time and money anymore. This is the absolute worst place to watch a hockey game.

    • Have to admit, Toronto fans are the biggest loser and they don’t care to win, it’s all about participation lol. Don’t fire anyone and give everyone a raise cause they tried hard. Goes well with MZ woke culture. Everyone has seen the interviews from core 4 players earlier this week. Entitled and lack of responsibility, no desire for winning the cup. If boston got eliminated, you think anyone from the team will say such thing as scapegoat?

  • MLSE should have acknowledged that it is the end of the Shanaplan and the Marner-Matthews era by firing Shanny and hinting at trading Marner. By not firing Shanny, MLSE looks weak. It comes off as they are not willing to make the hard decisions. Keefe was a good coach, but not good enough in the playoffs. Firing Keefe was the easy part. Firing Shanny is the hard part, but would have shown MLSE is willing to do what it takes to bring in a new era. To win a cup, AM34 must be made captain. If that means taking the C away from Tavares and making him a 3rd line center, so be it. Marner is the only attractive trade option Leafs have. Woll is injury prone and Sammy didn't get the job done. Leafs need a better goalie, a younger, more affordable 2nd line center to replace Tavares, and a decent right winger to replace Marner.

    • The reality is as long as they are making lots of money and they are they don't need to win or care about winning. Just enough to stay in the media, create lots of media buzz and controversy and keep people coming to the games and watching the Leafs on TV. They have done that really well and continue to make lots of money for the company and to share holders that is all that matters. Winning a cup is secondary at best.

  • Action speaks louder than words! 8 years of failure, what took so long? After 2-3 years with the same results, management should have started change then! Finally, a new coach is a start, new voice, new vision, and new systems. The new coach should bring in his own assistants, with experience in defense and PP/PK. The next focus is defense, big, heavy, tough d-man with grit! The final issue, is solid, steady goaltending. In order for the Leafs to be strong Stanley Cup contenders they need to be tougher to play against, grit throughout the lineup, defenseman that are 6'5" or taller and an experienced goaltender to mentor Woll, if management looks at him, to potentially be the number 1 starter next season. BIGGER throughout the roster and TOUGHER, the 2 KEY ingredients for future team success, in the regular season and playoffs!

    @Smf7161@Smf716112 күн бұрын
    • I'd love to see Woll succeed. But, he is injury prone. He gives the guys up front confidence.

      @republica7337@republica733712 күн бұрын
    • I agree, but they can't do any of that with 4 to 5 players taking up well over half the salary cap. They just don't have any money to pay anyone good .... Frankly Matthews would be easiest to trade and give the biggest return. Yes he score lots of goals, but that is all he does. He sure isn't a leader.

      @jn9604@jn960412 күн бұрын
    • 2-3 years is too soon. Most cup winners took at least 4, and the average is actually 4-6 years after a rebuild. I agree, 8 years before making changes is absurd, but 2-3 is too reactionary unless you really know what was wrong. Sometimes it's hard to say if it's inexperience or you're actually missing pieces or you overestimated a player's capacity to change in the playoffs that is bad for team culture and thus needs to go. Not everyone can be the Chicago Blackhawks and get it done very quickly. In fact, I would argue that the Leafs did really well against the Caps and stuff, especially since they were the underdogs and took better teams to 7 games. There was absolutely reason to be optimistic, especially since Matthews performed so well so early on. I would say losing against Montreal in 2020-21 was the correct time to change things, not in 2018 or 2019. Using your logic, you would have retooled the Tampa Bay Lightning after losing to Columbus and probably missed out on 2 cups.

      @Katie-hb8iq@Katie-hb8iq12 күн бұрын
    • Also, this team already had enough toughness and grit. I would argue the roster this year was probably one of the toughest in the entire playoffs. The hits per game proves that, as they had over 50+ per game. I have no idea what you're talking about. Defense and grit have not been the reasons they have lost in ANY series. Goaltending wasn't the problem either. Campbell and Woll gave them stupidly good numbers. Campball was 0.937 and Woll was 0.964. Sammy in Game 7 was .938, which is absolutely good enough to win. No, the problem with the Leafs was special teams were very bad, its core could not score playoff goals and scoring depth was a big issue in this 1st round Boston series this year, just as it was against Florida and Montreal

      @Katie-hb8iq@Katie-hb8iq12 күн бұрын
  • Said a lot of nothing same old same old. They should just clean house completely because failure for this long isn’t fixable unless complete wholesale changes are made. Think about it any job would they pay you high $$$ before you succeed in your roles and then they keep rewarding failure
