Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | The Highlands stoke kilted dreams of Scotland…where legends of Bonnie Prince Charlie swirl around lonely castles. We visit the "Weeping Glen" of Glencoe, bustling Inverness, and the battlefield at Culloden. Then we'll make a pilgrimage to the spiritual capital of a major clan, and go prehistoric at Stone Age burial grounds and Iron Age island forts. Venturing along the Caledonian Canal and watching for Nessie at Loch Ness, we work up an appetite for modern Scottish cuisine and enjoy traditional folk music. • You might be interested to know that some survivors of the massacre of Glencoe left Scotland for good and went to America. There they fell in with the Sioux and enjoyed (if that's the right term) their way of life enough to stay with them. There they fell victims to another massacre at Wounded Knee. The details of this little-known piece of history can be found in the book, "Glen Coe and the Indians," written by James Hunter.

    • You are correct, it is the most beautiful place on Earth. I come from Edzell, now live in England. I'm part of the Pictish diaspora, you know, the people who inhabited the North-East part of Britain before the Scots took over. The Eastern side of Scotland is often overlooked, as it stands in the shadow of the more dramatic Western Highlands but you've only got to visit the glens of Angus to know that you are in God's own country.

    • @redmotive National museum is incredible. The problem with the museums in London is if you want to see something like swords there are 5,000 or more? One could spend a month just looking at them. Overwhelming. Do the same in Scotland and the museums have 20 or 30 or about the right number to look at. The castles are incredible. After several days one gets castled out. There are just so many of them. Same with churches. They are incredible. But after visiting castle after castle or church after church one begins to realize they are were all built with my castle/church is better than yours because...... (fill in the blank.) Ours is bigger, taller, older, has more windows, more stained glass oldest bible, largest altar, most painting..... One soon begins to realizes it was soft of the nuclear arms race of the era. One thing I found was really cleaver were castles or manor houses with sword steps. Brilliant

With the majority of people having more 'disposable cash' it's understandable tourism has increased, but has immigration (old Eastern bloc citizens) really changed the Scots outlook?. I always thought the Scots were far more tolerant than their southern neighbors. England seems to have an issue, which according to what I read, is an issue of non stop immigration and all of them being given 'free stuff'... housing, education, medical services, etc and etc.

  • I'm planning a 2-week visit in either 2020 or 2021. One curiosity at the Culloden memorial: There are flowers and other mementos left at the clan markers, but one clan's stone is always heavily decorated-Clan MacKenzie, thanks to the Outlander TV series. I first learned about Culloden and the Clearances from that show, and have gone on to learn much more of Scottish history as a result. Fascinating and sad.

  • Having been to Scotland in 2019, it is more than any video can show. Appreciate seeing all that this video has to offer but would like so much more. It is true that Culloden Battlefield is an emotional experience, especially for decendants of those who fought and died there. The Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh every summer is a wonder to enjoy. Glasgow with all its majestic architecture and excellent sites is a trip unto it self. A short trip outside Glasgow you can learn of the Govan Stones or you can take short train trips to the birthplaces of Robert Burns or Dr. David Livngstone. St. Andrews will always be a place for me to return in the future. Pilotcry is a quaint town not to miss. Have a dram of scotch and enjoy. Slainte.

  • Thank you Rick Steves for your videos of the Highlands and of the Islands and Norway. My ancestors came from those beautiful places to America and some to Canada, Ireland, Australia. They left in order to survive. They were sons of Mac Eanurig (Henry) (Henderson, and it’s variations.) and married women of the MacDonald clan after the Scottish King “gave” Glencoe to to the MacDonald of Skye. Marrying was preferable to fighting. Two son’s of Mac Eanurig survived the Glencoe massacre and traveled North East and then to Orkney Isle and one married a Norse lady there. After Culloden, family members filtered to the lowlands, those with Mac Donald last names often switching to Henderson to stay alive, lived in areas in the Lowlands until they were able to go to Ireland and to Canada, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa or America. We are a scattered bunch, but we survived. I was happy to hear a couple of years ago, that the head of the Campbell Clan finally found it in his heart to apologize for what his ancestors did to ours in Glencoe. A terrible thing done can maybe now finally be healed for MacDonald’s and Henderson’s! 🤗
