    • The difference being, lions in the wild eat when they need to, they are typically in peak physical condition for their environment, able to keep up with their prey. These lions here at Fota are also very healthy, but are fed often as per their environment and situation, they can afford to be well fed. It is also the climate producing their fuller appearance as their coats have grown to accommodate or adapt to the cooler conditions in which they live, a stark contrast to the blistering plains of the Serengeti or the warm temperate environment of the Gir Forest.

      @theartsyzoologist@theartsyzoologist2 жыл бұрын
    • @@theartsyzoologist it’s not the climate that contributes to their coat! It’s that they’re WELL FED, HAVE A VET, DO NOT HAVE TO HUNT OR PROTECT TERRITORY. Cold weather will only make an animals hair grow more and lose hair in the heat. My cat SHEDS EVERY YEAR! My comment is these animals are beautiful and majestic and that I wish ALL OF THEM could live like they do and be as healthy. I know the difference between a lion in captivity and a one that’s free. Unfortunately the free big cats life span is shortened by lack of food, intruders, poachers and canned hunting. It’s why we need more conservationists!

  • The zoo seems to be getting a lot of undo hate. There's lots of signs that these.lions are doing great. Thing to address number 1; this is NOT incest. The lionesses are sisters, but the male is not their brother. Iys easier to keep the three parentS together and to relocate the mature cubs. To prevent incest all sexually mature cubs would have to be removed. The daughters would probably be placed in a different area with an unrelated male ( exactly what's going on here). Two: The small cages are not where the lions spend the majority of their time. They're main area is where the lioness with the cubs were at. The male was in that small area so that the workers could put food into his enclosure, and was then let out. When both lions were in the small area, it was for mating. You can see the door sliding up to let them into the grass area, but the lions chose not to go out. They have enough distance to separate themselves.. The main enclosure was big enough that the mom felt comfortable with how far the other lions were from her cubs. 3: it wasn't forced mating. The lioness naturally came into season. 4: the lions show no signs of unhappiness. Stressed/ abused cats often pase their cage. All three lions were seen laying down relaxing. All signs of aggression towards each other were do to mating. The snarl for " leave me alone" is normal. Stressed animals also wouldn't have such successful breeding. Stress reduces sperm count, and cause complications in pregnancy and birth. 5 cubs is an abnormally large litter. That one cub didn't survive is normal. That 4 of the other cubs made it shows great care. Young mothers also are more prone to complications. 5: There's conservation efforts because the lions aren't doing well in the wild. Poachers, habitat loss, and a host of other problems are making the wild population go down. In many species zoos are the only reason a species isn't extinct. 6: you can't just put them back in the wild. These lions are used to a slab of meat in their enclosure every day. They don't know how to hunt, or to fight off other predators. Research shows that they're too old to learn either. Successful learning has to start young. If you turn them loose they won't survive.

None of these idiots (yes those of you posting drivel, that means YOU) can listen or process facts. They just react like an entitled child and have a tantrum. Jordan, I appreciate your detailed list of what is facts vs hysteria, but unfortunately, none of the audience you need to reach will bother actually READING and LEARNING anything. And not a chance that they will come back and say, "Oh, ok, I didn't realize that" or "Really? Thanks for clearing that up" or even "Disregard my previous comment; I missed important information".

Mother lionesses keep their cubs away from male lions until they can run away on their own. Male lions in the wild dont usually come anywhere near their cubs until they are several months old. These arnt house kitties, and they dont really care much about their young. Its all about breeding. Less males in the pride, more females (their own daughters) they can breed when they ovulate.
