Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a frequently asked question, why do pilots sometimes taxi with only one engine?
Very often you can see smaller turboprop driven planes or jet airliners taxi to or from the gate with only one engine running. Why is that so? Primarily to safe fuel and the reduce the risk of loose debris being sucked up into the the engine.
But there is more to it than just turning off the engine or starting it later. Hydraulic, electrical and air-conditioning systems have different layouts and duties, meaning some engines create the necessary hydraulic pressure for the braking system for example or the power the nosewheel steering. So some system knowledge is required before turning off an engine during taxi.
Also, thermal stress is an issue. Many aeroplane manufacturers recommend that the engine needs to be running at least three minutes prior to applying take-off power to reduce thermal stress on the engine. Similar scenario when taxiing inbound with one engine. After applying reverse thurst, you need to let the engines cool down for three minutes at idle power before shutting it down entirely.
But see more why ONE ENGINE TAXI procedures have become a common practice among many airlines and pilots.
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

Real easy answer from me! My plane only HAS one engine!
Haha, same!
That is not an "engine", it's just a fan to cool the pilot's face - just watch the pilot sweating if this fan ever stops in flight!
@@tdoheron, good point! Glider pilots are either very cool pilots or parasites...
@@tdoheron, glider pilots are more cool than parasites, in my opinion. I like having more than one engine, especially over hostile terrain and extended bodies of water. I have experienced the known psychological phenomenon that whenever you are flying single engine in an area where you cannot glide to a survivable spot (say, 50NM out of Iceland, heading for Greenland) your one-and-only engine will invariably start sounding like it is chewing gravel, not oil! It takes a looong while to accept to the fact that the problem is in your head, not the engine.
@@tdoheron So in effect both the glider pilot and the normal pilot are both taxiing with only half an engine...
Travelling Ryanair? Bring an extra £25 for engine start.

Lol that joke never gets old
And for every cm of pulling the throttle £20
And £30 for flaps
also £40 for switching TOGA, and £100 extra for actual go-arounds (this would actually be sold as extreme sports as Ryanair land on fumes)

If you read these, a collab with the channel '74 Gear' (Kelsey is also a 747 pilot) would be very interesting!

After this Ryanair is gonna try fly with 1 engine for fuel saving. * wow thanks for the likes guys 😂
Lmao 😂😂
I heard once that in some cases the B727 performs take-off with #2 engine off. I do not know if that was a fact or nust a myth. Any thoughts?
Well. When I fly my plane on only 1 engine AHHAHAHAH. It's too expensive to fly with 2

it amazes me, that everything in aeronautics has a logical and often obvious reason, yet it's still surprising how much thought they put into it. Seems like one of the most streamlined industries out there, trying to reach maximum efficiency with zero tolerance for security risks.

@@gamingrextop8603 hmm
As a ground handler that operates with q300 and q400, it does really help to taxi to gate with engine 2 only running. That is because us ground handlers on the ground, have to connect the GPU on the left side. So it really helps and i think is a bit more secure for both parts! :) I know my english is terrible😝
Wow, its really nice to have insight from ground personnel, especially a video about operations on the ground. Thanks very much Also your English is very good!
I have daily turnarounds with Q300s and Q400s. They often taxi with engine 1 off, but occasionally with both engines on into the stand. Engine 2 powers the hydraulic system a captain told me. I don't think the shut down engine has a main purpose to provide safety for ground handlers. When EMB175/190, B737NG or A320s arrives, both engines are on even though the GPU connection is on the right/center/left side of the aircraft. Different procedures between airlines and ground handling companies. Some have to stay outside the red line until the aircraft comes to a complete stop, we put the chocks on the nose wheel and GPU and then wait for the engines and anti-collision to turn off. Then we approach the rest of the aircraft with cones and chocks.
Taxiing with 1 engine running is as weird as preforming an oll while cubing.
All points precisely covered. Very nice flow through the video.
That's a very clear explanation! Thank You!
I’m no pilot yet but I am always learning! Thanks to you! Ever since I started flying as a passenger for QantasLink here in Australia, the flights I take from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Mildura Airport (MQL) has always been in a Dash 8/Q400 and always knew it was to save fuel and possibly for noise too but the third I did not know about until now, Thank you Captain Joe!
Hello from Russia! You are the best!
i've always asked myself that. good to know Cap
that answers alot of questions I have had as I sit on a tarmac . Good stuff
It is to piss the maintenance guys off. Now both engines now have different PM and Cycle time maintenance .
Well that is an advantage on the Embraer 145 where they do the other engine for taxis on the opposite engine for taxis out for takeoff compared to taxis back on landing.
@@EwanMarshall P-3 normally flew long hours on 3 engines. Always fun., not as big a difference on taxi times but it makes the logs way off.
Actually, this helps safety, since you have a lower chance of a dual part failure if there's a difference in cycle time. The same principle applies to RAID Arrays in Computers: When a disk fails, and all of the disks in the array were bought in the same lot, there's a good chance that another one will fail shortly after, especially during the rebuild where the stress is higher. This is typically avoided by using same model disks that have different lot numbers and used time on them.
Not really, since the engine time and cycles are tracked individually. A cycle is counted as 1 flight, and ground operating time doesn't generally get counted... only flight operating time. Of course, there will be a difference in time/cycles if an engine has to be changed.
Even with brand new airplanes, you want to change out a new engine with older engine Every engine has its own pedigree. They move from airplane to airplane. Much better to have two from different lots and life cycles. Way less likely to a common failure mode.
Great job your the best I hope ur all the time good

At one point Joe was a Captain for Air Berlin operating their 737s. Hey Captain joe, regarding 1:59 FOD actually stands for Foreign Object Debris not damage :)
Last time I checked he went to flight school he is the pilot so he should know
@@CrosshairCT- i worked in airfield operations which is way more involved with FODs and stuff like this than pilots, worked in a control tower as apron/ground controller in a busy international Airport, and currently am going to flight school, so i should know as well :)
@@CrosshairCT- i actually had 2 weeks of training dedicated to FODs and their effect on airfield operations and safety when i did my airport operations training so trust me i know more :)
Same, I work Airfield Management gravel or rocks are not damage their debris. It could be a difference that comes from maybe a pilots perspective vs. Airfield ops. But Airfield litterally are the one responsible for FOD checks and FOD programs, but hey. Pilots hey, know everything right?
I am a pilot and a retired FAA employee. The acronym meaning changes with time. The object on the ground, is foreign object "debris". If it gets sucked into the engine, then it causes foreign object "damage". The official FAA definition is here: www.faa.gov/airports/airport_safety/fod/ The crews doing the FOD checks have a very important job.
