Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a famous question, why does the Boeing 747 or better known as the Jumbo, have this hump on top of her fuselage she is so well know for.
We'll be looking into the initial designs of Joe Sutter and his team of engineers. How the initial plan was a failure and how Juan Trippe more or less saved the 747 and Boeing from bankruptcy.
Also her biggest competitor at the time were three SST projects by Boeing, Tupolev, BAC and Aerospatial.
How a cargo plane was converted into a passenger plane and vice versa, and many more very interesting facts about the 747.
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

Dear Captian Joe, hello to you from India. My name is Shalom and I have been in this dynamic industry for over 25 years. In my over 25 years of experience, I spent almost 19 years with Emirates as a ramp and aircraft weight and balance trainer. When I started way back in 1993, I was first introduced to B747-200s. I loved this airplane, and was mesmerized just standing in front of it and admiring is sheer size, wow. As a kid in the 70s I used to go to Bombay airport to sendoff or receive my dad, who worked in Africa for awhile. That's when I first saw this aircraft on the runway with AI colours. I was told that she is AI jumbo jet and I was hooked on to her and the aviation industry. Today I am an retired aviation specialist, but I owe a lot to this beautiful aircraft, I am, what I am, is because of this wonderful airplane and what she taught me, be it freighter, combi or pax versions. I will always be a big fan of the B747. Lastly, I will also like to say Captain Joe, you are very good in what you do. Your videos are so simple and easy to comprehend, especially for youngsters who intend to join this amazing industry. You have great training qualities, and will do wonders in motivating youngsters to join aviation. Well done and keep up the work. Cheers

747 Era will not end. Even if the passenger version of 747 retires, the 747 freighter will still continue to fly
Yep. At least, for 35 years more. And after that, it will became as a signature plane for luxury flights.
It will, It might take decades, but it certainly will disappear at some point
Given that we still have Douglas DC-3s flying in parts of the world, I wouldn't hold my breath on the 747 going anywhere.
We need a 2 engined Boeing 747 for fuel efficiency; that way it will remain competitive with the rest; that way the 747 will be around for a while.
@@natelloyd4796 can't compare the two. They're both fantastic airframes, but the operating costs of 747s are way higher. Also the jumbo jet cannot land in all the small airports that a DC-3 can, simply due to size and weight (Some airports do not have enough length on their runways)

It's quite an ironic story as now the 747 is going back the other way - back to freight 😂 awesome content as always Joe !!
Thanks for this, Captain Joe. The 747 still stands (flies?) alone as an aircraft that leaves more modern planes looking like most cars today - generic and bland. The air frames may transition from passenger to cargo but that gorgeous and distinctive shape will grace the skies for a long time. The first jumbo already has its place in a small club of truly iconic aircraft like the DC-3 which revolutionized the industry.

@@Jdtackett0226 Abus is a German security tech firm. AIRBUS, on the other hand, is a competitor of Boeing.
MackP you obviously know that I was abbreviated (for the purpose of typing fewer letters). I don’t see what you’re point is. Hey man ! Congrats on 1m . Don't really follow your videos but have been subscribed since you were probably below 500k. 👍
I watched the original Boeing 747 roll-out ceremony when I was 13. 40 years later got to help the Boeing 747-8 happen, which I found amazing. I never got to meet Joe Sutter, but I have met enough of the old hands, an soaked up enough airplane design and creation, as well as made my own contributions to all the 7x7 programs, helped develop the "composite wing center" in the Boeing Everett factory, that makes the 777X wings, and I still get to walk around inside the factory experiencing these great ships come together. So from both positions, from outside the company as a kid and now inside, I've been astounded by this grande old clipper ship of the sky, still being made literally 50 years after the original 747-100 rolled out the door. You produced a good video. Thank you.
She is the Queen of the skies for a reason! My best international flights have been on a 747, hardly knew you were flying. Cheers
Yes Queen. Goddess is still the Concorde.
Well, Considering the comfort in international flights the 787, the A350 and A380 are ahead of the 747.
Yes, reason being illegal US subsidies and US embassies bribing and bullying you into buying Boeing crap. When they need to compete for real, they make MAX...

I recently watched a video on TV of a 747 being scrapped. Broke my heart to see that big, beautiful airplane being flown-in and landed, and eventually hauled away in trucks as shredded aluminum. I once visited the Boeing plant at Payne Field in Mukilteo, Washington where the plane is built. You get a special love for that plane when you see a line of them in various stages of assembly. Absolutely amazing! As it nears completion, they finish it with the airframe under stress by hanging ten-thousand pound blocks of concrete from the engine stanchions to simulate the weight of the engines. Weirdest thing I've ever seen!

That iconic hump is so beautiful looking, I can’t imagine another plane in the 747s place without its design language
Never forget standing along rwy 12L in TUS AZ. In early 70’s with friends watching Lufthansa B-747 training crews doing touch and go’s. At the time there were no other wide body airliners so it was unbelievable. When it wass on final approach we wondered how it managed to stay airborne. Beautiful.
Great video and welcome back! I missed you and your great and informative videos! One of my regrets is never having flown on a 747...
Wow..i never knew the 747 was originally designed for the air force cargo..thank you captain..
NO the 747 was NOT designed as a Air Force Cargo plane. The original design of the Boeing Air Force cargo plane was to have similar wings to the military C-5 which is a high wing design which means the wings are over the top of the aircraft. The 747 has a low wing design which is having the wings on bottom of the aircraft. Also the fuselage is completely different between the Cargo plane that the Air Force wanted and the 747. What Joe Sutter and the designers of the 747 did with the flight deck in the upper deck hump they took the basic design of it from the Cargo plane. This way they could covert the passenger planes into cargo planes after the SST 2707 was flying. Only issue was the SST 2707 was never built and the 747 in all versions have been now serving for over 50 years. I retired from Boeing 2 years ago after almost 30 years of employment at the assembly factory where the 747, 767, C-46, 777 and the 787 is built.
@Mikeske, I think what he meant was the hump design was for accommodating cargo.

My father worked first on the SST, and then on the 747 project. As a child, I wasn't able to to appreciate the significance of the design, nor the way the 747 would transform the airline industry. I just knew when I saw one that it was "my Daddy's plane." Unfortunately, I was only able to fly on one twice. When the end of the 747 production came, and the last one rolled out of the Everett Boeing plan, I think many of us felt genuine grief, as though we were losing a friend. I don't work in the airline industry, nor am I a pilot, but I just LOVE planes. I enjoy these videos and am gaining more understanding of how so many things have to come together to get us from point A to point B! Thank you Captain Joe.
