    • I'm a bit surprised the curators put it in Sam's hands. Further, that the curators didn't make Sam wear gloves. This is no disrespect to Sam, he acquitted himself famously. Relics such as that deserve the utmost of care. Thomas wasn't part of my childhood, but I recognize what Thomas means to children. Well done Sam.

  • I remember being taken to a model railway exhibition in Bristol, by my parents somewhere around 1969 or 1970. I saw Rev Wilbert Awdry, who struck me as quite elderly, with what was probably this model (I was only a child and so can't remember that detail). I remember my father telling me that this old man has written books and is famous.

  • Sam, you're a lucky man to find a partner who has fun at these things with you! My wife definitely supports my hobbies but would never go to a model rail expo! I've had to influence my daughters early on in life so I'll have someone to be excited with me 🤣 Just once in my existence I will aim to be travelling the UK at the same time as Warley! And I will be disappointed not to see you there! Cheers for the video. The expo looked awesome.

    • My wife, Tricia, insists on coming with me to exhibitions, she's a financial controller at work and I think that she accompanies me in an effort to limit my spending. Doesn't work because she keeps pointing me to things that she thinks that I want, she actually gets it right most times. Like Sam's girlfriend, Chloe, my wife also likes the model farm animals though in Tricia's case it's lambs and sheep that she likes.

  • If you want to visit the Talyllyn Railway in Wales by car, I'd recommend staying in Aberystwyth it is a very nice seaside resort town with a cliff railway, castle, university and the National library of wales, Lots of pubs too. Aberystwyth also has it's own narrow gauge railway as well the Rheidol railway which goes to Devils Bridge waterfall. So two stream railways in one trip. And while down there you can also go to Aberaeron and New quay which are picturesque seaside villages.

  • I very nearly introduced myself as you appeared opposite me at the Hornby stand within 20 mins of being there. You were busy filming so didn’t want to intrude. Thanks for mentioning N gauge, the Rapido Dyno Car is very good news for our gauge as it shows continued support from another manufacture.

  • Totally enjoyed your visit. Yes the COWS make many a model. It was back in the 1980s that I got to meet Wilbert and get 2 signed books. Also a quick chat of my 5 inch gauge bits. A rare smile as the others were just after the signed books. I do love Toby and yes have a body and wheels started again in 5". I too love the People at Dapol but this year Having spent out on a Black Five Boiler kit and a 57XX in O Gauge have run out of money.

  • Hi Sam, I went on Saturday, I'm guessing this was Sunday as it doesn't look as busy. I spotted Little Wicket there and had a chat with Hornby's Simon Kohler, partly about TT and partly giving him some feedback. One thing I asked was about Hornby track being code 80 and Peco code 55 and whether they're compatible. Apparently there is a slight difference in height so my understanding is currently they're not, which is a shame, however they may look at doing something about that such as inlays to offset the height difference, although there's nothing currently in development. Also from both the Hornby internet live talk and what Simon told me I've learnt a few things about production issues. For instance that they use a number of different manufacturers in China, not just one. Because China are still doing full lockdowns when there is a Covid outbreak, production at some factories has often been halted. In some cases multiple times. A lot depends on the district and some have been hit worse than others. This is the main reason some models take longer than others from being announced to actually being available. I mentioned that this sort of info is exactly what customers want to hear, if we know the reason why models are delayed, why costs have risen so much or why model shops aren't getting the number of models ordered and so have to cancel orders then people are more understanding. Good communication of issues is really important.

  • Man I do miss train shows. While seeing new fancy stuff from manufacturers is nice, I often can't justify the prices they put on them (but that's a rant for another day), I do love seeing the creativity of layouts that people put together just chock full of ideas and allows a bit of escapism for the lack of one's own creativity in their layout. Even though I haven't been to a proper show in a while, I still enjoy seeing others go to them and sharing, thanks.

I was surprised at the amount of empty space on the floor and given over to seating (always very much appreciated) for visitors: it made me wonder (doubt?) whether this was bigger than the exhibition at Alexandra Palace, say. I think I saw Callum's layout, but not sure if I saw him. Just to namedrop: I spoke to Larry Puckett - the DCC Guy, saw Jenny Kirk (spoke to her at other exhibitions) and had a chat with Dave of Ellis Clarke (ex-Hattons). I also spoke (briefly) with Simon Kohler of Hornby.
