They have searched all over the world for their “kim” which is innocent looking and pure and wth a voice of an angel and when they found her its perfect find
*They were looking for a girl with (1) enormous charm, and (2) lungs of steel; and they found it in Lea. **#Legend*
She was 17 when she first auditioned, 18 when they started rehearsing and 19 when the show started running. You have to understand that she was already a known child singer in the Philippines and was with Repertory Philippines. Her very first audition piece, she sang The Greatest Love Of All. And when asked to sing another song, she sang On My Own. This audition was probably the last one in London when they have to decide which of the two girls- Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson, both products of Repertory Philippines- would play the original KIm. Monique of course ended up as the understudy. There is a complete DVD of the making of the show.
When the show is running she's 18 not 19.
The Greatest Love of All was actually her SECOND song. she said it herself after singing on my own on Spotify

Lea was 17 at that time :) That was a 3 day intensive audition process then was asked to go to London for the final Assessment. They started to look in the Uk, ended up empty handed, then search in The US, New York, L.A, Honolulu then they realised most of the girls who were really good either a Filipino or half Filipino so why not go to the Philippines instead so there they found Lea and 12 more Filipinos.

Lea Salonga is probably, one of the best singers from the Philippines and she received a Tony Award too.

For me, she's the best. Her voice is so crystal clear, angelic, and pure. The way she sings is just perfect for me, she doesn't yell or belt, she just controls her voice very well. She's also very humble and has humor.
She is the best...she's a widely acclaimed international star, a disney legend and got international awards too... there are many great singers in the local scenes but have not really cracked the international scenes..
I think she was/is one of the best Broadway singers in the world.
Saying that she is one of the best Filipino singers is an exceptionally high bar as well. The Philippines has to have some genetic predisposition for incredible singers! I've been there several times and it seems like every hotel, restaurant and bar has live performers and they were all amazing!
I saw miss Saigon back in the early 90's in Broadway NYC when I was a kid. I teared up when she died at the end. She was phenomenal. It was like watching a live movie at front. I was blessed to see her playing as Kim not the other substitutes. One of the best Broadway show ever.

Our student body President Ray Santos was in the Broadway production of Miss Saigon for 10 years so he was on stage with her!
Leah was 17 yrs old when she auditioned. They allowed her because she was about to turn 18 in a few weeks. When she went to London then that was the time she turned 18. Talk about timing. 😀
Mm interesting, Lea´s vibrato is always great. By the way, in my opinion, I think it is much harder playing Kim than Eponine, although she aced both ofc.

Her crisp pronunciation of each words, it's something that is so rare in many singers without it being so obvious and off.
She was one of the few Filipino icon who make us all proud before Manny Pacquiao became famous in the world. Whenever I hear her sing Sun and moon, i feel emotional. Her voice is so soothing, so angelic.
This is not the actual audition but a call back. It's sort of a preparation for the final callback in London. Her audition songs are On My Own and Greatest Love of All. Trivia: She only prepared one song and that is On My Own and she was asked to sing another song.
Miss Saigon is one of my favorite Broadway shows... it is so sad and some parts are heart-wrenching, but it has moments like this song too... Lea is like you said, a 'powerhouse'. what a talent.
She was 17 during this audition. She got a callback. The three guys watching are the producer, lyricist and director.
That was Claude-Michel Schonberg, who wrote the music for the musical.
He also composed the music for Les Misérables, which is what Lea wanted him to sign. Good for her in not missing that opportunity!

The producers (miss saigon/lesmiserables) description while looking for the lead role "She has to look and sound innocent but with the lungs of steel bcos she'll be onstage most of the time"... And the songs in that show pretty much has high notes
in spite of her talent & achievements, lea kept a low key & modest. we loved her when she play annie for the repertory philipines during her younger days. lea opened the door for asian actors. she did our country proud.

Leah was 17yrs old when the auditions happened here in the Phils, she turned 18 before the production started in UK. I believe this video is the 2nd round of her audition because she mentioned in an interview before that in her initial audition she performed On my own drom Les mis.

Ive seen her live, shes amazing one of the best voice ive heard.
I saw the this whole documentary and it is even more impressive to see how they found Lea. I mean, c'mon they went all around the world to look for the "one" the "Miss Saigon." You're right, it was like the role was literally made for her and all the stars aligned at the right time for her. The moment she walked into that audition, it was like - "C'mon, she's the one!"
