    • Yes! She fully immerses herself in the character she is portraying and never breaks character throughout her performance. Regardless of the setting. In this performance, she is Eponine from start to finish and doesn't stop until she leaves the stage.

  • The 10 year cast that night with a full orchestra and massive chorus is the best show of all time. The talent on stage was off the scale. Lea had to nail it just to keep up. Gut wrenching song delivered with absolute perfection.

    • You could really tell the difference between the orchestra in this ensemble and the one in the 25th Anniversary show. Though the orchestra in the 25th Anniversary was very good, the 10th Anniversary one was pure perfection.

  • I had the privilege of getting my first couple singing lessons from a good friend who studied Opera for 8 years. One of the videos she would show me after we practiced was this one. At the time, she would comment on Lea's technique and it all went over my head. Now, almost 10 years later and having practiced on my own, I can finally see it. Lea's performance of this song encompasses all three vocal qualities: Head register, Chest Register, Mix range. Close your eyes and TRY to find a moment where you think she is going into one or the other. It's almost impossible to know where she's mixing, where she's using full chest, where she's going into heady mix or falsetto. This was what my friend was trying to point out: someone with extraordinary vocal technique will fool your ears. They can ascend their range with very little resistance or breaks. For Lea, there are no breaks and she never sounds like she's reaching too hard for a note. She also performs "I Dream a Dream" much later on in her career!

  • Lea sells this scene so perfectly. The musical choices, the acting choices, the eye movements, head movements, the facial expressions, the diction. She could have just got up there and sang the song perfectly as a pop/contemporary singer. But that's the difference. She's an actor in musical theater. The degree of difficulty in making those choices is the artist's challenge. Yes, her choices bring us to tears because they are so perfect.

When I found out that Lea was resuming the role, I immediately got tickets. The second time around, the show went from good to great, Lea elevated it to an epic, emotionally overwhelming experience. I loved her duet in 'Still, I believe'. After intermission, it got sadder and sadder, I was sobbing toward the end, and lost it altogether when she died. My cup runneth over. Lea is a true gift!

    • Another reason for that is because she is the first non Caucasian woman to be cast as Eponine in a Broadway musical. She had to be absolutely perfect all the time, every time. If she ever made a mistake, that would've been the end for her because of the extreme prejudices within the industry. She had to constantly prove herself to the critics that she deserved the role.

Just look at how much effort, how many years of training and dedicated rehearsal, has gone into delivering such an 'effortless' performance! 'Discovered' her recently and blown away. The thing that made me emotional - VERY - was her much later interview where she describes the extent to which racism dogged her throughout, and limited quite a number of her career options.

The song catalogue in his masterpeice of a show are in my opinion the best of any Musical. I would like to mention Nathania Ong who played Eponine....... I was in the middle of row 2 around 10 feet from the stage. Nathania was right in front of me as she sang On My Own and and it was beautiful. As she sang the last few words I was so close that I saw a tear roll from her eye. I was sniffling anyway and that had me grabbing for a tissue..... not for the first, or last time I hasten to add!

  • I began to appreciate her voice when in early 1990s I heard her sing from an old album of hers (1980s). We cheered when she landed the lead jn Miss Saigon. Her voice is very very beautiful. I wonder why she wasn’t given the same chance as other singers in the USA.

  • Thanks so much for reacting once again to the legend Ms Lea Salonga. She never miss to amaze me every time I hear her sing and perform. • I’ve heard a lot of Eponine performances and they gave me the impression of strong-willed women who decided to know their place in Marius’ life. Lea’s rendition however is a whole new world (pun intended.) She gave me a picture of a frail girl willing to eat the scraps thrown by Marius & Cosette just for the chance to forget that her heart is broken into a million pieces and she doesn’t know how to start picking them up.

  • You just feel every emotion in each word/lyric. The clarity of enunciation and emotion per word... delicious. You feel what the character feels. The pain and the beauty of unrequited love. Bravo, Lea!

  • I've heard this song many time but this is the first time I listened to it. So powerful. Here I am, 75 year old, sitting here with tears running down my face. Stephanie's strong reaction helped me to react even more. Good job Steph almost holding it together. Enunciation and clarity in her voice, outstanding.

  • After seeing Lea in this performance way back when it first aired, I was in love. I had to get the DVD (and then the Blu ray) so I could watch it over and over. As an aside, at the end of this concert when they bring out the "17 Valjeans" from around the world, keep an eye out for a young Henk Poort from the Netherlands. Decades before gaining internet attention for singing "Phantom of the Opera" with Floor Jansen on Beste Zangers, world audiences could glimpse him here.

  • Thank you so much for picking this masterpiece and sharing your knowledge. But what I like even more is that you do not clinically look only at Leas perfect technique in singing and articulating, but to let her impress and move you by her enormous potential as a story-teller and her ability to incorporate Eponine. She definately is THE Eponine! As often as I watch or even listen to this performance she grabs me right by the heart, and I cannot help myself. The tears just rise into my eyes.

  • I know Lea personally. She taught me a few of her tricks to be able to sing like her…or i should say she tried but she doesn’t have any tricks. Just phenominal technique.

  • great seeing you get lost in the performance. such a great rendition of the song. watching her sing brought me back to like first grade music class when my teacher was teaching us how to form our lips around vowels so they'd project better when singing lol
