Very interesting. $450- 1000 seems like the point of diminishing returns for the untrained ear.
Yoo hey shutter authority I love my videos and you inspired me to make blender videos in my other channel
I agree with that assessment. I'm not a violin player at all but tone is very important to me when I buy guitars. Tone can also be very subtle. From what we get sound wise in this video, the #4, and #5 were my favorites. But what really never comes through in video is how it feels in the hands while playing, and that is the best point to start from for me personally.
Not just for the untrained ear. That's where you are completely wrong.
AND for the trained ear, as famously proven on pile after pile of properly blinded tests
An accomplished musician can make even an entry-level instrument sound good..
Without hearing them in person, I prefer the 5th violin. Not surprised to hear it wasn't the most expensive. I have found that my preference in other instruments is always the "second" best.
I picked #5 too. It's like the richer you are, the less you get for what you pay for. Spending $10 million for $200,000 worth of violin and the rest is just to brag that you can spend an extra $9,800,000 for nothing.
thats probably because Number One best is usaully placed there by the maximus snobs and usually follows all the snob rules and construction to the maximum (weather or not its actually better) and thus second best that gets there by less snobisms includes more inovations but snob opions keep it #2
I also felt #5 nicer than #4. But to be fair, the Strad is hundreds of years old xd
@@samuelhugo3387 It’s mostly because of history.
I enjoyed #5 the most, #4 next and #2 the least.

You are so right lol. Was thinking the same thing. It more depends on the person
I consider the cheap Amazon to be the most valuable violin for it provides people wanting to learn violin the means to develop this new valuable skill. So having such a starter violin and starting a passion like that is priceless.
Except it sounded so bad!
It also forces someone to make it sound developing a greater skill
That's not the point. The point was which sounds the best, and it's obviously not that one!
@@maryb2798 Maybe in this case. There were blind tests, where experts preferred a plastic violin over the Strad. And they not only preferred it, they actually were convinced they picked the Strad. I think that speaks for itself. And for the bias.
When I started, my teacher told me to rent a good violin instead of buying a cheap one (until I knew I liked violin and wanted to invest in a better one). It was a really good advice because you would get less results on a bad violon and I don't know if I would have kept the motivation to learn.
With 4 and 5, you can hear the bow gripping the strings. They have incredible response and crisp, clean start and finish.
I knew that the second one was the cheapest because my violin sounds like that. I need a new one

@Enioko you're saying it's common to hear giornos theme coming from a 10mil violin or just more common bc I dunno if anyone can afford that
Megalovania was played with the bells of the big Ben. so yeah, why not? ;)
I was surprised to find that my favorite sounding violin of the bunch #3 was the $450 student grade. Second favorite was #5. I honestly didn't like how dark the $10m strad sounded, but #2 was so obviously the cheap amazon one. This makes me feel better about buying a $700 Schuster&Co as my first violin. If I had spent any more $$$ the difference in sound would probably go unnoticed by me. I'm thinking this will last me for a long long time, if not for life
Yup the $450 violin definitely punched way above its price. I could not tell much difference from the rest, except the $70 Amazon which really stuck out as bad.
I also liked n 3 and 5 most... that's probably why i can't appreciate high end concerts :)
@@evgeniiamahato5679 its easier to tell in person but you can hear the instrument is warm but it doesnt have as many overtones and doesnt resonate well.

I'm a violinist and was super curious to see if I'd be able to recognize the "best" violin. I placed the first three violins correctly, but I kept being uncertain about #4 and #5. There are probably a few factors here which we can't recognize as listeners, regarding the playability. Rob talked a lot about how it felt to play #4, how the instrument wanted to give back a lot, and I think this is something that only the player can percieve best. To me, #5 sounded nicer than #4, but that's only half of the violin's personality. The other half is how it connects with the player. So I'm curious if I would still have ranked #4 above #5, if I had the opportunity to play it, myself 🤔
4 and 5 are the best obv. To me. It's more a matter of taste which you like
same here
Hi Ania, similar assessment here, I also preferred the brighter tones of 5/Gagliano and would use it to play something like the Sibelius violin concerto, but 4/Strad when I went back and listened and compared just the last 2 violins, the Strad def had some attitude and grit, i can't really explain but it had a unique sound which set it apart from the rest. It's too bad they didn't have a Guarnerius violin to compare which has some deep tones on the G and soars on the E and it has the ability to project like 1/DiMateo violin
To me #4 and #5 were the best and from personal preference I like the sound of #5 better, But Stradivarius violins are thought to really sing in the higher ends producing a "silvery tone" which was what made the difference in my ear
Guessing from most expensive to cheapest - 35412 They do sound different, even though I have no musical experience. Also 3 and 5 are very similar.
1. A violin. 2. Another violin. 3. Definitely a violin. 4. Sounds like a violin. 5. Still a violin.
Yes me too
Nah there are definitely differences, but maybe its just because I've been playing for almost 10 years now, that I can hear the difference
Lol
Naw that amazon one was hollow and empty - stood out the most...in the wrong way....
#2 was the worst, I could hear that. I bet #4 or #5 to be Stradivarius, they looked older and sounded better.
The 3rd one sounds surprisingly good when considered its value
Mood. I honestly feel it's almost as good as the Strad, tho not quite as good as the Gagliano.
I thought the same even after the first round! It surprised me (:
yes. I thought it was the 100k...
it sounds very noble
It’s shocking
Some observations I made about the Gagliano vs the Stradivarius. The Gagliano has a “bigger” sound the Strad has a much “richer” sound. The Gagliano is for the assistant concertmaster while the strad is for a cocncertmaster or pure solo work
I thought that the second one was one of the most expensive, I loved the sound 😅

@@vickielawson3114 Lol not at all. The saying survived the test of time and now is used everytime a practitioner tends to focus more on the artifact, instrument or tool rather than focusing on its skills...

I definitely knew 1,4,5 were the best but inhad alot of trouble deciding between 4&5. To me they're used in different situations. 4 was very tearful in every performance. But 5 was also vibrant warm but not as tearful as the Stradivari which is ok when changing genres

I didn`t want to guess the price, I just tried to decide, which sound I like more. Different songs had their own champions, but overall I loved the #5 violine.
I honestly thought the Gagliano had a more crisp sound and better responsiveness for the faster songs, especially Mario. The Strad had a deeper, more full sound and really brings out an emotion with the slow song that the other violins just cannot capture.
As someone who has literally never touched a violin, I liked 5 the best, and 2 the worst. 1, 3, and 4 all pretty much sound the same to me

Agreed. I thought number 2 was the only one that sounded noticeably worse than the rest. I think I would save my $9,999,650 and just get the $450 one. And the average person would never hear the difference.
As a non musician I thought the exact same thing.
я далёк от музыки, но мой выбор аналогичный. Номер 4 близок к номеру 5, но 5 звучит лучше для меня. 2 - ужасен.

like the old guy explained, its not difference in sound that makes it that expensive but supply and demand

I've got to say that I like the Gagliano over the Stradivari. The Strad has very crisp and harmonic tones, and the Gagliano has more soul and weighty resonance, IMO. I like that full sound that melts into the next notes more than the Strad and gives a more visceral feeling in the gut. Plus I can use the leftover 9.9 million to buy a nice house to keep my instrument in.
I felt exactly the same. I speculate it's the age of the Strads that have dampened its resonance.
Di Mateo for me, but its close to call. Either way, that or the Gagliano has a better sound than the strad to my ear
I agree.
Gagliano for me too
Same here.
I'm not a musician, but an audiophile who has been to live symphony concerts. I got them mostly in order, except for the top 2, I had reversed. I noticed the Strad's rich vibrant tone, but preferred the expressive voice-like dynamic tone of the $100k instrument, although I can see where ti would depend on taste and what kind fo music you are playing and what kind of emotion you want to express.
The Gagliano sounds better than the Strad to me....but I'm listening on a smartphone sooooo goodbye bass
I loved 4&5. They sounded beautiful
"it's valued at over 10 million dollars, and it is absolutely worth it" [F]: Doubt
F
Is a unique violin whose sound can't be reproduced. The 10 million is just a nominal value, in practice is priceless since its cannot be replaced no matter how much money you have. Is not unheard of ridiculous asking prices north of $40 millions in public auctions, so $10 millions for this one only means is not one of his finest (I could have missed it but I don't recall the video author mentioning the name of the violin)
@@Imman1s in practice, my car is priceless because of the memories I have with it and time invested in it, it couldn't simply be replaced by a matching model Reality is, once someone purchases a priceless item at a fixed sum, that's what it's been priced at I'm just making a little joke because it's only going to be "absolutely worth it" for a very, very small subset of people who are *really* into violins, and don't mind dropping 10mil on one.. even 99.9% of professional violinists would not consider it "worth it", because for most, it's unlikely they would ever recover that cost with the income they make performing with it
Well maybe for you, but for the world renowned violinists, they are worth it
@@baucelabs1159 Very valuable violins aren't owned by the musicians in most cases. They are owned by the orchestra or a group of people or organization that has the funds to buy them. Often it is more of a way to give prestige to a player or orchestra. That being said there are amazingly good, others great and others so-so Strads and other makes also. Very few people have the skill to recognize the difference. Frankly I was most imporessed with the $100,000 violin. But without playing it or hearing it in person.....that doesn't mean much.

The sound seems to get warmer and richer as you go through the selection Rob.
I thought it was number 5. I like the sound of number 5 better than the Strad.
It's because it sounds better with the high notes (which a violin is most known for) while the 10M violin shines in the lower notes. Also it's more expensive because it's rare. Supply and demand. Not purely because of its quality. The way he's playing the strad could also be affected by him being more careful because it's so expensive and as he said, he was quite nervous just holding it.
Same here :S i hear num 5 is the best ....

I don't play instruments but two things stood out: one on the Amazon one, and one on the Stradivari. The Amazon one sounded like it was "nervous". It just sounded to me like it was very stiff for something that is supposed to be made of a warm tonal wood. The Stradivari just looked the part. The second it showed up, it just looked like it had some age behind it, and it was the sort of age that would be very difficult to replicate.
I can’t believe I picked the Strad! I have no experience with violins but the beauty of this sound is out of the world
Imagine you accidentally touch one of the violin and the whole shelf containing violins falls down each cost 10M
Yeah, that’d be a nightmare.
Time to sell my house and my body😂
@MAD GAMER you'll have to sell your soul
😂😂😂😭😭😭 That made me laugh but oh man that would be so awful.
@@haleemapm4385 i dont think my soul is worth that much😂
I knew the 4th was the 10M$ just from his reaction 😅 He looked happier playing it
That's why comparisons like this aren't terribly reliable. If the performer knows what he is playing, it can influence the quality of his playing even if he doesn't mean it to.
#3 had him looking like he was fondling dogshit lmao
Me to lol!! He had a smile while playing it
No poker face.
We found Sherlock Holmes in the comments! XD
I've never touched a violin in my life, I am not a musician, but I was able to arrange those violins by price. To be honest, I wasn't sure whether the Stradivari is the 4th or the 5th, but the 4th sounded slightly better to my ears so I picked that one. Also, their difference is not so apparent in the first song. At least it wasn't for me.
It's really interesting reading the comments and seeing the difference between those with untrained ears and trained ears. I played the violin for 5 years and although that's not a long time at all I'd like to think it helped me guess all of these correctly.
Wonderful experiment! Musician seems, however, to change his “reverence” as playing different instruments. Hard for him to put his “heart” into playing $70 instrument. Perhaps blindfolded musician handed violins in a random order would result in a “double blind” experiment. ,
john brynjolfsson this guy sciences
Yes to double-blind!
john brynjolfsson 😯🤔
no the musician would know by sound and wood quality ect...
By sound I immediately noticed the Gagliano, the Amazon and the Stradivarius. Very easy to notice just by ear. The amazon sounds so bad, easy for a beginner to quit when playing it...
Don't care which one costs 10 million, I like number 5.
me too
Me too
True
Agreed! The sound was just so creamy ...
I like number three it sounds more crisp.
This was very educational! I guessed right pretty easily about which one was the $70 Amazon violin but the rest feels blurred together to me. I did think the Stradivarius was probably #5 or #4, so I was almost right. 😂
I know nothing about violins, but my ear picked out the Stradivarius immediately. But to my dumb ears, the other four sounded much the same, except the Amazon which sounded dull. Thank you for the comparison... well done!
Just call me Beethoven... Cuz I can't hear the difference 😫
Lol that’s some dark ass humor
Sadge :(
😝
holidays are pagan Jesus coming soon! not JW yessir
@@psalm3496 YESS KEEP PREACHING
I picked 4 and 5, they were the nicest sounding, I think 4 slightly beat out 5, but so close, it's hard to tell.
That cheap one was horrible in all areas, sounded like it had a mute on!
@@TheBonsaiZone yeah the cheap one sounded like crap XDDD, I also picked 4 and 5 after the firt 2 songs but I have to pick 5 after mario. I guess I would be more sure with headphones on though..
They all sound like violins to me XD Slrry, Im not a violinist Im learning the piano through youtube lol
@@TitaniumTronic I am the same, I am a respecter of a quality sound though
Same here, that 4 sound immediately distinguished itself gorgeously
I like the sound of 3rd and 5th violin the most ✨
4 are so awesome that sound, sounds like heaven
For some reason my ears are loving the "Gagliano" Much more than the. Other 4.
Right? I much preferred the tone of the Gagliano. Just this smoother quality to it
Agreed my fav. Like the dude said at the end though, the strat is worth 10 mil bc of it’s scarcity regardless of sound quality. I think the Gagliano is def the best sounding. I thought the first one worth 10k sounded like turd
Spotted! It sounds great and looks awesome 😊. I also ranked it over the Stradivari...
Me tooooo
I have to admit, it was very close between the Gagliano and the Strad for me. The Strad sounded like it was laughing through the fast pieces: Like “Ok, you want me to play this? Sure! Why not?” And the Gagliano sounded like it took it more seriously. Funny
damn, that 450 dollar one is really good value for the money. im impressed.
Agreed. I really loved the way that one sounded. Even more than the stradivarius. That Amazon one sounded horrible. I would skip that all together, even as a total beginner.
@@MouseyBusiness I'm glad I'm not the only one! I loved the 450.
While the Gagliano and Strad played beautifully, I preferred the Di Mateo. The highs were absolutely amazing. Cool vid.
Hi from Cremona! I easily heard the difference. Big 👍🏼 for n5 Gagliano, maybe surprised me more than Stradivari's masterpeace ( because i didnt know him) It was easy to find the Stradivari, the unique color helped alot 😉
Rob: "it's valued at 10 million dollars and it's totally worth it." Me: ... k.
I put 2 in easy bottom. Horrible. 1 and 3 in same class "decent". 4 and 5 in the same "great" class.
Same here.
huruey I was too uncertain since I know little about violins but I had a strong feeling about 2 and 4. Good thing I didn’t get them backward.
Same four slightly better than 5 though on second song you can hear it in the lower notes.
Totally agree with this guy.. I feel 3 is a bit weaker than 1 maybe and feel 4 is better than 5... 2 is the reason I’m not fond of violins
Same
I picked 4, but I love 5 overall for appearance, and sound together.
I've never played the violin, but just been watching a bunch of violin videos on YT.... and I guessed all of them right! The main thing for the $10M one was I was just looking for something that looked more like a collector's item, rather than the sound. The $70 one was the easiest to pick out. The rest, for the untrained ear, was tricky.
