What makes this beef so great is that they are both legitimately the best fighters in the world. It’s literally just them at the top and everyone else is trailing behind.
I think Gustafson is arguably the third best in their division. TBH it wouldnt be a huge shock to me if he manages a win against one of them but that's just my opinion

He’s a double champion, the first double champion to defend both titles, a UFC hall of famer and now has a nice cushy commentator job getting paid every week while Jones has yet to fight in almost three years and still unsure if he’ll even compete again and has basically lost his family.

That interview with DC when he's holding back tears and says "if he won both fights then there is no rivalry, so... so I don't know..." breaks me. He's totally drained, he has nothing left to give and still came up short, and I think that's a feeling most people that have competed in anything can empathise with. I'm glad he's found his rhythm in heavyweight and hope he continues to improve, he seems like a great guy.
and the worst part is that people use that moment to make fun of DC the most for crying and showing a human side. When I first saw that clip thats what made me a fan. He's not a fake person like Jon, he's a real compassionate person

Every championship in the history of sports can have some sort of asterisk attached to them, and unless they actually cheated to win like Lance Armstrong or the 2017 Astros, applying those asterisks is pointless.
I kind of agree with it tbh. The belt is supposed to mean the person who is the best fighter at that weight. Even though DC won it and behaved like a champ while Jon Jones isn't, he didn't prove at that point that he was the best fighter at that weight class so to me it was a false belt, or more like an interim champ sort of deal.
If you want the belt, you have to get it. Simple as that. Jon Jones won in their rematch, but then tested positive for steroids. He could not get the belt. People's opinion about who's the champ is whatever they want it to be. If you want the belt, you have to get it. And that means following the rules to get it.
