Is a Performance Cooling System Worth It?

So we’ve been testing our rally e36 pretty hard in the desert and recently it took a bit of an L. The cooling system seems to not be too happy being slinged around in the heat and the dirt. However, e36’s are notorious for having cooling system issues so we consider ourselves lucky to have gotten this far. But it’s finally time to revamp the ‘ol cooling bits and see exactly how cheap the factory plastic parts really are!
We have a new channel!

yeah thats a great idea and its also something in cars that i am very interested in!
We need a “Are Forged Internals Worth it?” Money Pit episode
Depends, every engine has its point where you need to upgrade to forged parts, all based on how much power you wanna make
Honestly anymore a lot of "performance cars" already have forged internal components. Basically it comes down to this: How many cranks and/or blocks do you want to replace running 24 lbs of boost and a hundo of spray-to-go?
That’s pretty obvious tho. Don’t need a video on it. Of your upping the power significantly, then yeah it worth it
@@beersoap8406 that was sorta my point. Very high cost low reward thing for them. Extremely minimal quantifiable gains would make for an extremely boring like 3 part series with a full on engine teardown

Not with mishimoto parts though.
Fun fact: the holes on the left and right side of the water pump are so you can use two M6 bolts to push out the pump. Insert them and tighten them a bit at a time and it will pop your water pump right out. It will save you time from hanging on the pump and trying to pry it loose

Always reuse the stock fan shroud, makes a massive difference to cooling
Really why’s that?
@@DamzXdav most stock fan shrouds are fully enclosed which almost creates a vacuum which helps evacuate a ton more air. Not all stock shrouds are enclosed however and most newer after market ones are so this comment would have made more sense 20+ years ago
For my electric fan, the "optional" wire was 'supposed' to be hooked up to the AC relay and always be on with the AC. I ended up making a toggle switch connection for those "just in case" times
Wait bruh, the fan comes on to cool the free-on for the AC so it’ll blow cool air- what? Lmao.
@@joshloaf89 I think it makes the fan spin when the AC compressor is putting extra load on the engine. If you have AC it must be hot out anyway. That being said I have no idea.
@@joshloaf89 not if you remove your AC :)
@@joshloaf89 no it hooks up to the fan relay, so when the AC is powered on so will the fans
I thought that was for the auxiliary fan which is triggered by the radiator temp. It’s two speed so it triggers at like 165f and another at 185f I forgot exact temps. You jump the lower temp signal wire to your new fan so it goes on only when the car starts getting hot. Or you can run it to an ignition source or manual switch.

Fucking hell the bots are rampant in here

Man that expansion tank and radiator were on its absoloute last legs. I'd never seen a metal expansion tank for an e 36 and excellent decision on a t stat with a metal housing. So much better and they're reusable
FYI, that Mishimoto aluminum expansion tank is notorious amongst the E36 community. Not a recommended item at all.
@@TranceFur same for e46 guys, everybody says they dont hold up at all
I got one last year. 😳 What's wrong with them?
It's not an expansion tank by Mishi, it's an overflow tank with no provision for having the 'overflow' flow back into the rad upon cooling. E30 self bleeding system is de rigueur in the e36 'community' because of the stupid US expansion tank system design.

It’s amazing how different car channels in the 90s and early 2000s were to Donut. They have reinvented the genre for a new generation. Great work to everyone!
Don't forget to mention that when you swap a clutch fan for a Electric fan you get more horsepower! Also if you redo an entire cooling system on a vehicle that you are going to be pushing hard, swap the ethylene glycol based coolant for a propylene glycol based coolant after a very thorough flush. It cools better and is easier to clean up in case of leaks.

NEW MONEY PIT LESSSS GOOOO
Who knew every E36 came with a Toyota fog-light bezel?!
Well every e36 has its stock fog lights fall out so they needed a more reliable solution.
@@GXKid06 the e36 my family has owned no fog light fell except for one after a crash and the light house was broken haha
@@GXKid06 yota is the way.
@@GXKid06 yotaforce
To be fair, the E36 foglight system is cool and convinient when it works as intended. But i mean.. How often do you REALLY need to pop out a foglight? Think i've changed 1 bulb in 10 years.
Just need to mention that I'm so happy that you flipped the screw clamps on either side of the temp sensor piece around. The first test fit showed the screw part (maybe) contacting the aluminum radiator, and it made me wince.
When I put the electric fans on my Jeep I went with the same setup. I hooked my green wire ( the override switch) to my AC relay. So when the AC compressor kicked in the fan came on to pull the air through the condenser. But over all great setup for anyone looking to keep it cool.
Converting the fan to electric makes a big difference in throttle response and parasitic loss. Especially when you are beating on it and the fan clutch is engaged.
Those E36 i6's have a "fan delete mod" where you put in a cooler thermostat, and WaterWetter for more efficient cooling. If you don't live in an area where you have bumper to bumper traffic, and can always have decent airflow through the radiator, you can lose the fan entirely. Pretty common in E36 forums
Nah, unless you're making pisspoor hp the loss is negligible and you get way more airflow from a single clutch fan with a shroud than even a dual efan setup. Also a clutch fan is way less likely to fail and cause overheating. the only real advantage of going to electric fans is space
@@PhantomPhaze pretty sure on the cooling episode if money pit miata zach points out its all about the cfm of your fans, convinced me to put a dual electric fan shrouded on my sbc350, I never had issues before but my engine definitely stays a constant temp now
Rename this episode to: "I prefer metal"
Aluminum sucks I think. It gets really hot and doesn't absorb heat very well like a lot of other metals.
@@ericbogar9665 The opposite is true. Aluminum is fantastic at heat absorption and dissipation. Not the best metal, but when you factor in price, strength, and weight, it is quite literally the number 1 metal.
@@ericbogar9665 actually copper absorbs heat really well, but alumunium releases captured heat really well that's why alumunium radiators are a great choice as they won't stay hot ruining the purpose.
@@TanmayHSingh-mj1ne I didn't know that. I just know they get hot really quick and can easily liquify with enough heat. I doubt its enough heat from a motor though.
I mean, you really need to change your plastic thermostat housing with a metal one.

Let's get this beautiful man a lift in the shop. Even though i enjoy watching him work on stuff like a peasant. Zach is the man 👍🏻
Give him a lift he looks like a pro, when he has to jack it up himself, put it on stands and slide around under it he looks like the rest of us. Some of the old money pit miata stuff he was in his driveway, if you want to show people on youtube that they can do it you have to do it like they would at home. I'd go as far as saying as neat as his fancy bleeding tool is, that's not helping 99% of us who would never invest that type of money into something you'd use every couple of years. Show people how to use the Lisle bleeding funnel, it's more practical to the target of the channel vs the compressed air vacuum cooling system bleeder that is more of a pro shop tool. But yeah, Zach's the man.

Just a quick tip on e36 water pumps. When you are having trouble removing it there are 2 specific holes for this job on the left and right side on the water pump. You just need to screw 2 bolts directly to the block evenly and the water pump will come off. 10:26 The two dots that you see on either side are the hardened dedicated spots for this job. No need to hit it with a hammer or pry bar :D ....Awesome video like always !!!
do you have an up to speed on the Pontiac 6000 le⁉️
Can we do a video comparing the different types of catch cans? In most cases you want the catch can to route back into the intake (for the negative pressure). But there are cans that use a breather straight to the atmosphere. As well as cans that route back to the intake and ALSO have a breather to the atmosphere at the same time (which doesn't make much sense).
I did that, had an inline breather going back to the intake, cause me to throw IAC codes, but no performance change, took the breather out and no codes sense
@@SlaaneshiMook My thought is that once you throw a breather onto the system before the intake, you've negated the negative pressure. Might as well just vent the PCV to atmosphere at that point. But would be curious on Donut's take.
@@SlaaneshiMook Since*
The e36 'PCV' hose pumps oil vapor into the intake... remove the throttle body and look at all the puddles of oil on the bottom of the intake manifold. They may cause a 'DANGER TO MANIFOLD WELDS' message on your laptop. I have a small filter on the end of the shortened PCV hose ventin' to atmos because blowby air don't burn.
I don't think the negative pressure is the goal. If I understand it correctly these are just emissions systems rerouting partially combusted material back into the combustion chamber. The main concept of a catch can is to allow any oil that may blow through to not be able to just follow a tube back into the manifold. By having the tube enter a container (catch can) at the top and then having an exit on the other side at the top with a gap in the middle of the line, any oil that flows through the entrance will collect in the can instead of going back into the manifold. You can also eliminate the rerouting back to the manifold as long as you aren't blocking the PCV off entirely which would causes gasses to build up and find their own way out which is bad (pretty sure Zach did that on the Miata then added catch cans).
My E46 cooling system just failed so this is definitely going to get a rewatch when my parts come in.
I absolutely love this series
Wow, Zach has been busy handling two cars right now
Remember to always do some research on your specific vehicle and application before doing an electric fan conversion. Many cars love it with no issues or an improvement in cooling. But many do not and will often run hotter than before or even overheat completely without the factory engine fan and shroud. Well designed engine driven fans are often significantly more powerful than even the best electric fan setups, and while in some cars this is a waste of horsepower and engine response, in others it’s the only solution to keep the engine cool.
I can’t wait to see the final result
Finally, Ive been waiting so long for this video
YES MONEY PIT IS BACK! I’ve been waiting for weeks👏🏾
Ah yes the thermostat removal tool the most important part of any garage!
What a great content these guys are doing ✌️👏
There’s still a few plastic flanges and joiners to go before it’s all metal. Some you can bypass others you have to live with. I just finished a full overhaul of my e36’s cooling system. Every hose every joiner, I ended up bypassing my cars heater core as the 3 joiners that vent thru to the cabin are plastic joiners and become brittle over time. Wonder if you guys will come across this seeing the state of some of your other plastics. Also I’ve heard mixed things about the mishimoto radiators, some people love them some people say the quality just isn’t there. The stock radiator would probably have been okay with a bigger fan, they have a bleed screw too so all you need is a flat head and a few hours of free time to properly bleed your system. Love the videos guys 👌🏼
If Zach doesn’t drop a S65 into the E36 rally car, I might cry.
Please don't go to a lift setup, the best part of this series is seeing it done the way most of us could do it in our driveway.
