  • These grouse are pretty funny. My favorite is the Western Capercaillie. They think they're tough too, but they're a pushover like this one. Their defiance is rather charming, cute in a way. Who's that little revolutionary! George Grouse-ington, is that you? What a killer wittle guy.

  • Thanks for letting him go. A friend of mine had one follow him to his tree stand then perched on a branch next to him him and went to sleep while my friend was hunting from the stand. The grouse followed him through the woods to his car when he left. The same grouse (most probably) followed my friend's brother when he hunted from the same stand a couple of days later.

  • grouse (and most birds in general imo) are such fascinating and beautiful animals. Whenever I look at them a cant help but think of the millions of years of diversification and adaptation they've gone through since the non-avian dinosaurs bit the bullet. And now we are bigger and tougher than most birds. Funny how the tables turn like that over a few hundred million years lol

  • It's a Ruffed Grouse. Grouse are aggressive during lekking season. Of course his nearly turkey-sized Old World cousin, the Capercaillie would just step on him.

  • Wow, I've seen some dumb grouse, but that's a whole 'nother level. Nice catch and release.

    • Settlers apparently called them “fool hens” because they were so aggressive they’d attack anybody they found, making them easy to catch for dinner.

  • It's strange how the "dumb grouse" often get a pass in my book lol. We have a hen who has been hanging out around the house for about six weeks, can't bring myself to shoot her because my little girl loves seeing her.

    • Why would you shoot her anyway?

    • @@jeremypaluck4246 They are delicious. They are also rare. If you shoot and eat them all now, the north woods will never have as much charm, and future generations will never taste it's meat. That would be silly, wouldn't it? Its like the old "I'll give you two cookies in an hour if you don't eat the cookie you alreadt have" iq test.

    • @@notthatguy4703 I take only a few a year out here. I own 80 acres of untouched land, which is like a little sanctuary as more and more land is flattened and turned into fields for agricultural use each year. More often than not I've found myself just watching the grouse go about their business. In South Western Manitoba ruffed grouse are still somewhat plentiful, it's the sage grouse and spruce grouse that have become nearly extinct sadly, and neither of them are protected.

  • Had a grouse move in near my house, and it became super protective of the area due to a nest. It was hilarious for awhile but often I would have to come home with arms full of stuff and this thing would start pecking at my ankles. Needless to say the only thing I could do was make sure it understood that the porch was off limits by giving it a swift kick. Not something I am proud of but just pointing out these things will attempt to OWN whatever area they live in. It is a combination of amusing, sad and annoying.

  • I caught a Ruffed Grouse hen that was doing the wounded wing dance in the road in front of me as I walked my dog. About 15 keets gathered around the feet of my Dane. They are pretty dumb, it's a wonder the species survives.
