Capercaillie displays and attacks cyclist near Aviemore 2019 mp4

I was cycling alone in the woods near nethiebridge april 2019 when this cock buzzed me , stood on a post displaying for a few minutes, then chased me up the road . Every time I started walking away he came after me. Eventually i jumped on the bike and zoomed away and he did not fly after me.

    • They're super interesting. Such strangely aggressive animals in a non-aggressive way.

      @jenss.3613@jenss.36133 жыл бұрын
    • @@jenss.3613 Well, they are relatively nice to us, might slap you a few times, might even bite, but to other males they are super vicious and I hear they can even cause life-threatening injuries to each other sometimes, I'm sure that's not very common though, after all they still all treasure their lives and could wait till next year to come back stronger. The reason for such aggression is unlike most birds, the alpha takes ALL the females, so winning really matters a lot, quite opposite of doves and such birds, which are very calm because they all mate in the end pretty much and mate for life too, unlike these guys which chose mack-ing as their way of life, or I guess the females made that choice for them..

  • OK, I did a little reading, and found out that this is actually a type of grouse. The reason they reacted like that is because we're invading their territory, hence the male coming at you. Also, this would be time for mating season, so there might be females nearby.

    @DPS1194@DPS11943 жыл бұрын
    • Addendum: the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is the world's largest species of grouse, weighing up to fifteen pounds/ seven kilograms. Though that's too small to be truly dangerous to an adult human, they can be rather unpleasant, able to deliver a hard peck and a bruising wing-wack. I don't blame Mr. Acat for avoiding a clash.
