  • From USA - Thank you so much for these videos. Too many channels just jump all over and the process is unclear. In 4 years this is the VERY BEST casting detail ever! The sand, core, insert, and especially the hand painting and detailed cleaning of imperfections and the sealant application are very very useful and effective for really learning the details to create such high quality casting. I am hoping to purchase a foundry very soon, and I always felt that it was possible to create much better finishes. I am sure there are other videos out there, but this is the best one I have seen, especially the details of hand cleaning, brushing so carefully the sand, and then firing it before pouring. Even loading the scrap and seeing the different materials they melt. Of course the HBM milling and assembling the valves with the brass seals and diaphragm, you covered SO much without skipping the important parts, and I really appreciate the captions too. There are so many Chinese videos that skip or rush, and most Japanese ones are about very old hand crafted pieces, which is fine, but the combination of efficiency, quality, and the energy of Korean Industry has always filled me with inspiration. Again, thank you so much for this! Maybe you can come visit some day and share and collaborate on processes here. Thank You!! Joe

    • I share this sentiment as well, sometimes(most times) I just want to watch the process in full, with reasonable detail, without the fluff and the jumping around. Unfortunately, it's rare so this channel is a great find. Good luck with your foundry!

  • Thanks for another great "how it's made"! About coolant. It's usually water emulsion (mix of water and water soluble oil in correct proportions). And with cast iron it's used not just to cool tools and workpiece down, but to wash away cast iron dust that's generated in huge quantities. Because otherwise cast iron dust is a great abrasive and will start getting everywhere in the CNC machine, the ways, the bearings, etc, and to prevent that, the coolant is a must when working with cast iron.

    • @@AffordBindEquipment I mean, it might be cast steel, but cast iron also generates quite a bit of larger chips when drilling with a good feed rate. There was a lot of powder on surfacing operation before drilling, at least it seemed like that.

  • I appreciate this. I just had to have one of the backflow valves in my buildings fire sprinkler system replaced. It was a custom part as no more of the original existed. Knowing what goes in to simply the production humbles me. All this takes place after the design takes place. This is production scale. The fact our one-off was done in three months from designs is amazing. This was insightful.

  • Very cool! Getting the pattern made is a whole other part that it doesn't show (after valve design of course). I used to design patterns for this type of casting beginning with the 3d model (sometimes 2d drawings). It was actually very rewarding work designing the pattern and coreboxes. You have to consider how many you can fit on one pattern, account for shrinkage, use software to see how it will solidify when cooling, add coreprint for the core to sit in, apply the rigging and risers, add macbhine stock, and add draft so that the pattern will pull from the sand. Then the pattern is CNC machined out of a polyurethane material called Renshape. After machining, the patternmakers can apply the antishifts, sand down any machining lines, fill any holes that it was screwed to the wood for machining, and a lot more. After painting and sending to the foundry, we would get them back and machine them as you see here. Careful consideration can be needed to rig correctly during machining. I miss this work!

  • 14:56, 15:13 - looks like a relief bypass (or whatever they call it in English) - AFAIK before you are to close the valve completely, you open the valve on the bypass in order to reduce the force on the main valve - and once you close the main one, you close the small one on the bypass. At least that was what they told us back then in secondary school ("high school "in US).

    • Yes, when there is unequal pressure on the downstream side it can cause uneven pressure on the valve making it hard to open\close and causing wear. The smaller valve is easier to open so you can equalize the pressure on both sides

  • Nice work. I spent many years making valves of cast iron, steel, stainless steel for all sorts of oil, gas, pipelines... the last valve I worked on was for a refinery and had to work at 700 pounds pressure.

    • What Is the brown coating painting over pattern,. Thanks for your answer

      @oscorp641@oscorp641 Жыл бұрын
    • @@oscorp641 Just a thick ordinary paint to fill and smooth the pattern so it can be removed easily. In UK they tend to use a red paint like red oxide. Patterns have to be lightweight enough to be lifted easily so they are made of lightweight pine or similar softwood. But that wood has a very open grain that could cause the pattern sand to penetrate and stick to damage the sand when the pattern is removed.

    • @@shilparani8299 Lots of KZheads about machining valves and pressure testing them. So many kinds of valves so it's hard to be specific. Wedge gate, ball, flap etc etc. Small ones are made on cnc machines, bigger ones may be made on a vertical turret lathe or horizontal borer.

  • You should’ve shot your video at Masoneilan, in the US. Outstanding valves, been manufacturing them for decades. As far as the actuators that open/close these valves, REXA makes some of the best.

    • It doesn’t get any better than that using the same process. The only improvement That exists would be to do some of the castings using Kukas and whatnot to add some details, which they do in Germany for engine blocks
