This week, South Korea broke its own world record for the lowest birth rate in the world.
230,000 babies were born there last year, in a country with a population over 50 million.
But declining birth rates isn’t exclusive to South Korea, with the trend affecting numerous countries across the world - including the UK.
The BBC's Analysis Editor Ros Atkins has been looking into this.

It's very exhausting to work full-time outside the home and work full-time inside the home. This is the reality for a lot of women.
And men luv
@@MixologistMiloNot really. This is specially a widespread issue for women in countries with falling birth rates. In South Korea and Japan with the lowest birth rates, their brutal education and work sytems require women to work full-time as men do, but all work within the home is seen is seen as exclusively as a womens work. So both work equally hard, but childcare, cleaning, cooking, groceries, laundry, appointments are delegated to women, exclusively.
Yep, women are forced to do more then what we can complete. We are burned out
@@mspaint93 Well that'd explain the low birthrates in South Korea. But not in western countries where men do just as much housework.
@@MrNote-lz7lh But they don't do just as much housework, as a populous. You can look into the endless studies done on this where (again, on average) in a household with two full time working parents, the mother does the majority of childrearing and housework.

That and some ''help'' from the western diet and the jabs . But i have to mention some factors in nature the will infect to reproduce , less magnetic field , more cosmic rays and thats not the only effect on the life on the planet .

Also cultural issues in the west, I don’t believe this poverty leads to less children otherwise historically most of the world would have had low fertility rates but they didn’t, a large part of this is the fact that western cultures do not put emphasis on pride on one’s self and duty to bloodline whilst countries like Israel do.
You're right. It's so stressful to live a life because of inflation.
@@2trappy2Looking a bit more into Israel’s birth rate. It looks like it can mainly relate to the original comment. Israel has a few exceptional policies which make it easier to balance work/education and personal life. Also they fund fertility treatments which is huge for women who choose to have children later in life. So it seems making it so growing a family is a smoother experience really does contribute to stable fertility.
Declining birth rate means less slaves.
That’s why I think the republicans taking away women’s right, less slave labor if a women has a choice

The Baby Boom was engineered: Step 1: Create jobs that 1 parent can work, that cover the expenses of the entire family, and only require a High School education. Step 2: Create cheap starter homes than even 22 yr olds on their first job can afford. That is it, those 2 steps created the Baby Boomers. Today, we are in University accumulating debt for 4 - 8 years. Then we are paying outrageous rent while trying to save up for a first home. Nobody builds unprofitable starter homes anymore, and the average home price is so high as to require an intergenerational mortgage to finance. No kidding nobody is having kids. By the time you can afford kids financially, you can't have kids biologically.
So well said! You have summed it up perfectly.
Incorrect. The Baby Boom was a consequence of warfare concluding. Historically population growth increases after a long war, due to the returning number of fighting males to their settlements. You can NOT engineer growth, you can only engineer away from decline in the best of times.
Can you prove the baby boom was this engineered? Otherwise, BS.
Very good response
💯
it bothers me like hell whenever i hear male business leaders (ie. elon musk, tucker carlson) preach about we should have more babies when it is very obvious that they DID NOT have to do any of the work actually raising the kids and they DID NOT give birth to the kids.
They mean WHITE BABIES.
I've never heard Tucker Carlson say something like that without prefacing it with the relevant issues at hand like housing, low wages, and government disincentives.
Do you expect middle-class moms to stand in front of the world and present these insights instead? It doesn't matter who says it. They are discussing demographic trends and their implications.
I have heard women talk about how other people need to have more kids. That includes a rich, child-free lesbian businesswoman who said that other women should have more kids so that she will have more workers and customers.
honestly idk about tucker, but i do know elon procreates like a rabbit
I'd rather go through whatever bs this world is going through than worry about my hypothetical child going through it.
Oh I know. You are having a real hard time now, on youtube. It's tough man. That facebook isn't going to scroll itself, ya know.
Let's not forget the other reason why birthrates are declining, especially in Japan, South Korea and China, and that is the demands that employers put on their workers. You can't work people to death and expect them to have the time and energy to meet, date, marry and procreate. Who would want to bring a child into that climate?
Most of my Japanese friends only have one or two kids, but they want more, the only issue is that their husbands come home exhausted and don’t want to have sex at all. My girlfriends, when we get together, will talk about that often. Makes my heart hurt for them, because they rarely see their husbands at all, but when they come home it’s straight to bed, then straight to work.
Inflation is also the biggest factor, the reason some people not wanting to have more children is simple, MONEY! When you don't have enough money to sustain child care and your kid's college, parents are more likely to have 1 kid and that's it, 2 or more is already a challenge. Education, clothes and food to put in their mouth are the primary challenges to fulfill via money but gets reduced due to inflation.
I am a foreigner working in China. Chinese law stipulates that the working hours are a max of 40 hours per week. Many people want to work more and many do. Employers can be fined for forcing workers to do more hours than their contracts state and all workers have to be paid double their hourly rate for any hours worked over the limit.

As a 38 year old British man with above average income, I don’t even feel like I could afford to raise a child with any degree of certainty. I haven’t even bought a house yet. Half of my friends are in the same position. If politicians really care about this issue, they’d fix the housing crisis, the cost of living crisis, the economy and create some prosperity for their own citizens.
Are you in a committed relationship with a stable person? That's more rare than housing these days. IMO. My sister and I were discussing my cousin's choice of a wife. "She must look good in a swimming suit." quote from another cousin about our cousin My sister who had a baby that took a life flight to a neonatal unit said: that's what people should see when choosing a spouse cause you might end up in a place like that.
Same situation in the US. 37 yr old male, decent income, still can’t afford a home, let alone a family.
British man with above average income. Please travel the world. You will realise the problem you're having can be fixed somewhere else. I guarantee you that. Your income can make you a king somewhere in Africa, you just need to accept change.
@@TitusBiwot Way ahead of you 😏 I recommend this to people who feel trapped as well
You're in a better position to raise children than 99% of humans who have ever existed so I don't get what you're complaining about. My grandparents were raising children in a country where there was civil war. For me to say I feel uncertain about having children in 2024 Britain would be pathetic.
How are we supposed to start families when both men and women need at least 2 jobs just to not be homeless?
No problem. Bring in people from Sudan. They have nothing, but their average fertility rate is 4.5 children per woman. They will be homeless, but apparently they don't care 🤷♂

Thank you, finally some facts!! I suspect that gay people no longer being forced to hode in our closets and play straight probably has an impact as well. In the 50s it was common for gays to have to hide, and so they'd marry a woman and procreate, often with great disgust, whereas now we can be more or less free to live our liges and not ever have to touch a breeder.

@@nixonesport1998 someone that's not born can't be replaced
We can’t bloody afford to have kids. Have you seen the cost of living vs wages?
I dont understand why anyone sees a problem with lower birth rates. I see it from an environmental perspective... our overpopulation has already caused climate change and species extinction. Overpopulation is massively impacting wildlife and excelerating environmental decline. In the UK, we have a housing crisis which we can't build our way out of without decimitating our green spaces and overloading infrastructure and social facilities. A lower population is not just good, it's very essential.
Rich people will have fewer indentured servants so they're panicking.
The problem is in countries where there is a growing aging population, there aren't enough young people to support them, not just through taxes to pay their pension but also with all the services that old people need. It's becoming unbalanced in many countries. It affects the quality of your life if you live in a country with a declining population.
Mother nature is just correcting itself.
The issue is that you will have one grandchild per four grandparents. Elderly people can't work after a certain point, nor support themselves. You'll start seeing old people dying in the streets. Governments will become insolvent trying to support them. This kind of change is only bad because it's happening suddenly. If it happened over a couple centuries it would be a better thing. But not for it to happen suddenly.
A Lower population may be good but a declining population is not. See the difference?
No one wants to admit the real reason, we are no longer going to tolerate a difficult life. No one wants to STRUGGLE like everyone else in the past did
Once you have money, you don't want to ever be poor again.

For thousands of years, we didn't count humanity in billions, and our planet was better and healthier that way. We will survive in smaller numbers. Also, fewer people means less competition. The problem is our economic system - it can only endure with growth. So, we should change this greedy capitalism that doesn't care about humanity but only profit. It obviously isn't working and depression and unhappiness are hitting record levels. Plus, nothing can grow forever.
Declining birth rate means less overpopulation. Right?
we can hope...which should mean less demands on industry for supplying consumers ergo better environment. i mean holy crap, just look at any 5 "super foods" to see the awful conditions those workers are under and how little they get paid....acai berries would be better off unknown to most the world, with less people, less of these people would have to work such awful jobs.
Yes but it takes many decades to get there. By that time, us 8 or 9 or 10 billion might have already completely destroyed the environment.
It will take a very long time unless we cut all the medical supports to elderly.
Right. It's good news, although it won't impact us right away. The less people, the more resources, jobs, and opportunities.

If you’re not discussing work life balance, higher salaries or paid leave for new parents. You’re wasting your time talking about low birth rates.
Less pollution is a good thing.
They wouldn’t be declining if people could have their own house and live on one income like their parents could. We can’t start a family in rented apartment as it’s already hard to pay
By the time you can afford kids financially, you can't have kids biologically.
Precisely.
The births are declining in well off countries with strong economies. The poor countries where living conditions, healthcare etc are nowhere near the levels of the developed countries have no birth rate problems. That would indicate that the developed countries are too self centred to consider anything that would change their comforts like having a baby.
@@ubaldobezoari8652 I want to agree with you ubaldo, but there is a bit more. It also implies you need more to live in a developed country. Housing in some developed countries consumes 50% of income. Then people need transport to get to work. And most developed countries do not have the grandparents living at home providing free child care. Developed countries have modernized themselves out of having kids. So undeveloped countries will export their people to developed countries to make up the shortfall. This will be interesting to watch. I hope the world stays peaceful.
@@john_doe_not_found Perhaps. But in poor countries, having another mouth to feed is a giant impact. In the developed countries, having a baby means cancelling the Peloton subscription, some nail appointments, some facial treatments, keeping your car for a couple more years, and not going to Marbella, but Málaga for a couple of weeks.

The way some people talk about this, they make it sound like countries' populations will go extinct. I get the impression populations are just stabilizing after decades, arguably centuries, of growth.
its a bigger issue than you think. as the birth rate declines, the median age increases. an older population means less people that are at a working age, and more people requiring healthcare. and less working people means retirement age could increase, which is already happening in some countries. an older population also causes the society to think less long term. only voting for short term policies and not caring about the new generations
Italys and South Koreans countries actually might disappear.

@@lewis0705so capitalism will collapse - which I don’t even know why we’re fighting for it so much because it’s screwed most of us. But humanity is not going to go extinct
Even if we don’t go extinct certain nationalities and the “west” will be replaced by Africans and latin Americans. On a economic level fewer birth rates means fewer workers that means fewer money in the economy and results in deflation and in turn high unemployment and also probably means the elderly will be left to die alone (already happening) ect

Greatest news of the century.
Generally, it's the cost of living being so high that prevents people from having kids. My parents stopped after my sister because the cost of living in Canada is so high and that was 30+ years ago. With how bad it is now, and barely any support from the government - no one can afford to have kids. The cost of equipment (strollers, car seats, etc) and daycare (the lowest cost for daycare in my province is $1000 a month per kid) is so astronomically high that this is no surprise. Plus both parents are forced to work to make ends meet.
Personally, I wouldn’t be put off a child due to me worrying about feeding myself. The world is far too sad, dangerous. With everything happening now. I couldn’t bring life into this broken world. 😢
Don't focus on the bad, there's never been a better time in history to have kids! Child mortality is record low and life expectancy is record high! There's also lots to love about the world!
Unfortunately love doesn't pay the bills, and as much as you love your kids they can still end up homeless or starving
I dont want kids and I am not selfish. No thanks and most people I know feel the same way.
I’m the same way!! I never, ever want children and I hope I eventually find a wife who feels the same way. And whoever thinks it’s selfish to not have kids clearly doesn’t get that it’s not their business to tell us to be parents when we simply don’t want to!
@sirclassicalhou3650 there's quite a few women who don't want children. Nearly 60 and never wanted a child. Never regretted the choice
Don't care, I'll never have kids. Then I'll be dead!😂
It means nothing the only people it matters is the companies that want profits and you can't have profit with declining population.
We need a better distribution of wealth. It’s crazy that companies have so much and the majority in the world are struggling.
3Billion starving people, but people are bragging about trillion dollar companies and worshiping billionaires
Communism has been tested numerous times. It doesn't end well.
In 2007, the 3 richest people in the world were wealthier than the 48 poorest nations combined. In 2017, it was estimated that the richest 1% of people in the world had as much money as the other 99% of people combined. While the rich get richer and the poor get poorer it’s highly unlikely that there would be a better distribution of wealth under the current system of government. Even if everyone had sufficient money to live comfortably, there are many very serious problems threatening the existence of our beautiful planet and all life on it. World leaders have clearly shown that they are totally incapable of resolving these problems which just get worse with each passing day. The only solution is God’s Kingdom which is God’s heavenly government that will very shortly take over the rulership of the earth solving all of our problems once and for all. (Luke 4:43) It’s going to bring about wonderful conditions on earth. Every person will have his/her needs lovingly cared for. (Isaiah 65:21, 22) Tears of sorrow will be changed into tears of joy! (Revelation 21:4)
It'll NEVER happen- greed and corruption are endemic.
@@Jen-lg4hp I understand your pessimism. From a human standpoint things look hopeless, but our Creator has a purpose for our beautiful planet and all life on it, including us. Very shortly, he’s going to make drastic changes on the earth by removing all human governments along with greedy, corrupt people. (Daniel 2:44) At Proverbs 2:21, 22 he tells us, “For only the upright will reside in the earth, and the blameless will remain in it. As for the wicked, they will be cut off from the earth, and the treacherous will be torn away from it.” Also, Psalm 37:10, 11 says, “Just a little while longer and the wicked will be no more; you will look at where they were, and they will not be there. But the meek will possess the earth, and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace”. The future will be much different from what most people expect. It will be wonderful!

The low birth fertility rate for women in Korea means very little- the data should be segregated to those who choose not to give birth and those who can’t. The former is a victory for women’s rights, and a subject for further anthropological studies. Only the latter should be addressed as a gap in the policies. The ‘low fertility rate’ discourse assumes that all women should or wants to give birth, which is not true.

Lower birth rate= decreasing global population, which equates to more resources per capita and less competition for economic opportunities and less need for further urban development/less need for destruction of natural habitat. Sounds like a W all the way around.
Looks like we will have to finally move on from capitalism.
Does it really take a rocket scientist to figure out that lack of housing, lack of jobs, stagnant wages, skyrocketing inflation, sub-par education, pricey daycare, galloping energy costs, soaring food costs, crumbling medical care, no dental care, the disintegration of the family unit, high taxes, and lack of real prospects, never mind the political instability created by the self-entitled 2x4s in power and the wars they create, might not have something to do with declining birth rates in advanced countries--UK included? Just a thought...
No shit… how can you raise a family earning average uk salary of 27k annually
That 27k figure doesn’t represent the average person either. It’s heavily skewed by the handful of people makes over £80k. Most younger people would be lucky to take home £24k after taxes.

Many come from broken families and it affects the mental health of a number of children.
There are clear problems and challenges brought about by population decline.
Well ur presupposing a healthy age demographic.
A declining population isn't the issue. An increasing dependency ratio is. No one would want to be forced to work at 70+ years old with back pain and arthritis when there's not enough young people to keep the country from collapsing.
@@Muhammad_Nuruddin There's plenty of pros and cons that come with an increasing or decreasing population. It's not as though all population decline will be spread evenly.
