Complete Suspension Refresh on the S52 E34 | Coilovers, Control Arms, and Subframe

2022 ж. 25 Шіл.

I accidentally edited this before the 4 "post first swap" issues fix video so I apologize for the order, but today I tackle the E34's suspension in preparation for the cross country trip. So we install Coilovers, bump steer plates, new control arms, thrust arms, rear subframe bushings, and dog bones! We're going to get this thing riding like new! AND we get the HRE wheels fitted!

  • Great content Josh. I have, on my 95 525i, done everything you did - except the rear SF bushings and standard struts rather than coilovers - also on the garage floor. I was sore like you (maybe more 'cause I am old) but happy with results. Still driving great 3 years later. Looking forward to your trip; hope you can hit NV-UT-CO on I-15 and I-70 either way (but I think Eastbound is best scenery direction). Also suggest I-80 to SF, then I-280 to CA17 to Highway 1 through Monterey and Big Sur (classic drive!) to 101 through Santa Barbara to LA. Lots of other awesome curvy and scenic drives in CA but only so much time!

  • I upgraded the upper control arm bushings to polyurethane ones, mine were shot to hell. Had my lower ones replaced with Lemforder units back in 2018, they're still in perfect condition. Rear subframe rebuilt as well, used Strongflex yellow bushings for the subframe itself, it's pretty much the same as Powerflex. Btw I love your e34 content, just wished it was a little longer heh.

  • Nice trick for the rear bushings....I dropped my back end and they were a PITA had to cut and burn them out. I also replaced the diff bushing and the other rear end peices. Did all this when lowering on GC Coil overs and swapping the sway bars. Will say this just like anything else the fisrt go around is a royal pain but once you have done it it rather easy

  • I do subframe bushings with a map gas torch, takes about 1 minute per side to get em out. Best investment ever, honestly. As somebody that works on cars in the midwest, you should invest in a good torch, heat is your best friend for freeing up corroded/seized things.

Personally I don't like the wheels, but the car its self looks great. Nice stance, great colour, amazing bodywork for the year. Brings back fond memories of my old E34 which I expect will have bit the dust some time ago now.

Rears are 11" wide and i have to get adapters for them, so the ET is going to be around 20. Do you think there is any chance to make them tuck without too crazy fender work? The car will be on air suspension. Love the content!

  • I never liked BC's either. I have ridden in probably 20 cars over the years with the $1000 option. I mean, they are fine, but severely overpriced for what they are. There is not much difference in ride or performance over $500 generic Ebay ones. You pay double because BC spends a lot of money on making KZheadrs talk about them, and being on the side of FD cars. They are chinese coilovers in fancy boxes.

  • Love your YT, great to see someone taking liking to the E34. Looks like your are in Hindsdale, IL? I use to live in Lansing, IL. You might know some of my people Question for you? I used to be really heavy into the BWM's especially the e34. Had a blk/blk 95 525i 19" ACS Type 3 rims staggered on coil overs w/ s50/5-speed swap but never got around to installing the Garrett T-5 Turbo. I remember this car like the back of my hand. Life took over kids and all, now finally have time to commit to other things and was looking buying another e34 again as I really dont want to mess with ODB-II cars. Have you had any issues gettin gparts especially mod parts? I have looked around and seem like things like exhausts, headers, CAI's, ground effects. (Old 95 had a full AC Schnitzer Kit, even had the smaller steering wheel) Thoughts on where are you finding all your e34? Looking for another 95 (like the wide grills) Blk.Blk or Red/Blk would love to do the swap again and turbo it as I still have the T-5 and all the parts for it. FYI - These guys are great for parts - specializedgerman.com/ they were downt he road from me when I was living in Cali and found a lot of aftermarket parts I was able to pull...ie RD Sway bars and cross brace.
