    • I had to chop off my hair (verrrrrrrrry similar but mine is even denser, looks almost identical long, but mine is "wider") once it grew truly long, I just could not figure out how to take care of it. I don't feel so bad now, I can admit I am just not up for the work & planning. I have a "puffball pixie" right now because the last stylist cut the angle wrong and it doesn't want to curl, it wants to make a puff. I'm queer, I'm pretty androgynous, I could easily do a lesbian fauxhawk with what I've got right now, but it's just so much icky gel...

    • I let my natural grays grow out and it has been an adventure to say the least. The texture is totally different from my fine, straight hair of my youth. I do only wash once a week but I’m very interested in trying your other methods for working with your texture. I feel like mine is a mix of everything but my biggest foe is frizz. I live in Louisiana and the humidity is insane. Do you leave your hair down at night while sleeping? I currently put mine in a silk scrunchy but maybe that’s not good.

  • I do all of these except rule #1. Weekly shampooing just doesn’t work for me. A lot of beauty influencers talk about “training” and after years of trying I can say my hair and scalp have learned nothing 😅 I have a very oily skin type and very fine hair. Even with dry shampoo I can only get to 4 days and it’s looking pretty rough by then. I’m glad I gave up on trying to force a weekly shampoo routine because I feel at peace now and my hair is so much better.

    • Same. For me with European sebum rich straight hair, washing 2x a week is a actually a big win. It is better than washing it every day like I did in high school ~ as in it doesn’t strip my hair and make it more greasy.

      @wplants9793@wplants9793 Жыл бұрын
    • Same. I wash 2x a week at the absolute minimum and when I am training for road races it's way more than that.

      @emilyjensenius4289@emilyjensenius4289 Жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. You can train your hair out of being greasy if it’s greasy BECAUSE you’ve overwashed it but if you’re just oily skinned you can’t train it. It just is oily.

      @ParticularlyChar@ParticularlyChar Жыл бұрын
  • One thing to note about frequency of washing: Your hair texture and density definitely makes a difference. Even after progressively spacing out washes to “train” the scalp to be less oily, people with thin, fine hair (like me) will still need to wash more regularly. My hair looks so much more full with freshly washed hair. Even after years of trying to space out shampooing, I can’t seem to go past day 4 without looking like Gollum lol

    • GOLLUM LOLLLL But yes this exactly!! thickness and density are absolutely key. I have a dense head of hair so it takes quite a while for my hair to air dry, but the strands themselves are VERY fine so I can't go without at least some help from dry shampoo and a boar brush by day 3.

    • Yes, my hair is the same way. I spent months trying to "train" it several years back and ended up with all kinds of scalp issues. I just use a very gentle shampoo and conditioner daily instead. The plus side is that I can wear my hair however I want to daily. I don't have to worry about babying the shape or denting it with pins. Everyone's gotta do what works for them!

    • This is me too! I have quite a bit of hair but each individual strand is on the thinner side, so while I don't need to wash every single day, four days is already pushing it for me. Every two or three days seems to work best

  • I prefer to experiment with my hair texture and color, but how you describe embracing your natural hair is how I feel about embracing my natural face. When I realized that I don't find makeup fun and indeed found that it was causing the problems it claimed to solve (for me), it was so liberating. And cheap! It's such a balancing act-- not changing our bodies out of a sense of obligation while also not moralizing naturalness.

After that I don't brush it until next wash (1.5-2x a weak, allergies). Only exception would be if something knotted it too much, then I'll detangle it gently with fingers.

  • For the kinds of hair issues referenced in the video and the comments, I also recommend one of those silicone pointy hair massagers when you shampoo. Has made a big difference to my scalp (not itchy anymore for one thing) and improved hair volume, thickness and bounce. Nice that it’s an object that doesn’t get used up as well.

  • As someone with loose wavy / curly hair I always recommend finger combing once hair is dry and to always rewet hair after brushing or combing , it gives my hair a chance to reclaim its shape . However I am also someone who cannot go without washing my hair , the texture is just tooo fine up top and the bottoms get way too tangled.

    @onipot9639@onipot9639 Жыл бұрын

  • I loved this video and seeing your rules! It's difference to other videos is that it's less about buying myriad products and the rigamarole of styling, but of listening to, understanding and working cooperatively with one's own unique hair situation. And I think it's incredibly thoughtful and intentional to not mush and smush your hair too early in the week! Like it makes sense not to ruin the shape too early, and save that for later in the week.

    @jadedxserpent@jadedxserpent3 ай бұрын
  • I found that experimenting with not only hair products but hair length was really important for me. I love a lot of long hair looks but I really have to wrestle with my hair if it gets longer than chin length, and the mediocre results of my long hair aren't worth the effort. My hair is better and healthier short, and I've come to really appreciate that!

    @mlhguitar6444@mlhguitar6444 Жыл бұрын

Because in elementary school my mom would brush my hair into a poof, then in middle/high school I straightened my hair almost every day and continued to straighten my hair until I just couldn't be bothered. Now I wash my hair once a week and timing is key because my hair without heat could take all day to dry in winter 😅

  • My hair is an enigma to me 😆. I have very fine hair, but a ton of it. It has some natural wave to it and I’ve always been fortunate that it can handle just about any cut because it will just fall nicely. However …. it mystifies me. It will NOT hold a curl when I use heat of any kind. I have tried the lowest settings. No go. The best curls I can get with heat tools is with a flat iron set to the highest setting, which on mine is just under 500. Yes. 500. I know. But even then, the curls won’t last the day. The only thing that works is heatless curling methods (I tend to do a version of the robe tie wrapping method) or putting it up in a few buns overnight. Even on dry hair these methods work for me. Curls and volume for days. Baffling. It also takes ages to dry with a blow dryer, but if I just play with my hair and keep spreading it out with my fingers, it will air dry pretty quickly. I mean, what? Is my hair allergic to heat?!? I can’t go an entire week without shampoo, BUT what I did figure out is that it’s just the front section of my hair that gets super gross, probably because of oils from my face and the fact that I cannot stop fiddling with my bangs. So, I only wash that section when it gets untenable and the rest of my hair is fine. I can’t use dry shampoo. Tried so many. They make the situation 10x worse. They’re like an oil attractor instead of an oil sucker upper on me. Because my hair is so fine, I have to brush it every day or it’s a rats nest of tangles. But I only do it at night. The whole 100 strokes thing. And then I put it up in a bun or do the wrapping thing and overnight it seems my hair absorbs the excess oils and by morning it’s fine. In the morning I only need to lightly de tangle with my fingers and it’s good to go. I don’t use much product in my hair either because none of them work, really. (Again, baffling). Except a texture spray I found that magically does miraculous things for my hair style. It took a long time to get to the point of being able to only wash all of my hair once or nearly once a week. But it’s been worth it. I have way less fall out, my scalp is less irritated, and I can afford to buy really good shampoo because a bottle lasts me so long now. What funny animals we humans are lol. So much fussing with the hair. But getting it right is EVERYTHING!! ❤

  • Totally appreciate that this is what works for you and you’re just sharing. However, studies have shown air drying may cause more damage than blow drying with low heat bc length of time of damp hair is correlated to damage. Also, for many people, washing only once a week causes scalp issues and definitely contradicts advice from dermatologists. For many, cleaning their scalp regularly- not just with water is the key to healthy scalp and hair. Also piling on dry shampoo is terrible for the scalp on a daily basis.

  • Great tips! I also have thick (dense) and coarse hair. I'd not heard of the wolf cut before and I am tempted! My challenge is that I get very hot, I live in southern Spain and I am very fair, so I like to wear a hat a lot to keep the sun off my face. This means my hair gets flattened, and I put it up in a pony tail or a bun A LOT to get it off my neck so I feel the breeze! I do use a very similar hair tie to the nylon one you have. I used to use the curly plastic one, but they would stretch out so fast and become useless, that I gave up on them.

  • I basically do all of these as well! Also, have a shag right now. You were definitely my hair inspiration! As a fellow wavy girl, I purposefully pull all of my hair into a high (very loose) ponytail while I sleep. I must be a crazy sleeper, but I always end up flattening my hair when I sleep. In the morning I just give it a good shake when I take it out and I have a ton of volume. :)

  • I have the opposite hair to you - very fine, super straight and not that much of it! I usually wash my hair every other day and have tried training my hair with little success. Although I didn't try using just water so I might try again at some point. My hair also gets knotty very easily so I do brush it before and after I wash it. And for me I think my hair looks best if I sleep on it wet/damp as it gives it a little bit more volume! (Plus as I don't have that much hair I find it tries pretty quickly).

  • That was helpful, thank you, our hair textures and hair philosophies are remarkably similar. The most helpful thing was your emphasis on gentleness. • This has been so helpful! I've always felt a little silly for how careful I am not to handle my hair, lest I disturb my natural texture and wave pattern - the waves seem to fall out as soon as I touch it. Its so reassuring to hear you describe how gentle you are with yours. I especially loved hearing "the ideal version of the hair that I have". That was inspiring :) I would love to know how you wear your hair when you sleep? Or if you might have a video touching on this already? My hair sounds very similar to yours, and the only way I've managed to maintain the shape while I sleep is to put it in a loose bun on the very top of my head, secured with a big, fluffy scrunchie. But no matter how gently I try to secure the bun, the weight of having my hair up always leaves my scalp feeling sore by morning. Thanks so much, your videos are all so fun and relaxing.

I’ve been trying to figure out a better hairdo schedule to work with my weekly wash and this is exactly what I needed. • As someone with very long, healthy hair, I want to say how important it is to stay away from heat and bleach, if you can. My hair is past my knees, and has been for several years now. It is thick and wavy, which makes it easier to wash and go. I also only wash once or twice a week. No more than that. May try going down to once a week only, and doing the water rinse for the second wash. Excellent idea. I don’t use an expensive shampoo or anything, I use dove with some bio silk afterwards. That’s it. ❤

  • This is a weird one but I clip my hair 1/2 up while it dries (I’ve got fine hair but a lot of it and it takes forever otherwise.) Gets those under layers dry faster and less scalp stress. I could do 8-10 days when I lived in the desert, but now in a more humid place (plus I have a sweaty job), I’m at like 4-6 I think. I wish I could avoid hair up for the first half of the week, but for others that can’t- a loose french braid is where it’s at :). Stands up to hiit and handstands and so forth but doesn’t leave you with that single-crease look lol. Weirdly new wash never worked for me, even in the desert! I was much happier when I realized what my hair wanted was actual soap, but less often.

I've been using one of those thick wide-toothed "shower combs" after washing and while I don't think it's done any damage, I'm curious to see if my texture (which I always thought of as "straight with body") is actually a bit more wavy/piecey than combing lets it be . . . definitely going to experiment with this one!

  • there are so many factors to one's hair - e.g., hair usually needs to be cared in a different way after dying but it depends on the amount of hair impacted, whether there was any bleaching, were there chemical or physical pigments. then there's a percentage of gray hair, the base tone of natural colour, texture, volume, thin/thickness, seasons, climate, water quality, lifestyle, habits, tools used etc.

  • Been following your hair method for years, though I've never been disciplined enough to manage to get my hair completely dry before bed. I've found that using an air dry mousse right after I wash my hair, helps my texture come up and it forms a slight cast on the hair to keep it lifted and piecey a bit longer. I could never do Nuwash because I color my hair, but I just use a color-safe shampoo that my stylist recommends.

  • I only comb through with a wide toothed comb right after the shower to get my hair into the position i want. Brushes are too harsh on my hair, but i also have very very short curly hair and need to brush it in the mornings to separate the pieces enough to look normal, then spray it with water and maybe use a bit of hair oil to sort of get my curls on the right path again. Very quick though with short hair, about 4 brush strokes for my whole head and little product. Just a little bit of hair oil is when it looks the most healthy. Going several days between shampoo washes really does help with oil though

  • I did not think about what pulling my hair in a ponytail and daily brushing will do to my waves.😮 With the washing though, I really have to wash every other day. My scalp itches so badly by the day 3. And I have tried many times over the years to switch to less frequent washing. There is a naturally occurring yeasts that lives on our scalp and have a tendency to overpopulate fast for some people. So, I have to reduce the number by washing or the scalp will be irritated.

  • Whether or not you can do the washing once a week thing depends on your hair type. This will generally work for thicker and coarser hair, but this will not work if you have fine hair. I know some curly people who go a week without washes, no problem, but this generally is not going to work for the thin, pin straight hair types

  • I have fine (texture), full (# of follicles), straight hair. I always wanted curly, bold hair. I used to perm it but as I learned the hard way you can only perm over top of a perm so many times before your hair becomes translucent - lol. That was when I embraced my straight hair and tried different lengths, cuts, colours, etc. I wash my hair as little as possible but I'm pretty sure it's more often than you do simply because i have a different texture. I rarely brush my hair. Usually just before I wash it or if I'm putting it back. I agree that to much 'vigor' can bend and shape (in a bad way) your hair and thus don't use heavy handed restraints unless I expect to wash or wet my hair afterwards. Because my hair is not prone to split ends or being overly dry, I use conditioners only sporadically. If I condition too much my hair tends to be limp and lifeless. I currently have mouse brown hair that is greying that I have dyed dark purple and black. It's cut into a shoulder length shag that I'm growing the bangs out as well. In order to get the volume I like on top I do use heat regularly (blow dryer, flat iron) but this really isn't an issue as my hair is pretty resilient. Great video and thanks for having he courage to face all those who seem to be freaked out about some of your hair rules. I think they're awesome!!

I have very fine hair and it just doesn't have enough natural volume to last any longer than that. But my hair and scalp overall have never felt better. No itchy scalp and my hair (eah strand) actually feels denser! I can't say I abide by the rule about heat styling... I do not like how my hair air dries. It looks stringy and limp and not at all what I'm going for 😂

  • I got a spiral perm twice in my late 20’s. The first fell out in less then two months. I asked my hairstylist why that was. She said, if you have a perm, never brush your hair. I was a bit unsure, but she was the professional, so when I got the second perm, I didn’t brush it. A year and a half later I still had relaxed curl at the end of my hair. It was pretty, but it was killer on my scalp, so I never did it again. I went for over twenty years without even owning a brush. I gave away my diffuser and blow dryer too. Now my hair is changing. So is my scalp. The cow licks are prominent. It’s flyaway. It’s dry and breaks easily. And the scalp eczema is very uncomfortable. I’m finding it very difficult to find a hair product that doesn’t strip my hair, weight it, or aggravate the eczema. I’ve been to the dermatologist about this. Their prescription was so harsh!! For years, I’ve only washed it twice a week, maybe three times if I did a dirty sweaty job. I have the same basic rules you do. Even the stretching a wash with vinegar. I’ve started putting coconut oil on my face on day two between showers. I put the excess on my hair. It seems to be slowly helping it calm everything down. So I highly recommend it! Thanks for the great content!

  • I think not coloring your hair and getting regular trims are the best thing you can do for your haircut. Washing is very personal. I have fine, medium density, very curly hair. Oil doesn’t run down my hair easily, even when I distribute it. I let my hair tell me when it’s ready for shampoo by checking to see if it is flat at the root or gunky or snarly. Depends on the season, whether I am indoors or out a lot, sweat level and headgear worn. Could be 3 days or maybe 10.
