  • This argument always makes me think of the time when Takahiro Omori won the Classic years ago. He went to this place where the water was muddy and there was a little bit of current, and he just was there on pure instinct- His instincts were screaming at him where to fish, and he went with his instincts- there were NO ELECTRONICS to tell him there were some hawgs up in that brush- He had years and years of dedication, years and years on the water, he had turned his brain into a bass finding computer- and on that day his brain had figured them out better than anyone else- And when he set the hook on that huge hawg that nailed his crankbait- He kept saying over and over ¨I knew it!!!! I knew it!!! I knew the fish would be here!¨ So here is the tragedy- The joy and the thrill that Takahiro felt on that day when he FIGURED OUT where the fish would be and then he won the classic- These guys now days will never experience a thrill like that in bass fishing...Without those stupid machines they probably couldn´t even catch a bluegill with a cricket and a bobber. Gimme 1985 anyday- Bill Dance versus Roland Martin Versus Tom Mann versus Jimmy Houston... That was REAL BASS FISHING! They had those slow crappy boats with a flash unit- and they knew MORE about bass fishing than these modern pros will ever understand, period! • It really sucks that FFS is allowed in the High School Bass Association Tournaments as well. We dont have one and there are a few other kids that dont have one. We dont even have a chance compared to all the other kids whose dad has the FFS. We were on Rayburn a couple weeks ago in the tournament and all you seen is people standing on the front of their boats staring at a screen trying to catch deep water fish. Just ridiculous. Its not that Im ticked I dont have one, I just dont think it should be allowed in High School. Not all kids can afford to have FFS setup. Make these kids all fish on a level playing field. At least at a minimum, have FFS allowed tournaments and FFS not allowed tournaments. I would like to see all these anglers bring in the fish they catch without FFS. It wont happen.

  • When people say just because you see them on FFS doesn't mean they will bite are wrong. Scott Martin proved that at the tournament at Lake Okeechobee where he chased down this big bass for 1hour until he caught it. Instead of it being a reaction bite it was an irritated bite. • Ray Scott is rolling in his grave. How can you ban things like the number of lines on the water at one time, the maximum allowable rod length allowed, the number of hooks allowed on an Alabama rig, etc, but yet you can have 7 giant graphs and 12 different transducers ? What’s next using drones over flats with range finders or using underwater drones with cameras so you can count how many fish are on a structure and confirm their the correct species and size ? I totally agree Randy that the guys winning now are mostly talentless hacks. It’s like a Sim Racing driver competing against an actual professional driver in a real car on a real track. In reality they’re not even close in terms of talent. Fishing is being dominated by lazy gamers right now NOT professional fisherman.

Not a single one of us have any chance at cashing $100,000 checks 6-9 times a year. Not a single one of us rely on this to put food on the table. If you’re a recreational fisherman, buying a $100,000 Ikon/Cat/Vexus/Phoenix/FXR. You’re either filthy rich, have money to blow, use it as a tax write off, or care too much about what people think. If you’re a rec fisherman with 6x 12”-16” graphs on your boat, you’re outside your needs. You don’t have to buy a LX21, VX21, 921 elite, FXR21, F21 Predator etc. i have a ‘20 F195 Falcon, with 2 helix 10s at the console that came on the boat, a helix 10 and Garmin 126 with LS at the bow. The boat has 28hrs on it when i bought it in ‘21 and I paid 56k for that boat. I had a ‘97 Sprint 286 before that. My truck is a 2015 Silverado. And i have a bunch of boxes of ol monsters, jigs, crank baits, and creature/craw baits. I’ve cashed in $3k-$8k checks out of both boats. MULTIPLE 30lb+ bags, With and without LS, on a $4 pack of Junebug ol monsters, and some cheap ass strike king foot ball jigs. Again, if someone is rec fishing, and spending that kind of money, that’s their own decision… kinda like the pros that use FFS, nobody makes you do that. Period.

    • Watching bassmaster for hours on end is not a comparison to what you may have watched in the past. You used to watch a one hour show loaded with fish catches. Would you consider watching an angler go jig fishing for several hours where you might get six bites all day. I consider Blaukat as a knowledgable fisherman who has much to offer but he is the one who used to jump over logs and load his boat with water to enter areas that would normally be off limits. Thus the rules were changed to prevent this from happening. The one thing that FFS has proven is that 90% of the fish are behind you if you are casting towards the shore, something that Elwood "Buck" Perry brought forth more than fifty years ago.

  • It was pretty fun to see these pro's setups ... it's all about efficiency for them. The reason they all have so many graphs is that they want to dedicate a graph to a single function. Each graph is dedicated to do8ng only one thing so they have one for FFS, one for mapping, one for 360. They are also running multiple transducers so they don't have to constantly switch between them. Is it truly necessary? Not really it just makes things easier for them. You don't see recreational anglers doing this. We just have 1 or 2 graphs on the console and 1 or 2 on the bow and just switch modes between them when we need to use different modes. The world of bass fishing does not revolve around pro tournaments. The fact that 200 guys have $30k of electronics on their boat is pretty much meaningless to the rest of the 5 million bass fisherman in the US ...

I fish because I love it and grew up with it, but I still feel like fishing has gotten exceedingly worse since FFS became more and more popular. I live on the Potomac River. Occasionally MLF tournaments will come by and blow up all my spots and I sit there and shake my head at them all staring at their screens, taking away healthy chunks to weigh in somewhere else, where the fish will inevitably die from the stress of being in a live we’ll all day.

  • I have been a fisherwoman for many years. Creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, banks, docks...and I mean I had a rod in my hand when I was 2 years old and fish 2-3 times a week in all seasons and in all weather. Fishing is in my DNA. My uncle was a charter boat captain on Lake Erie and Lake Michigan and on our journeys fishing, he taught me many many things. One thing he taught me, radar will never be as good as your experience on the water. He said never rely on it to find fish as it will not produce the biggest, best fish. He used his instincts to find fish for his clients. And used radar only to find depth. So as I grew, his advice stayed with me. I have fished boat, kayak, and wade. I have flied, baitcasted, spin fished. Hell, I went noodling once. I have climbed rocks in sketchy situations in remote regions to find large fish. And over the years, I have learned to read water, judge weather, read each species and their behavior and find the fish. I never had sonar, refused all electronics though I could afford it for my kayaks and judged depth by how fast my sinker or spinner dropped to hit bottom. I dragged the bottom with my rod and could tell you what I was hitting. Did I spook em, sure....don't care, still caught em. That's how I trained myself. So fast forward.....I actually considered maybe joining a kayak tournament to challenge myself more with no aspirations other than to challenge my skills on paper: and I started watching videos and was SHOCKED to see the electronics on these boats and kayaks in the pros. I have no doubt these pros are great anglers. But you couldn't tell given all the gadgets they have on their boats to try and find fish. I'd be upset if this was required of me in a tournament. I actually think I would fail miserably if I relied on a screen to find fish. I think I would catch less fish. Fish can sense those sound waves in the water. How do I know this: I fished near a bass boat one day in a tournament. He scooted up behind me. No matter. I am used to it. I was raking those bass in while that angler on the boat was getting pissy staring at me catching "his" fish. I said to him, fish can hear, and sense sonar vibrations at certain depths. That's a fact. And they are driven away from it in many cases. My uncle had to shut down his sonar during fishing sessions because of it. I said are you using sonar, he said yes. I said stop and you might have more luck. And I told them you're spooking them over to me. Thanks. He sped off. I have no idea who he was.....but I don't think he won. But that day, I sure did. Best day I had bass fishing on a lake in awhile. I lost count how many bass I caught. All because those boats were spooking the heck out of those fish to safer zones like under trees and rocks and far away from sonar. And this lake was used to boats, but not these fancy bass boats with all the sonar. I feel bad for the anglers in the pros if they are forced to do this. I'd be bored out of my mind doing it. And, I'm convinced it hurts them. Something should change for their sake. They want to fish, not stare at screens. Great topic and I hope someone looks at this from a logical perspective and not with dollar signs in their eyes. Should it be banned.....absolutley....but not because of a fair chase situation but because I think they would do better without all of the sonar.

Every veteran he interviewed either said they wanted to go back to fishing or, they clearly were uncomfortable having it in their boats. Plus, the vets had the least amount on the boats. • There is also a generational swing aspect to this as well. It's been described as video game fishing. A lot of these new pros likely play video games. I do feel for the vets of the sport here.. From a recreational aspect. I do have live scope, of course not at anywhere near the magnitude of $40,000. I enjoy using it but I also use it in a little different manner where I have pre mapped waypoints and do not use it to find fish. I just use it to see if there are fish at my mapped locations once I get to them. As a recreation fisherman who only gets to go pretty much on the weekends, it has cut down on fishing a lot of dead water. I can say from watching Toledo Bend it is not exciting to watch, but that would change if they actually ran a split screen to where you were actually seeing the live scope screen, rather than just the back of the angler's head.Looknfornthat change to come quickly... The other aspect that this will affect in a big way are co-anglers. Outlawing these for recreational fishing is just not realistic unless the companies do a full buyback on equipment, which will never happen. I do completely understand and respect your stance on this from a professional angler standpoint. Unfortunately, like everything else in the world, it's all about the benjamins, advertising, and sales etc...
