Here’s an easy and cheap gate system to keep small things in your yard or out of it.
A piece of 1 ¼ inch PVC pipe fits well over a 1 inch galvanized piping. It is rustproof, light and doesn’t scratch. It may be any height or width.
The metal pipe is driven into the ground and the PVC slides over it. The PVC rotates on the metal post to act as a hinge for the gate.
The gate frame is also made of PVC that is assembled with glue or stainless steel screws.
The plastic fencing or fiber screening is attached to the frame with plastic zip ties.
Anchoring the gate closed is simply a screw in the ground or a long nail.

I love watching these videos but your's is the best!!!! I'm going to make it tomorrow for my dogs. It's perfect for my backyard. Thank you for sharing.
This is the brilliant, simple and cheap solution that I have been looking for. It is intelligently designed and the video is very clear and easy to understand. Thank you.
Perfect. This! will solve several garden and chicken problems for me. Thank you
I watched your video and ended up installing 2 gates per your instructions, 5 feet wide by 6 feet high. They are perfect for what I needed, inexpensive, and so easy to make. Thank you Mr. Hardware!
thank you, exactly what I needed. Been trying to come up with something for 2 weeks. Need to get into a garden area to tend to plants but need to keep the dogs out. Thank you so much
Wow, If I could like this more than once, I would! Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
Thank you Mr Hardware,I"ve made two from your design for the garden and painted them Green...
Omg!! I’ve been looking all over for something like this! Thank you sooo much
Excellent!! Even granma can make this doggie gate 🐶💜🌈
Great idea. Thanks for sharing. I will do the same with my chickens next spring
Thankyou so much for sharing! I have been looking for an idea for months like this!!
You're a genius!!
You just solved a problem for me. Up North, in the wintertime, any gate is totally useless, any? Not yours. By having a long Galvanized post, the gate can go up with every inch of snow Mother Nature sends us!
Thank you for sharing! Going to try this idea.
You are a genius, sir! Thank you for sharing!!!
This is frikking brilliant! Thank you for sharing.

Pretty nice view you got there
Thanks, it took a lifetime of remodeling to finally end up here. I always have a second home as a hobby to transform from mundane to something I love. At 65 I'm at the end of my run, time to enjoy life.
Awesome idea!
Thanks, it works well for us. Blair
I love it!
You are a genius. Thank you x100000000
Thank you so much gonna make one as some vandals took my pretty one.....
Cool Idea
Nice Job,,,Thanks!
Thank you!
It is the best video i have ever seen very simple and easy to assemble thank you. I did it as a garden gate very practical but I need to put hooks on the side what type do u recomnend me with the pvc pipe? I need a very simple one. Thank you again for your answer..
If you cannot put a pin in the path to hold the gate at the bottom you can use a long hook and eye, or a short rope that can hook on the building or from the building to the gate. Blair
Thank you sir
Where i live wood and especially palette wood is ridiculously expensive.you can easily pay 15 bucks per plank, its insane!!!
This is great! Do you have any suggestions for what to use as a gate stop for larger gates in this style? I'm thinking of making one 3-4' tall and 3-5' wide, and I'm concerned that a single tapcon won't be enough to keep my dog from pushing it open. Thanks!
Use a longer tap con or another salve anchor that may stick in the air 1 inch or even 2 inches. Now you have to lift the gate a little higher to get off of it but your dog probably won’t be able to open it.
Very Nice
Finn and I thank you.
Exactly what I was looking for to keep my ducks in their pen but give me access. thanks.
Great video! I wonder how deep you had to drive that metal pipe?
About 24" should do it. Blair
Smart
Can I do this at a larger scale? It seems cheaper and easier than making a wooden gate. Does the gate have to be squared shape or could it be rectangle shape? The alleyway that connects my front yard to my backyard is about 12 inches wall to wall.
The gate can be any shape you need. You will need to add a cable diagonally from the top hinge corner to the bottom outside rail to keep the gate from sagging. The poultry netting I used for a screen can add a little strength but a large stretch of pvc will sag without a diagonal support. If your distance is 12' split the gate into 2-6' sections. Blair
What size were the elbows and "T"? 1-1/2" ? Thanks.Nice gate by the way!
All the pvc is 1 1/4", which is the same ID as 1 1/4" galvanized pipe. both of which fit perfectly over 1" pipe. Only these 2 sizes are so compatable for inside / outside fit.
Mr. Hardware Thanks. What breed is your dog?
@@joesive4008 Finn is a Labradodle, 30# full grown.
Is there a particular reason why you attached a separate length of pipe to catch the Tapcon, rather than just use a tee on that corner?
Ben, you caught me. I moved the post away from the garage so I used a piece of pvc to fill the gap. You are the first, ;0)
Paint the gate matte black using a spray paint can and it will look like a metal gate!
So what is on the bottom of the galvanized post that’s in the ground that the PVC pipe sits on? If I was to use a galvanized post and slide my PVC gate over it the bottom of the PVC pipe would be touching the ground and continually rubbing a hole and digging into the earth
Actually I am resting on the ground. If this needed a bushing I would cut a small piece of 1 1/4 pvc and slide it over the pipe and drive it into the ground a little bit.
Thanks youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
How would you anchor this to a wall if there is no dirt for the galvanized pipe?
That is why I put the pipe on the other side of the path away from my wall. I would probably use the ‘L’ shaped pin gate hinges if I had to attach it to a building. Half of the hinge is a pin and the other is an eye that hangs on the pin. Similar to ‘National Hardware N130-005 Hook/Strap Hinge’
Thank you so much for responding. I have wall on both sides of the gate location and no earth to dig in. You are the best.
Could you post the pvc items you used?
3 ‘pressure rated’ 1 1/4” pvc 90’s. 1 - 1 1/4” pvc tee, 1 - 10’ x 1 1/4” pvc pipe cut to fit
Is this heavy?
No, it is extremely light
Ok I'm gonna give it a try. But I have a small dog who eventually gets out no matter what I do. She can figure out anything I've done so far. She is old and completely blind. But she's way to smart for me.
If you are using a bolt in the edge of the sidewalk for the gate to latch on, leave it up 1", your puppy should not be able to make the gate jump up that high.

I’m pretty sure you’re not from where you said. You’re a Chicagoan.
This is silly :D
