Dumb comment
I love that he put “Friday” “Team America” and “Shaun of the dead” on the list. Most don’t acknowledge comedies or put them in the same category-list of greatest films.
Team America was a documentary and you shouldn't laugh at it.
Shaun of the dead is a bloody symphony in a frame. It’s elite.
@@ianallen738 lol
I’ve always been a fan of Quentin, but when he added shaun of the dead I became an even bigger fan, that movie is a comedy masterpiece
Kingpin. Burbs are in my top 25. And I fucking HATE comedies
I saw The Matrix without ever knowing what it was actually about. Best movie experience of my life, and ever since then, I don't watch trailers.
I did the same with avatar, then ended up watching it 3 times while it was still in the cinema. Definitely the best way to go into a movie
@@MF_JONES Absolutely, TRAILERS are useless! In my case, long story short, I went to watch it without wanting to watch it as I had seen 3 seconds of the trailer and they were jumping from one building to another (Morpheous during training) and I said "NO WAY I WILL EVEN WATCH THAT GARBAGE"... and needless to say: It blew my mind.
Never heard of Braveheart, went to it with my buddies hungover…Never replicated that experience
Same. I didn't watch 2 and 3 for sake of its greatness.
Had the same experience with The Matrix, didn't know what it was about, was pretty much blown away. I like the comment Tarantino makes about Speed, being what it was back then, going to a movie theater and watching it. I kind of have the same thing for movies like Days of Thunder and Jurassic Park. Thrilling to watch in a movie theater, but maybe not later on on a tv screen when you get older. Battle Royale is bonkers, it's unorthodox and god damn strange, watching it wanted me to see more asian movies. Think I will watch some of the movies he mentions.
Love how he starred Bruce Willis in his most popular movie ever - Pulp Fiction - yet recognizes Bruce's best performance was in someone else's movie. Loved Unbreakable.
Doubt unbreakable is his best performance....12 monkeys would probably be his best.
What is a hero without a villain
Die hard 1 was one of his best too.. that’s what put him on the map 100%. Arguably one of the best action movies ever made and I don’t think anyone could of played that role anywhere close to Bruce.
well obviously he wouldn't name one of his own movies as favorite on this list
@@rossegan7244 In 12 monkeys Brad Pitt stole the show... :-)
His comments on the Matrix, specifically on the sequels ruining it, were spot on.
Yeah the fact that people love the trilogy and now a fourth movie as a whole baffles me. I never even bothered with that animatrix crap. But I introduced my stepdaughter to matrix and she asked to watch the second one and I was just like... no we can watch the first one again if you want...
Memories of Murder still haunts me to this day. Left me with a profound hopelessness for humanity. I love Bong Joon Ho's brilliant mash-up of horror, slapstick, family melodrama, and bureaucratic incompetence. He effortlessly blends all genres in all his films.
oh shut up idiot
One good news, the actual killer was arrested couple years? ago
It's his greatest movie by far
If a film made you feel hopeless about humanity, you've remained blind on purpose. You don't need a film to tell you that, just a pair of eyes. Look around you!
Also really liked the role reversal of the composed metropolitan and the rural hot-heads towards the end.
It’s amazing how he said “Memories of Murder directed by the same director who did The Host”. Ten years later, everybody in the world knew who Bong Joon Ho was :)))
The Host was great!
Tbh I got to know who he was after watching parasite
Quentin only watched FIGHT CLUB once every 5 years or longer... He respects it so much. It ruins other movies for him.

So is Memories of Murder
My sister in law was the one that turned me on to Battle Royal and i thank her still to this day for bringing that absolute gem into my life
This is one of the best things a director of bis stature can do, to spout praises to lesser known/foreign directors and their works to an audience that may not have otherwise seen them
Tarantino is a director/writer who genuinely loves the art form. I'd love to hear him discuss what makes a film notable vs one of these favorites. Some of them he doesn't even discuss.
True this.
I think he just says something if he thinks there is something to say that hasn't been said a million times, take praise for the fight club. He mentions the movie and moves on, with the Matrix which judging by what he said he likes less than many of the others on the list, yet he commented on it quite extensively -compared to the others anyway. He has a scattered mind and I'm sure could and would talk extensively about all of them if asked a question.
Wow. Tarantino don't know shit about movies. I'm kinda surprised tbh, but it explains the dumpster fire that is once upon a time in Hollywood.
How many times are you gonna reply with this comment?
Made a real difference that the man himself was telling us his favourite films, not just a random voiceover reading a list they'd gotten from a magazine.
yes
Tarantino has some of the most well-rounded views on movies. He watches Japanese, Korean, Chinese, American, British etc. movies and his lists always contain a mix of all kinds of genres. Horror, Action, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi etc.
'In Bruges" wasn't on his list. His opinions aren't well rounded, and he's now dead to me.
I love he put Speed in there, such a great action movie. My grandma and I watched it until the VHS was shot when I was a kid. Sadly I was a bit too young to see it in theaters but I do adore that film to this day. Totally underrated.
Seeing the matrix in theater was one of the most exhilarating movie experiences I’ve ever had
It took some years before I rented Matrix on VHS cause I thought it wasn't for me. Immediately after seeing it I played it once more. And the morning after. Since then I've watched it for...countless times...same with Fight Club, Kill Bill, Tootsie and Persona by Ingmar Bergman. Countless times.
Its hard to describe what it was like seeing the matrix for the first time in theater in context…people were losing their minds
Dude.. when he just said "No" to the bullets coming at him, my theater went wild.

The sequels are just as deep but the message goes over most people's head, this is also why the last one is also the most hated.
The sequels didn't ruin it. They expanded it. People misunderstand those movies, they are great.

Just realized this was one of the lists Bong Joon Ho was talking about in his Best Director Oscar speech. Quentin surely has good taste in international films, and most legendary directors do. Subtitles really partially removes the language obstacles of accessing some great masterpieces.
Subtitles are fine, dubbing destroys a movie.
@@sparqqling Depends on who is doing the dubbing. America's dubbing industry is awful, because we don't care. Spain's dubbing industry is incredible, they actually do a great job.
@@sparqqling I think that it also depends on the kind of movie/ the public that will watch it. My country don't produce a lot of animations, and without dubbing, I would not have had the opportunity to enjoy movies while growing up. Even today, I sometimes watch a movie dubbed and it's actually pretty good, at least where I live.
@@homerosouza2353 Fully disagree, I'm coming from a country with a few million native speakers most things beyond a target audience of 8 years old are subtitled. Dubbing is horrible for anything that is not an animation.
@@sparqqling Do you think a child would be happier reaching subtitles or having the pleasure of watching something on their own language? I have seen some dubbing that was horrible to the point of ruining the movie, but most of it was really good and fun to watch. Quite a few of his favourites are movies I greatly enjoyed.
I would’ve expect Oldboy on the list, as Tarantino pushed it forward during the Cannes Filmfestival in 2004. (Same year as Memories of Murder)

My favorite movies of all time, not just from 1992 to 2009, are all Quentin Tarantino movies. I get lost in each and every one of them. Engaging, intense and more than a hint of humor. Dark af. Scratches my cinematic itch. Hard and satisfyingly.

JSA is Chan-Wook Park's whose done Oldboy (and multiple other great works like The Handmaiden and No Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). If I would give another good examples then Chaser and I Saw The Devil are sooo good watches, just straight up adrenaline filled scenes and beautifully shot. Bittersweet Love is also one of my favorites, in that and I Saw The Devil is the same guy as the lead (and the same director). He is the actor who is found out to be the game-master in the Squid Game which it's kinda a revelation if into korean films. It fits really good because he actually can fight and does stunts so anyone who regocnized him would be like ok makes sense why he would have won the game 😅
The actor who starred in JSA, Bittersweet, ISTD, and Squid Game is Lee Byung-hun.
@@xose2863 indeed he is
Korean films are the best. Some other notable mentions: Night In Paradise, The Wailing, A Dirty Carnival, New World, Mother
@@adi_ridhwan there is too much to mention but The Wailing even tho yes I think it's very good I also think it got hyped up a bit too much for being so scary even tho the one obvious stand-out scene does give you chills. It's a good movie still. A Tale of Two Sisters was more so scary for me when I watched it and I just don't get scared easily by a movie. More like fun horror movie would be Train to Busan for example. Also yeah New World is worth of mentioning I have watched it couple times. The Yellow Sea, A Hard Day, Tunnel is good. Madeo also is by the Parasite director Bong Joon Ho (most propably would know him from Snowpiercer or Okja), his first movie Barking Dogs Never Bite is tonally very weard black comedy and worth of seeing if into him. Memories of Murder feels more like him solidifying his style but the Barking Dogs is still a good watch (I must say there is violence towards dogs since westeners are quite sensitive towards that so, just to say 😅).
thanks ;D
He's so right about the Matrix 2&3 ruining the Matrix series. Literally everyone berates me when I say this, but I'm satisfied that Tarantino thinks the same
i try and pretend they dont exist for a bit and solely view Matrix on its own, ill love it til the last of my days
@@jayyavid5363 I still haven't watched the other two...same with john wick
@@raskolnikov7034 they’re decent watches, both film series, just lack the majesty of the firsts.
Its so obvious. Who berates you?
Everyone has that opinion
I do remember sitting in the movie theatre as that bus drove down that rode, and it was a hell of a ride. Easily forgotten now, but at the time, man.
Same thing with The Matrix. I'd give a lot to go back in that point in time, seeing it in the cinema for the first time.
Thats a tremendous list !
Quentin excites you about movies like nothing/nobody else can as if they're not exciting enough already! I just want to love my craft work the way Quentin loves films.
As expected.. This list is A+++ Unbreakable is heartbreakingly unappreciated. Pure masterclass in story telling and film making.
Didn't know you were also a movie fan, that's awesome.
m night shamlamadyngdooons
you sold it
Totally agree! Underrated film and score by James Newton Howard
I kid you not, I'm brainstorming ideas for a film I want to make, a short film for now, and the other day I was actually thinking; 'what if Superman (or god), forgot/didn't know who he was?' Keen to check this film out.
It's cool seeing such an amazing artist being envious of other artists. It really puts it all in perspective. At the end of the day, we're all just fans.
I hope Quentin makes a science fiction film one day. Idk if he’s even interested in that genre all that much but I just feel like it would be interesting to see what he could come up with cus we’ve never seen him do anything like that before
A Tarantino Sci Fi? That would be like Firefly wouldn't it? Like a space western. Or you could do a supernatural earth based Sci fi film. Maybe like a Signs movie where it's mostly suspense mixed with guns but they aren't shooting the aliens, they're shooting each other. Probably based in slave times and it's some racist white vs black cuz the slaves got some cool alien technology and the white owners are jealous.
Do you see a sign that says dead alien storage?
That would be something about gangsters dismembering aliens. 👽
Absolute legend for including Team America!
The Host and Memories of Murder are so underrated, even tho its the same director for Parasite. Great introduction to foreign filmmaking!
I wasn't a huge fan of parasite
I remember seeing a review of Speed on a show called Movies, Movies, Movies, and the look of the film was just astonishing. Back when CGI wasn’t particularly prevalent in films, and story telling and production value really counted for something.
Speed Is definetly one of the best American action films of its decade. I'd put it in the same list as Face off. Die Hard remains the best ever to me.
very solid list
Quentin is def right about Speed. After seeing the movie multiple times, its easy to just categorize it with the other straight forward action/thriller movies in your memory. But its definitely a great first watch movie
This is a good video, and very revealing of his influences behind his films such as Kill Bill and so on
Don’t think many on this list influence his work, we need his top twenty pre 1992 movies to see the films they really influenced him.
His influences were sitting alone in his mom's apartment watching 70's TV. Hence the low brow, fairly mindless list of movie favorites.
I like the fact that his list has a good blend of drama, thriller, mystery, comedy, horror, sifi and action. It's very diverse, which is a plus for a great director.
True, for anyone who wants to review or make movies, it's important to be open to many different genres, which Tarantino really seems to be.
its also not a pretentious list, no like obscure indie french films or anything like that
i think it is a bit short on comedy
@@galinageorgieva8554 it's rare to find good comedy these days.
@@galinageorgieva8554 Dazed and Confused, Friday, Team America, and Shaun of the Dead aren't enough for you?
So cool to see Unbreakable on the list. It is my favorite movie and people always kind of kind of turn their heads when I say that, so it is validating to hear Quentin put it in his top 20 for the time period and call it a masterpiece.
Bro that list is godlike😂👍🔥
Battle Royale is a piece of art! Love how diverse his list is!
It really is. The man knows his films.
Really interesting tbh, compared to the manga i thought the movie was trash imo
This is so bad lmao
@@sean2848 Depends on the order you experience the story. I watched the film first, so the novel and manga were so amazing afterwards because it fleshed out so much more of the story and characters. But I still appreciate the film for introducing me to the story in the first place. If you read the novel or manga before watching the film, then I understand it would probably feel a bit underwhelming. It really should have been a trilogy or even a TV series so they didn't have to rush it so much. A prequel film based on Shogo Kawada's first game would be especially awesome.
He has a very good point about “Speed” it was awesome at the cinema
Terminator 2 blows "Speed" out the water.
@@stressfree420 ok
@@stressfree420 well snowflake, Terminator 2 was before 1992 so that copmarison is invalid.
He's right about the last 20 minutes though. Forgivable for sure though.
@@stressfree420 you might want to reread the topic.
Two Bong Joon Ho movies, Tarantino was ahead of the curve.
I agree with Battle Royale being at number 1. It was a great movie and was a very memorable experience watching it for the first time. Great movie.
Watched Chungking Express because of his recommendation. Man's got taste
Bong Joon-Ho is just a phenomenal director. One of the worlds best as of right now.
I’ve seen like 5 of these films but the fact that those 5 films would be in my top 20 makes me wanna watch all 15 of those other movies
Great list, not seen all of them (But I will now).
Very surprised he didn’t include Chungking Express in his Top 20. He loved that one so much that he bought the distribution rights.
I gotta say, out of Wong Kar Wai's movies "In the mood for love" was by far the best, "Fallen Angels" was also great. I don't get the fascination with Chungking Express though.
I actually loved that movie. I was shocked to see Quinten talking about the movie in detail after watching it. I liked that movie so much I started dating asian women Lol. Now im married to one for 10 Misérables years.
@@StarcraftSwarm stalker asian chick sneaks in and cleans your apartment? what's not to love? I wish it would of happened to me in my 20s
I was about to post the exact same comment.
Love that he included the brilliant Japanese film Audition. OMG that film. One of my favorite films as well. An experience definitely not for the faint of heart though.
Going to start watching all these. The Cinema Goat!!
It's insane how every time Quentin gives his opinions on film I insanely agree with everything he says, just about 95% of the time.. he talked about how H20 is Jamie Lees best Halloween, and I totally agree.. that will always be my finale, I consider the David Gordon Greene trilogy fan fiction... How he talks about the Matrix being amazing, but 2, and 3 ruined it for him (didn't ruin it for me, I still love the original, and make up my own story for what happens after that masterpiece)... talks about how Unbreakable is one of the all time masterpieces of our time, and I couldn't agree more, one of my faves. Just dozens, and dozens of stuff he's said that I can't agree more with. Speed being one of the best adrenaline, edge of your seat films ever.. I could talk with this guy all day.
Insane
I agree with almost everything in his list but I can't grasp how anyone could mention Anything Else. It's one of Allen's worst movies.
