Forge / Furnace Venturi Gas Burner

2024 ж. 4 Мам.

Propane burner made with 1" pipe, 1-1/4" to 1" adapter, M10x80mm bolt, M10 nuts and large washer and 0.8mm mig welder nozzle. All found for cheap at the home improvement store.
Tested with gas at 0.5bar (around 7psi). It can run a bigger flame by increasing pressure but I think like this is enough to heat a forge or furnace. I can adjust propane flow with pressure regulator between gas tank and burner.

  • Lovely! It's amazing how simply a forge burner can be built, but how effective it can be. Excellent design!

  • Outstanding ! For those that live in an area where it's available, black iron pipe and fittings will save the acid bath step to get rid of the galvanized coating . Your design of the adjustable air gap is ingenious in that it allows for variations in gas pressure as well as fine tuning the flame . All in all a great design .

  • Great job of showing the fine tuning of the air mixture. Drilling the bolt to hold the mig tip is interesting.

  • I thread my mig tips into the connecting pipe, that way I can interchange them for optimal gas flow. Clever design though to allow for control of the choke and tip height intake.

  • I've made a few burners over the past few years. This is a nice design! I used cast reducing sockets for the burner flares but they melted. I also used a much larger reducing socket for my inlet Venturi. It's based off of one of Ron Weil's designs. Also played with modified mongo burner, I think, from Zoeller's web site. I really like your design - takes the best features of each of the designs I've played with and results in an overall simpler, possibly safer outcome. Love it!

  • It was very good, very simple to do. One idea is to remove the thread from the outlet sleeve to improve the flow of the flame and not heat up while lit.

  • Great job! If you ever have a problem with the MIG tip clogging or you want to change orifice sizes for the use of different gases, instead of soldering in the tip you could try using a hollow bolt that's tapped at one end to take the tips' threads.

  • I welded one using stainless pipe, the choke doesn't have to close so tight as it will be wide open when in use, l used a quick release axle from a mountain bike as it already has a 5mm hole for tapping M6, 1mm mig tip and a 0 to 4 Bar regulator, the temperature it achieves over crushed fire bricks is great, 30mm solid bar white hot in about 4 to 5 mins.

  • Muriatic/Hydrochloric acid strips the zinc off super fast and is a lot easier "for me" to get, pool chemicals. Also looking into using "lamp bolts" the long hollow bolt used to assemble some lamps. Save the hassle of drilling that long deep hole in the bolt. GREAT Burner, I have all the materials to build three of these for my forge, just need the time to do it. LOL

  • It's great to get to a point where you can really start to make stuff. I still need an welding torch and compressor before I can say i can cover most jobs at the moment. And the air tools. And a cordless nail gun A lathe would be handy too. A track saw would be good for tge large large boards OK will be cool after that. I really really want a bandsaw though.

    • can do the same thing with vinegar, takes longer. There are other things that work well, but maybe a bit less scary than sulfuric. I use muractic (HCL) that is sold for cleaning concrete, still pretty nasty. But given the alternative. Look up "how I killed myself" about a metalworker/blacksmith who lived long enough to write an article about zinc fume poisoning (I believe only a couple of weeks between his mistake and untimely passing). Maybe the worst part is he knew better, and knew he knew better.

  • Thank you so much for this design. I made myself two of these and they work perfectly. I am planning to use them in a longer forge for more even heating of long-ish blades. Design is pretty cheap and doable (since I have a small lathe), but for me most important is that is of good quality! Still need to make a holder for them, but it is of lesser concern! I am aware that this is not unique design, I found it in some more places, but your execution of this burner set me to replicate it ! :)

  • You can get "lamp rod" at the hardware store. Its a hollow threaded rod. The threads are close enough to 1/8npt that it will accept 1/8 pipe fittings. You can skip hollowing out a bolt and use this instead.

    @jonathonhaberkorn233@jonathonhaberkorn2333 жыл бұрын
    • I liked this but also wondered the metal composition, and how it handles the amount of heat it may be subjected to. But I'm sure there are other available sources of hollow threaded rods if that isn't a viable option.

      @jbfairchild@jbfairchild3 жыл бұрын
    • @@jbfairchild I have used this with great success. It is made of steel(galvanized of course). But when a venturi burner is functioning properly they "push" the heat away and are usually cool to the touch from the sheer volume of air flowing through them.

      @jonathonhaberkorn233@jonathonhaberkorn2333 жыл бұрын
    • @@jbfairchild I will also mention, I have played with this alot... a 1/4 × 1/8mpt compression fitting will accept a few brands of mig tips. Simply insert, tighten the feral, and now you have a extremely easy way to play with orifices with drilling or soldering.👍
