  • At the hospital I worked. I admitted a 90 year old gentleman. Some of his neighborhood kids believed he had money ( simply more money than they did ) They broke into his trailer. Tied him up with exiletention cords and electrical tape. Beat him almost to death. It was a few days before he was found. He was out of his mind and severely hurt. He needed to have soft restraints to protect him. I could not bear the thought of him being restricted from movement again. He was confused, but you just know the restrictions would have caused panic on some level. I checked out and spent the night with him so he didn't need to be tied down. The next day. I made arrangements with church members to have someone with him at all times. The hopeless, loneliness he must have experienced during his ordeal haunts me. He is gone now. I hope we were able to provide him some comfort in his last days.

    • Oh thank you for the update, I thought I missed something when they mentioned he died and Bruce called his witness statements "dying declarations," yet they then say the two are convicted of "attempted murder." I was like what? attempted? It was likely just due to what was going on at the time. Thankfully they upgraded the charge.

  • I like the fact that the 911 operator took a split second to assure the caller that help was on the way. I've heard so many recordings where the operator is peppering the caller with questions, ignoring the repeated pleas of "I need an ambulance! I need EMS!" They could just say "They're on the way, I promise!" and continue collecting data. It takes less than a second and saves time overall. I really don't understand why that simple step isn't drilled into them during training.

    @ztoob8898@ztoob88983 ай бұрын
    • I think at times they are deciding who should actually be sent. The caller doesn't always know who they need. But I get your point, it does save time and relieve stress on the caller, which might lead to better info being given.

      @--_DJ_--@--_DJ_--3 ай бұрын
    • It’s also for liability purposes if the dispatcher Promises the ambulance is on the way before the ambulance crew call out that they are actually on the way and something happens like it won’t start or even if say they get a flat tire on the way then the dispatcher can be liable as they promised they were on the way when they really weren’t… in the academy they pound liability into you if the dispatcher says anything wrong off script or out of policy then can be held Personally liable which is a place you don’t want to be… but I get it and most dispatchers are trying to get help there ASAP

      @tiertroy@tiertroy3 ай бұрын
    • It’s amazing the lack of basic human empathy, common sense and where’s the training??? Calm the caller down, slow the pace, then get details but quickly obviously, that all can be done In 10 seconds. But I guess we’re dealing with police dispatch ! Not the longest tool or most useful in the shed!

      @hoopslaa5235@hoopslaa52353 ай бұрын
    • @@--_DJ_-- if you can't figure it out within a few seconds, you should probably just send everyone. It can't hurt to have police there when you need an ambulance and vice verse. If cops get there first they have at least basic first aide and CPR training and even though ems aren't detectives they can still collect info in the meantime. So it really can't hurt to send both. I honestly don't think that's why they don't say that, I think the ones who don't are just irritated and kinda over the phone call. I've heard a lot of calls where they are just super frustrated. They become cold from hearing traumatic things everyday.

      @Oliviaandtrina@Oliviaandtrina3 ай бұрын
    • AGREED 1000%. Drives me up a wall when 911 operators dont/don't assure the caller that help is otw IMMEDIATELY. (Same as when they act uninterested &/or inconvenienced). Good to know I'm not the only one.

Even when there is no valuables, they could still fall victim to be tortured to withdraw money from retirement accounts or CDs.

    @33Jenesis@33Jenesis3 ай бұрын
    • The torture part is almost the most senseless thing about this (apart from the murder). If you are going to be shameless and heartless in stealing from this elderly man, at least wait for him to fall asleep or be out of house and then steal something sneakily, what is there to be gained from torturing him? It's like a thousand times the immorality and risk for maybe twice the gain? Absolutely stupid.

      @holysecret2@holysecret23 ай бұрын
    • @holysecret2 they didn’t want to wait until he was asleep or gone bc they wouldn’t be able to get in the safe, if the key was missing i thought they could have got in tho, maybe still needed the combination since it was stated they tortured him to get info ab the safe. im sure they could’ve got away w his car without entering his home even, you can start cars without a key, but no that wouldn’t be enough to them. they enjoyed the horror they put that man through. they felt his life wasn’t worth him living, he was less than due to age 😢 when in reality hes in the category of the most vulnerable in our society, a man who was likely forced into war like many vietnam vets, lived comfortably & had nice things bc he earned it, unlike those junkies. it’s incomprehensible how someone can do this, for material gain, no regard for the human life taken. he mattered & his memory will live on, he wasn’t just a murder victim, he was a fighter, he was resilient, he was loved, they will never come close to even a portion of who he was in their lifetime. my heart breaks for him, every murder victim breaks my heart but elderly & children, disabled victims..idk it just hits different knowing how vulnerable & defenseless they are 😢

If the Defense Lawyer does a half ass job, the defendant can file an appeal which could result in a retrial or overturned verdict.

    • It’s funny to me that so many people blame defense attorneys for representing guilty clients, but virtually none of these people focus their energy on the number of prosecutors who knowingly prosecute either innocent or ‘not guilty’ defendants - meaning they take someone guilty of some BS charge like improper lane usage and try to charge them with reckless driving. Really pathetic view of the court system to see prosecutors as “public servants” but defense attorneys as “the lawyers defending dirtbags.”

      @christianc.christian5025@christianc.christian50253 ай бұрын
    • @@christianc.christian5025 There's also a bunch of stories of people who almost certainly were guilty, or even had admitted to crimes in some way, but were ultimately proven innocent. Or worse yet, were proven innocent years, decades after the fact after they were falsely convicted. There is a video of another defense lawyer recollecting one of his earlier cases where he led his client to a false guilty verdict out of his own belief in his client's guilt, and he realized too late that he had been wrong and his client had been truly innocent. As a defense lawyer, you are obligated to believe in your client's innocence until their guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. You have to uphold that standard in every case, so that it can apply to everyone equally.

    • I doubt it, grandma would be far too busy with all her embezzlement, bunion business and drug taking to have anyone to dinner. 🤣though if she sent Bruce and Michael a written invitation they could reply by E sign.

    • @Changlang458 you can do it man 👨 I did. I feel the same way about my dad he never knew about me being an addict. I've been clean for a while now. I'm on suboxone. Tbh the main reason I quit was cuz I was sick of chasing the drug dealers around trying to get my fix. I don't live in a big city or anything so shit was always tough to come by.

    • This is your greatest ally. Tell him. You will feel free and your stress will go way down. You are still a good, valuable person, even if you are suffering from an addiction. Being honest will make your life way easier.. my suggestion is to not hide anything

    • You CAN do this, from one recovered addict to another. It takes wanting to stop more than wanting to continue. My revelation came in rehab, watching the other addicts, from my age (19 at the time) to great grannies, some in there for the 4th or 5th time, and it smacked me in the face that THEY were my future if I didn't stop. It's different for everyone, and sometimes it's gotta hurt bad enough that stopping us less painful. Tell your Dad, he's your father and I'm sure he loves you and wants what's best for you, and will understand that it takes a strong person to admit to their faults and fuck ups and ask for help. Peace and love coming your way from Colorado

    • You can do this. I'm a mom to 6 kids some over 18. I always tell them and pray if if they get into a this situation please tell me so I can help. I'd rather them be honest instead of dead. Keep your head up, you got his.

  • As a disabled person who relies on help from these types of home health aide this scares me. I've had aides steal medication before and one fussed at me good for not selling my pills like she did (i asked for a new aide that day) Usually they're very sweet and helpful but some weirdos in the mix and you're very vulnerable to them.
