Today I'll show how I remove the 20R engine from the rusty Ohio 1980 Pickup. This engine runs well and will be freshened up and re-used for this project, but it will be mated to a 5-speed instead of the automatic.

  • Pretty sure the coolant turned to gel because someone mixed the wrong kinds of different coolant together. Never seen it before but that’s what I’ve heard.

    • Yeah, that will do it. Edit: Also a case of, so I heard.

    • @@6thGearGarage go for it. Also I don’t know what your plan for that radiator is but maybe you have a way to cut it open? Something tells me it’s full of gel as well.

    • Phase 1 will just be to get it together and running. Once I finish some other projects, I'll get around to phase 2, which will be body & paint. I'm going to embrace the rusty patina farm truck look for a while :)

    • I’ve done it a few times on 22r’s and Volvo b230f’s granted I still had to put a puller to get the harmonic balancers off.

    • I've done it in a few videos now and it's my favorite method, since my impact isn't powerful enough. Just check rotation of the engine first... there are come counter-clockwise engines out there!

  • I love watching your progress and thanks for taking us along, but I often wonder, why put so much effort into a 2WD ute? A 4x4, I'd understand - they are great for off-road and fetch a good price if you were to sell it, but a 2WD. What am I missing?

    • Great question! I used to part out trucks in this poor of condition, but thought I'd challenge myself to save this rust bucket. I already have a lifted 1985 4x4, so a lowered 2wd would make a cool shop truck for hauling stuff. It's definitely taking longer than I expected!

      @6thGearGarage@6thGearGarage6 ай бұрын
    • While 4x4 trucks are cool. I took my 2wd up a mountain in the snow. It was several feet deep. When I turned around and parked at this staging area about half way up. This guy comes walking over from this group with a 4 runner and a jeep. He says “I gotta give you props my 4x4 Chevy couldn’t even make it this far” granted mine was a 22r instead, but 2wd can still get the job done.

      @Emoralis@Emoralis6 ай бұрын
    • @@Emoralis I've had a similar experience. My 2WD hiace van, with M/T tyres made its way to some very unlikely spots. Once a very ruffled 4x4'er demanded to know how I got the hiace to the top of this sand hill. He'd been trying for a while without success digging himself into the soft sand and really not progressing much and finally, defeated walked up to find out. I just pointed to the track leading to the top that he entirely missed.

  • Is that a problem with coolant mixing, or some kind of crappy radiator seal? Yikes..... It's pretty though......

    @JimsEquipmentShed@JimsEquipmentShed6 ай бұрын
    • From what I've been told, it's probably GM Dexcool mixed with normal green antifreeze. Hopefully that will be the worst of it and it's not in the heater core and radiator.
