How men get along with the king of animals | SLICE

In Sub-Saharan Africa, Masaï live along the borders of Kenya and Tanzania. But these nomadic shepherds share their land with the lion, and confrontations are inevitable between man and beast. Big cats continue to fascinate us today. Some people in the West, evoking the initiatory rites of an earlier era, pit themselves against the felines, risking their lives. Mike Penman who dedicated his life to wildlife studying, embarks us in his risky experience with a lion in South Africa.

    • Mike is an expert on a lion’s body language but even he wouldn’t try that at night when lions are in a hunting frame of mind. The toilet paper idea is smart because the lion doesn’t know what it is, but looks like something that can be thrown at it. I saw another video with Mike (I think the longer version of this) where he had to throw the toilet paper because the lion started charging towards him and missed but it did the job.

    • The lion knows very well that SOME humans are extremely dangerous. It doesn't really know whether Mike is one of them, or if he could kill it within a momen't notice. In fact, neither did we. There very well might have been a couple of riflemen directly behind the camera, pointing their rifles at the lion at all times. In the end, the lion didn't have a reason to call Mike's bluff. He was not acting agressively towards the lion, not trying to take its food or mates and was not a lot of food himself. Even if there was only a 1% chance that he had some way (unknown to the lion) to really defend himself, attacking him would not be worth the risk. Also, Mike's body language supported his bluff (if indeed he was bluffing). By appearing defensive but not still prepared to defend himself, he was not acting like prey, but rather as an opponent that thought it had a way to defend itself.

  • I'm proud Nomad Son of Northern Kenya and pastoralism is our economic livelihood, nonetheless we peacefully coexist with the wild life. We respect wild animals and even go to greater length of protecting and preserving them. The little conflict that arises is just due to stiff competition for survival. We are instilled from a very tender age the value and spirit of respecting the ecosystem and the mother nature as it has in plenty and abundance for all human beings and wild animals. We love and protect wild animals no wonder most of these wild lives are still thriving and growing amongst the areas inhabited by pastoralist or nomadic communities.
