  • My daughter went to Korean school and when they heard her speak Korean, the elders were very taken in by her. They loved working with her when it came to traditional korean inki and brush writing. The elderly women would argue with each other on who was going to be her teacher for the day. When she went in to be tested in her language skills, she thought she was a beginner but she tested as an advanced student, Where did she learn the language? She learned from dramas and she learned Hangul writing from her Tae kwon do Masters and their parents. She is a 3rd degree black belt, working on becoming a master herself.

I obviously cant talk from my own personal experience but I went with my friend to Korea back in 2021 for 6 weeks and she's black and she had no issues really when she was there! the only thing was a couple of nightclubs didn't let her in but there are plenty that are supper friendly to everyone! • @@Justthatonegirl1345I’ve spent about 7 weeks total in Korea over 3 separate trips, just got back from my last one last week. I’m a Southeast Asian, deeply tanned girl. If you’re asking if there’s colorism, I am gonna have to say yes. Definitely more than I ever experienced in neighbouring Japan or Taiwan. It’s not quite overt for the most part, but I’ve had a few unpleasant run-ins that I could have done without.

  • I lived in Seoul for a few months in 1997-1998, playing with a singer named Lee Seung Hwan. We did a tour, which was actually in Seoul except for one or two shows. I really enjoyed meeting the Korean people. I guess that would be "old" music today. I loved the food. Seung Hwan and our other hosts would take us to American restaurants at first, but we told them we always ate Korean food when we were out on our own, they started to take us to Korean restaurants that they liked. I think it is exactly as you said--that they were afraid we would not like Korean food. But most Americans from larger cities are familiar with all types of Asian food, and enjoy eating the authentic versions when traveling!! Good luck with your channel.

I have been married to a beautiful Korean lady for 48 years and even lived in Korea for 5 years. I enjoy good Gugak (Song So-hee in particular) and Trot music. While I can't eat the strong spicy food there is plenty I like. Before I ever went to Korea for the first time I studied the history and traditions and also the concepts and ideas of Confucianism because I was informed that if you understand that I would understand much about Korean society.

  • New to your channel! Congrats on the 100k subscribers! I think 1) respecting your elders and 2) respecting the culture of the country you're visiting should be common courtesy. I'd love to try some Korean food when I visit, but as much as I like a little spice, I can't handle the real spicy food. I love Korea, when I watch any historical dramas of the Joseon Dynasty or early 1920s-1930s, I always research later because I want to understand how much of the drama was based on true historical facts and this way I learn more about the history of your country. I love learning about other cultures, languages and food and comparing to see the similarities as well as the differences in our cultures.

    • I agree with you on how one should always show respect to elders...but want to add that respect should always be shown to others, no matter the age. And I am the same as you, I love researching historical facts while watching historical dramas. I feel immensely thankful for the chance to get a window to other contries traditions and history via the internet. (When I was growing up (I am 67), one had to go to the library to search from the limited supply of books on various matters. BTW, I love kimchi, korean chicken and more.....hmmm, and mageolli ☺

    • @@linda.s.gisladTotally agree that respect should be given to anyone regardless of age. I'm also 67, well until September. I'm grateful for the internet that we have so much information at our fingertips. I'm Greek American living in Greece, though I've gotten used to the metric system, I'll say google helped especially at converting recipes. You can search anything...my phone had a problem and I found the answer online. I bought a bread maker here that had various languages but didn't have English, so I searched and found the English instruction manual. Going to the library was fun because I loved reading, but of course had limits.

Congratulations on crossing 100,000 subscribers 🎉🎊 I wanted to take a moment to express my recent fascination with the captivating portrayal of Korean culture in Kdramas. Despite their fictional nature, these dramas consistently highlight values of decency and integrity, often in contrast to certain depictions in Western movies. The characters in Kdramas frequently embody admirable morals and principles, making the viewing experience truly enriching and inspiring for me. I dream of visiting Korea one day to fully immerse myself in its rich culture, witness its stunning beauty firsthand, and indulge in its delicious cuisine. I agree; taking the time to research and understand the culture and people does help, as well as learning simple words and phrases. Korea is such a beautiful country, and I'm thankful I was able to experience it firsthand six months ago. Everyone I met while I was there was kind and helpful. I felt safe everywhere I went especially since I took a solo trip. However, I will admit two weeks is definitely not long enough to visit, so my next planned trip will be longer. • 100k subscribers, is well deserved. Korean food is flying off the shelves at Trader Joe’s. I have the short ribs but need the fried kimchi rice and Tteokbokki to complete my menu. It is a fun thing to do and of course many thanks to you for sparking this interest. Keep up the good work.

  • Hi Danny. Thanks so much for this video. I am so glad I found you! You are adorable and clearly embody Korean principles. I love the things you shared and as you mentioned, many are true of other cultures as well. I have only met a few Korean people in person and I love that you are a “real” local Korean that I can learn from. 😄 I love watching Kdramas (that I discovered about 10 years ago) and I would like to visit there someday. Since you asked, I would love to hear everything about both Korean traditions and current living. Also everything about favorite foods. I am also really interested in family folk music and songs that little kids learn growing up from toddler through grade school. I know K-pop groups are becoming very popular also. Take care and thanks again. I will subscribe right now and I look forward to seeing more of your videos! 👍
