The KTM 390 Adventure was created to offer a balance between touring and off-road ability. It's not an easy mix to achieve, and this is the hardest KTM motorcycle for Shumi and Kartikeya to recommend. On MotorInc First, they're discussing what the new 2023 line-ups new 390 Adventure X and 390 Adventure SW models mean for the range, for customers and for the KTM Adventure series.

  • I often get asked what KTM can do to fix the gap between what the 390 Adventure does and what we expect it to do. First, the SW suggests that the ideal 390 Adventure would split into two parts. One that does touring really well and another that does off-road really well. Sort of how the Rally Kit turns the Xpulse 200 from a casually good off-roader to an excellent, far more serious off-road machine. Why it cannot be done with this generation of the Adventure is mostly to with the frame itself (which is why I keep saying 2025, the model change is a crucial milestone for this motorcycle). We need more suspension travel and more ground clearance to make this as much of an off-roader as the 790 or 890 Adventures. Maybe even a 21" front wheeled model! If you sacrifice the idea of off-roading, then the bones of a good tourer are actually in the 390 Adventure. I'd be fine with the 19" front wheel -it has the utility of handling bad roads and flatter trails better. But what you really need is suspension that allows the 390 Adventure to settle down and do _a lot more_ than the 390 Duke or equivalent on Indian roads (implying a mix of surfaced but bumpy roads). This is what I think the adjustable suspension, had it been standard from the beginning, offered riders. And now, the SW's spoked wheels to me, are a far smaller utility than the adjustable suspension. And the more I rode the SW, the more I concluded that the standard 390 A should _not_ have anything but adjustable suspension today.

  • Shumi, I rented a KTM 390 for the spiti circuit, rode like a maniac... and I loved it. Especially coming from a Tiger 800 at home, I loved the light weight nimbleness. It is still a very good bike and can be recommended to most of the riders (tourers.). I liked your analysis on the seat height/suspension/frame. You have not gone overboard like the most other reviewers, who just give gospel. You have actually backed your views with analysis. On more suggestion, in Motoinc videos (except this one), your presentation style changed... I personally miss your earlier involved analysis... may be change of style is not needed

    • That being said, (and this comes from a place of deepest love) I feel the background wall can be done a smidge better maybe. Its good now, but I think it could've been done better (but hey that's just my opinion). Specifically I feel the pastel white and pale blue: instead of this a plain dark wall with a better visible logo might've looked a tad bit better (even though I understand that a plain wall wouldn't have as much personality as the current one)

  • I got my 390 ADV last year. Been having a hoot on our roads with it cuz of the engine , the longer- than-Duke suspension travel and the accomodating seats. It's comfortable enough (even 2 up, provided the pillion isn't overweight) on long rides and is engaging on the twisties and more than capable of mild off roading. It fits my requirements pretty well. The only thing I wish was different was my 5 foot 6 height and the exhaust note. It might not be the best at any one thing but for someone who enjoys more than one type of riding and doesn't have the budget for 4 different bikes (for cities, canyons, highways and off road), the 390 ADV is a great pick in my opinion.

  • It is an awesome video as ever. I have been watching your videos and was able to narrow down my search for my next upgrade . Briefly speaking about my experiences I have a classic 350 and I usually drive 60-70% city and rest touring but now I am planning to go regular touring with my wife so this number might come 50-50 city and touring. I want my next bike to have close to 40 bhp and good ergonomic for both rider and pillion thus thinking to get adv x or scrambler 400 x . I also wanted to include Himalayan 450 but the tube tyres are a turn off for me plus when they do include the tubeless tyres it might cross my bugget of 3.5 on road. Any suggestions or recommendations which to choose or if I missed any bike please do tell… thank in advance and as always great work in making this videos … they are very helpful 😄

But having ridden both of them, I knew I made the right choice bcz the 390 is also a phenomenal tourer if not better and feels at home in the twisties which is much more usable in the city too. • Okay, let me pit things into perspective. The last time I rode a motorcycle was 30 years ago and it was the original Boss - the Suzuki Shogun. I'm not in the market anytime soon for a motorcycle, although to be completely transparent I did come close to pulling the trigger on a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro but that's another story. I did see the 390 Adventure last year for my kid brother back in India, and I was really keen that he gets one, but....I'm here because I love both of these guys who love and breathe motorcycles. I love their content and the conversational style, crisp format. This video has really cleared whatever doubts I had in my mind about the 390 Adv. I think I'm going to tell my brother to wait until 2025. Absolutely amazing video, guys. Keep up the good work!!

  • This used to be a dream machine for me because of 3 reasons, I can tour, It's cheap to maintain, It was reasonable comfortable for luggage and pillion! But life changed - pillion went out of the picture. Suddenly - 4.2Lacs on road started to look steep, (middle class boy troubles). Got something really reasonable as a Used Vstrom 250 and I am very happy with the new found ability of it to really tour. It fits my single bike garage perfectly. It takes me to office - takes me to weekend twisties - takes me out on highways at reasonable 90-100 KMPH (did a 1700Km ride recently to understand that bike well and I was impressed AF). Moral of the story- wanted to wait for Himalayan 450 but that is a long way away and I think it'll also take a while for RE to sort out its niggles from the first batch. So maybe another 2 years until I buy another machine, until then my recently acquired 250SX should serve me well. Btw shumi's advice on used machines and vstrom videos helped me a lot.

  • @shumi @MotorInc I am riding Meteor 350 now, i like that motorcycle very much but the thing is the road i travel by everyday (around 50-60km) is not that well, even i would say it's very bad now. And on Meteor this daily journey on that road is becoming very uncomfortable and frustrating for me. So i was thinking o getting an Adventure tourer motorcycle instead. so i can use it for touring and daily rides and bit of off- roading whenever needed or feel like to do so. Right now i am confused between Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX & KTM Adventure 250. but again since KTM ADV 250 and KTM ADV 390x has only 30-35k price difference so it got me thinking as well. kindly suggest which one to buy? Roads conditions change n having a average setting that works evenly is what x offers. The motor is tuned to suit Adv riding demands. I don't know to what extreme it can go for now it is doing flawlessly what I want it to. No TC keeps the riding experience Organic

  • I also had the same opinion on the quick shifter in my 390 Adventure, it never worked smoothly in my initial days of ownership. When it worked, it worked like magic, and when it doesn't, I felt it was ruining the whole mood. Infact, I turned the QS option off in my bike for months. But later a thought came, as I had paid for the whole package and somehow I have to figure this out. 😂 With constant practice and experiments, I got that sweet spot where it would work smoothand now I'm happy with the QS. The spark cut off is only for a split second when the contact comes to shift lever and we have to shift through the same time. Its working for me in all the gears up and down, only thing is we have to maintain the RPM between 4-5s. The QS works like charm for me now and I use the clutch only for b2b traffic. I guess it will work for everyone once we start to live with it and figure it out on how to find that sweet spot to shift. I'm one of the those users who does mid level off road and uses it mainly for touring, so the tube tyres in SW is a bit concerning. Hope KTM will bring an option to choose the parts to be replaced than getting a new model from them. Great insights as usual!

  • Fantastic detailed analysis 👌. I own the 2022 adventure 390 standard model standing tall at 6ft 4inch,As of now I am planning to upgrade with both adjustable suspensions but not the spoke wheels. Still the 2022 alloy has a strong rigorous alloy to tackle offroad stuff not going to compromise on tube tyres. I was not a great fan of himalayan due to its under powered engine, weight & unreliable chassis. But I am definitely optimistic that the himalayan 450 would give a tough fight for ktm interms of practicality & increased power & some 10kg weight increase from the older himalayan. Although KTM would still manage its ground by offering a light weight nimble bike that would have a slight edge over the newer himalayan in terms of Power, better customer service satisfaction than RE which is busy in selling their numbers lacking in number of experienced technicians & timely service delivery. Definitely the sales numbers would be dominated by RE as akways. I request MOTORINC team to bring a drag race video of the upcoming Himalayan 450 vs 390 adventure just like what POWERDRIFT did with duke & interceptor that would be a bomb💥 of a content to watch 😁❤️.

Wanted ur unbiased opinions. Thank you sir love your videos so much knowledge with different perspective. ❤

  • Finally someone spoke about how an Adv x and the SW variant rides. Yes said it damn straight, the X is much more sharper and crisp while riding than the SW variant. I certainly doubt the reliability of the spoke wheels put together. I am quite happy with my Adv x. Got some money to put on some Accesories on my bike and buy me some adventure gears as well. There is no such actual use of traction control orquick shifter in an ADV or the TFT screen as such. I would have been really happy if cornering ABS was there in the adv X but it is quite manageable to be honest. It all really matters on who rides the motorcycle. Anyways happy to see guys come out of your own together. Good luck for your future adventures, and I hope to see you guys anytime if possible. Cheers.😁

I ride on tarmac and occasional off road patches with a pillion and luggage, and the bike has served me well. Moreover its a head turner which is a positive point. I would pay the extra above Himalayan anyday for its presence and easy top end speed.

But the vibes in the footpegs and the weird suspension settings doesn’t feel right. So, now I have one more thing to fix my ADV 390, ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSIONS ! But I’ll wait for the new Himalayan 😍

  • What do you suggest should one go for Adv 390 X or Wait for the Scrambler 400 X from Triumph? reading the spec sheet, it looks like Ktm has more suspension travel around 177mm, the triumph is around 150mm.. I especially like the triumph scrambler but if the adv 390 X offer better ride quality within the city and handles better than the Triumph then I will go for the 390 Adv X, simply because 80 percent of my rides are within the city hustlebustle, I own a Dominar 400 2021 model and I am planning to sell it because it's not a really plush ride suspension wise and the handle is simply too heavy especially when riding with a pillion, it gets weirdly unbalanced.

I fully concur that the bike is a tourer and not a real off roader. I mean look at the stock Footpegs angle. It's canted forward, Ready To Race 3. I've done 400 km a day ride on Tarmac and I'm happy about what this bike can do on highways. And I'll keep it on the Highway.

  • Hey Guys... nice reviews, different from the pack , long but I guess thats where content and technicalities take the edge 'coz drive around videos are plenty out there to gorge on. Hats off on taking the risk... Wrt this video, its created a cloud for me. I'm moving out from an Electra 10years old. Shortlisted the next ride to the Ktm Adv X or the Interceptor. Cant push the budget more. Wanted a 40+bhp bike, that can do the city for work, some amount of cruising and maybe some offroading (yet to start :-)) Closing in onto the Adv X because of its seating position. The Interceptor and many other bikes (including the Duke) gives me a strain on my shoulders and hence the Adv X. Ok to go with that? or is there something with 40+bhp and a riding position thats not too stretched for my shoulders?

  • Shumi is right, I rode my 390 standard around 14500kms and just returned from Ladakh ride, last 52km from Hanle to Tso moriri was very bad off road and my Tyre pressure was 29 but actually was 31 due to altitude it was like that. It was very difficult to ride that patch because the suspension and minor change in tyre pressure the feeling was like it's a steel tyre with no suspension. Had to stop every now and then to relax my shoulders.

  • I want a motorcycle for city commute & my priority is touring. Currently I use 2010 model Yamaha FZ-S for the above purpose and yes sometimes I do 1000 kms a day(17-20 hours) too. I want a bike with good(at least decent) suspension & riding comfort, but tank range and fair mileage is also not ignorable. I'm actually highly confused between V-Strom 250 and KTM Adventure 390X coz they both seem to be good enough at what they do. But I also like Honda CB300R (yes it's a completely different bike but I love it too). My height is 5'6" and I've test ridden all the above bikes.... Ktm is tall, Suzuki is 👍🏻+spacious and Honda is 👍🏻+lightest of the lot too. And yes, the content you guys provide is top notch. Respect to you guys from deep within ❤.

  • I recently purchased the standard 390 ADV in March 2023 and completed a ride from Mumbai to Leh and back ( With pillion and luggage). The suspension in the initial days felt uncomfortable compared to Himalayan and GS310 but once I got used to it along with the right preload setting, The suspension doesn’t feel like a bother anymore and once you are past that, The package that this KTM offers with the space in the saddle for two, The luggage carrying capacity, The features, The power, The ease of servicing it anywhere in India at a cheap cost start to grow on you. At this point, This is the only worthwhile upgrade for a person who has owned a 200cc bike for last 6 years. Speaking of upcoming competition, Looking at how the current Himalayan and other 350cc models are being priced, I don’t think Royal Enfield will be able to significantly undercut this KTM in price and I don’t think it will match the engine performance of the 390 because then it will be precariously close to the 650cc engines output and I wouldn’t do that if I were RE. I am just waiting for these bikes to launch and the fun to begin( with the comparos)!
